    Damn, he was so clearly manipulated. This makes me sad. I feel like he was gaslit and groomed from the time his mom died to believe in a certain kind of reality. I don't see anything wrong with him getting clemency tbh. I'm sure he has a much better grip on reality now and feels terrible about what happened. It wasn't just a matter of being an immigrant imo, but having a whole other narrative of reality spun by his sister that led up to these events.

    • @BizzieBrittany
      @BizzieBrittany  3 года назад +1

      Agreed! There were a lot of factors that went into the reasoning and actions for everyone, not just Andrew, so I completely agree with your comment here. The gaslighting was definitely key in Andrew's actions.

    Just finished class and watched. I feel so terrible for Andrew! So many things and factors around his conception and birth were so hurtful toward him. It’s so painful to see a sibling turn to jealousy , and it hurts the whole family.

    • @BizzieBrittany

      I completely agree there was this pressure placed on him since birth just because of the IDEA of him, which is so unfair. Cathy also got the very short end of the stick just for being female. It's all bad.

    Feel so sad for Andrew! I saw his docu one day , signed his petition which sky rocketed after vloggers share his story. Then nbc did A story on his sister and featured Andrew “called twisted loyalty” My heart totally breaks for him. He should of been given a reduction of his extremely excessive sentence. He has done almost 30 years already. He is not a threat to society and even with support from the prosecutor and no opposition from the victims brother and his very mitigating circumstances/damaging childhood… the system thinks it’s better to keep him locked up. 😭why do worst criminals get less time and already free? Even ex prisoners have commented on some of Andrews story on RUclips saying he doesn’t deserve to be locked up.

    I agree that this was completely wrong and he needed to serve time. At the same time, the culture that he was brought up in and the pressure of being the protector of the family is key in this case. I think that he should have a second chance and it sounds like he is completely remorseful. I also think that the sister should rot in jail!! Thank you for your diversity in sharing cases.

    The way you explained the culture, really did change my mind about this case. I really think he was manipulated and had his culture used against him by his sister and he should have a lesser sentence because of it. Yes he killed someone, but he was basically brainwashed and thought he was killing a man who murdered his mother, stole from him and beat his sister.

    I believe culture was the reason for the sister's behavior 100%. Blackmail over the mother's death would explain why she didn't remove Robert from her life and finances.
    Putting culture aside, any child who has lost both parents of which they were extremely close to, could be easily manipulated in this way.

    As an immigrant, I don’t know if it was so much cultural as it was being raised by his sister and her being the last family he had. And again, I’m not sure if my thinking is so much cultural as it is wanting to protect what is my own. As for Andrew, I think he should have been charged with 2nd degree murder just based on the fact that it was his older sister/guardian/parental figure who put him up to it.

    This is a hard one. In the letter of the law he should stay put. Personally, I think he should be freed after some exceedingly thorough forensic examining and testing and then really held to the letter on parole. But I think he also needs pretty intense counseling after because he will be doing his duty to carry on the family name and how is he going to do this with a prison record. I think that he needs to be very mentally prepared so he does no harm to himself. So his parole would need to be very restrictive at first until he has shown that he is not an imminent harm to himself.

    • @BizzieBrittany

      I couldn't agree more. I think the biggest part about deeming someone rehabilitated is doing the proper checks to ensure that that is actually true. I also think that it is making sure they received the care that they needed in order to be properly rehabilitated. Great points made!

    • @TangledYarnPrincess
      @TangledYarnPrincess 3 года назад +2

      @@BizzieBrittany thanks! True rehabilitation in this manner is the future of the prison system, I think. We have a gigantic state run program for rehabilitation that does not rehabilitate! I do believe that some people can't be rehabilitated, but I also think that some people get stuck in a prison state of mind almost as a cultural right of passage. It's not. People who have been immersed in a life where disregard for the law is the norm aren't going to deviate from that unless they are educated otherwise. Programs have to be of good quality to actually rehabilitate. It takes a lot of work. I think in 30 years it will look very different. And in 100 years I think it won't even be recognizable to us.

You do the crime you do the time but at the same time he got a cruel sentence for what the special circumstances he had.

    35:09 This has nothing to do with a cultural clash or culture in general. Andrew was manipulated by his sister to do his crime. You are assuming a lot here. There are many people who immigrate to the U.S. from different cultures and they do not commit murder.
    35:38 Family is important in Korean culture, but not to the point of violating any laws. Morality is very important in Korean culture and that is why it has such a low crime rate. Korea does have its own laws just like the U.S. It is really ignorant and offensive for you to blame culture based on this incident, which does not even support your comment. Andrew was law abiding until his sister manipulated him. He was already 19 years old, an adult when he committed murder. He was law abiding and had grown up in the United States for many years before this happened.

    Wow... Don't come for me but I do understand how the sister must have felt... she would never be able to please her father no matter what she did nor how hard she tried... Then her younger brother comes on the scene and Dad couldn't be happier...if that doesn't make you feel like a big old loser what will... I agree that she most likely killed her mother... All those stab wounds made it a crime of passion... I think her boyfriend was beating up on her and basically was controlling the money... So she needed him gone... She had no love for Andrew and it showed... If things had gone her way he would spend the rest of his life in jail and she would be free of the boyfriend and she would have all Andrew's money... Question... Why didn't she get any inheritance? Is that part of their culture too...
    Catherine was raised in the United States pretty much but she was expected to live the culture of her native land... Is that really fair? She was a cold hearted selfish person but what made her like that... Yes she deserves the sentence she received... I also believe Andrew deserves the sentence he got because he was accustomed to the rules of this country... He knew the consequences of his actions... My opinions just thinking things out a different way...

      Love your comment! I would never come for you for sharing your view on the case!!! These are the conversations that I wanted this video to drive.
      I definitely agree with you about Cathy. She was never given the tools or love needed in life to be a productive human being in any way. The hate that developed within her due to the lack of all of that really came through in every action and decision that she made in her life. She also didn't get the love that she was necessarily looking for in her relationships either. All of that fueled the results that we have here today and I feel for her in that way too.
      From my understanding, the son was the sole heir or the money because he was the son (culture) and because Cathy showed no interest in her family whatsoever. And I love your question on is it fair to ask the children of immigrants to live by the rules of their native lands when they were not raised there. I think that is a tough question to ask because (speaking from experience) it is very important to carry on the culture and customs from your native land as you grow and have your own families or it dies with you. BUT I think there is a difference in carrying on the customs and such and living/making life decisions as if the new culture you have been immersed into has no bearings on your life. I don't think it is fair to shun your children if they don't make every decision based on your culture because they should also be raised to understand the culture that they are living in and be taught to live a life blending both and making just decisions that way.
      I think in this case, it gets a bit difficult with the culture and customs that you are trying to carry on cross into the legal space of your adopted land. I also notice this a lot with other Asian cultures and the honor killing cases that take in the US and people wouldn't bat an eye anywhere else. It is not right or acceptable by our standards but it is elsewhere.

      @@BizzieBrittany thank you for taking the time to respond to my post... I completely understand and agree with what you're saying... It is important to keep cultural traditions alive but like you stated once the children are grown they should be able to freely make there own decisions without the fear of losing their family's love... I feel the same way about religious beliefs...
      Please keep these interesting cases coming...
