I was curious as to why Alfred Gwynn Vanderbilt wanted to stay at the Plaza, so I looked it up. His parents lived right across from the Plaza in the largest house ever built in New York. Even though his parents' home had 154 rooms, Alfred liked the idea that he could see his parents whenever he wanted, but he could also get away from them when he'd had enough of them.
My husband and I have a similar arrangement: love each other dearly but we're both fiercely independent and enjoy our alone time. We also keep wildly different schedules. I've got the big "together" apartment and he has a separate place nearby where his studio is. A twist is ours being an open marriage so it also keeps things from being awkward for our respective partners though everyone's on the same page about our situation.

As a Jaguar XJS specialist and growing up in NY and spending a lot of time in the hotel, I remember several years ago reading that the last guest was an XJS owner and the building had been sold and was being converted to condos. I dined there many times, used the business center and would use the phones around the back near the 57th St. entrance to make business calls making appointments back in the late seventies. Back when the phone booths in Manhattan where the best with a fan that would come on when you closed the door.

I like how they said the Edwardian room had a ‘panoramic view like no other’ which is true because no view is the same, but however there was a load of scaffolding to look at the time this was filmed. It’s like no other
Scaffolding is all over New York since a new law says any kind of work being done on upper floors must have this-- euphemism is 'sidewalk sheds'. Unfortunately they also discourage customers at many small stores.
I was an elementary student in the Bronx mid 1950's and I was fascinated with Eloise, and her voice and her story of living in the Plaza. 6 years later, 1960, I was honored to be an invited guest as a Senior Girl Scout at the formal International Air Cadets Ball, held in the Plaza ballroom. I was Cinderella in my elegant tea length Moss green silk organza gown, opera length white kid gloves. I danced the night away with my tall handsome Scottish Cadet. It was magic and I am grateful to have experienced those days
Wish I had watched this before my trip to NY back in Nov. I love knowing details of places I visit. Not that I went into the hotel but I was in Central Park and got to see the outside of most of these buildings
I thought Eloise at The Plaza was based on the childhood of Liza Minnelli. I read years ago that Judy Garland had a permanent suite at the Plaza & that little Liza spent a lot of time alone there with her handler, waiting for her mother to return. I would like to hear Liza’s account on this. On my bucket list to visit the Plaza one day but since I live in Australia, this may never happen.

Love Bergdorf Goodman's next door with it's beautiful view of gorgeous Central Park, thanks for sharing, much appreciated! Keep these coming, loved your great video on the public library as well, another place I used to go to when I lived in NYC many moons ago! Left my heart in beautiful Paris, Rome and NYC and also Boston , love beautiful cities and the first thing I do when I go to any city is study the architectural details!!! One of the first books I got my 3 daughters was the book "Eloise" and I call my cat "Weenie" sometimes like Eloise called her dog or was it her turtle? Love that classic children's book!
I was lucky enough to stay at that two story suite. I got drunk during super bowl and apparently booked a trip for the whole family. We had an amazing time. It’s definitely one of the most grand hotels I have stayed at. I loved the balcony in that two story suite and the office area. The food is also amazing there. The service is top notch. Too bad it’s closed right now. So sad.
I love the architecture and the story behind grand places like this.
The detail is exquisite
I love the history of The Plaza. The architecture and the detail of it is actually quite beautiful. While some do not like the way people in the lobby are dressed the hotel does not have a dress code.
Thanks for making these videos!
They truly reflect what’s AD is truly about.
Keep them coming
Didn't realize this channel was so big but I stumbled across it late in architectural channels out there. I know this may not be representative of all clips but beautiful, seamless camerawork here, along with informative side panels! Just love the narration and seamless transitions in everything! I've never visited NYC but this really does capture the charm and beauty of the Plaza Hotel well I feel. Subbed!
Watching this during quarantine is the best armchair travel EVER. I have bad anxiety and my panic attacks are back. Watching these videos make me feel better. Traveling somewhere that I may never get to go.
I’m here because it’s Christmas and HOME ALONE 2! But loving this educational vid! 👍🏻
Lived there from '66-73. A interesting place. Still is a place to visit when in NYC. Thank you
RUclips COMMENTATOR- Mr. Hahn so you’re rich RICH
Good times then,I was young though
yah. You could also sneak in and use the bathroom in the basement. Where do go to the bathroom in Midtown has long been an issue.
What a beautiful historical landmark of New York.
Alice Wong Howdy do. This is Peter McCallister, the father. I’d like a hotel room please, with an extra large bed, a TV, and one of those little refrigerators you have to open with a key. Credit card? You got it.
Harrison Edgar lol
Kevin!
Stayed there in 79 with hubby and his mom and his bros family. Our room had a fireplace. Heavenly time spent there and around the city that Christmas season. Loved every minute. Thot i had died and gone to heaven.
THIS is amazing!!! Best thing I ever watched!!!
The woman narrator sounds like Lindsay Lohan
mixed with Siri
Dude I literally came to the comments to see if anyone else would say this
Caligula Longhbottom wow 😯 your so right
Who is Lindsey Lohan?
Hahaha exactly, I was actually searching to see if it was her, but I couldn’t find anything hahaha
"What kind of idiots do you have working here?"
"The finest in New York!"
The Edwardian room! Now we're talking! It just has soul!
I love the Plaza , the beautiful beauty of Hotel building .
Imagine dressing up in 1940's fashion and going to the palm court for drinks! 😍
Even in the 80's if you walked into the Plaza without a coat and tie, you were stopped at the door and politely sent downstairs to Trader Vic's bar...in the basement...but it was nice.
@@normanduke8855 That was true even into the early 1990's.
ashely- its called "Period Clothes", and yes that would be fun, and so would sailing on the TITANIC, just before it hit the iceberg....straight ahead.😁😂🤣
Now, this Hotel is iconic and amazing! Vintage Beauty! 💕🎬💕
I love this! It’s so interesting to discover the history on this gorgeous and famous hotel!🌺
Wow! What a great treat to see The Plaza inside and out, complete with a guided tour! As we are on "Lockdown" in Jersey with the CVirus, I felt like I had a mini-trip to "The Big Apple" without violating travel restrictiona! The Visit made my day. Again, many thanks! Best wishes to all out there! Be safe! ❤❤❤
Oh My this was a really treat to visit on Christmas 2019!!
Thank You for a amazing video of this fabulous building, if those walls could talk, I'm confident they would thrill us with many a sorted stories 😋
I just want to say thank you so much for making this video! I learned so much. I have been looking for years for a good RUclips video of the Plaza Hotel and never could find one. But finally I have found this one and this one went beyond my expectations. Thank You!
I wish we could’ve seen the Eloise Suite.
Samantha Passlow www.theplazany.com/eloise/
OH YES!!!!!!
We loved the Plaza last year at Christmas. Excellent all around. The rooms are a little bit basic but the location is wonderful. Can be expensive for food and drinks....I'd go back for the history.
What a difference in the old photos and the style of dress , compared to how folks look in the lobby now!
I wish there were more "Every Detail" episodes, it's very interesting to watch, please bring it back!
this was really interesting thanks for doing your homework and presenting it in such a nostalgic but factual way
Thanks so much for the video. I grew up in NY and passed by and through this hotel daily back in the 70's and 80's (a tough time for the hotel) but I never had much time to look around and never had occasion to stay there. The history is fascinating.
Voiceover, the man sounds like Michael Kors , the woman Lindsay Lohan. Like this if you agree
蒋韵珊 wow. You’re totally right
Sounds like Lindsay before she went crazy
Take a tour of New York City's most famous and luxurious hotel The Plaza led by architectural historian and author Francis Morrone and journalist and author Julie Satow. It says this right under the video.
Yeah I totally thought that was Lindsay Lohan too. Sounds just like her.
Michael Kors is a sick pervert.

You know you're in America when the guests at one of the best hotels all look like they are going to a football game- logo tee shirts, cargo shorts, trainers. Some people have no sense of style.
Lol true ironically America is the fashion capital of the world.
Yes - let me dress myself in a suit in mid-August 80 degree weather.
True. I saw this even on Christmas eve in some of the classiest hotel in Vegas. Pissed me off!
OMG, first thing I thought too! Do these people have no sense of pride!
WMA literally 2/10 people dress like that so calm down you act like you’ve never seen a person before
Fascinating content. More of this please. Thank you to everyone involved in making this!
I’ve been there hundreds of times but never stayed as a guest. I’m a professional pastry chef, I just deliver (and set up) wedding cakes then leave. 🥺
Just Deliver and Set Up??? Nothing just or ordinary about that for without you there would be no grand events!!

Oh thank you, you’re just a sweetie-pie! I hope you enjoy a Happy, Healthy & Loving New Year. ☺️
@Jane Doe
Thank you and many blessings be upon you in this New Year..
How did those "stuck up", rich snubs, treat u?, any extremely large tips? make a lot of money yearly, working for the 1%'ers?🙄😶😑🤔🤨😣😫😒😤😬😬😖😲😨😱🥶😳😡🤬🥺🥺😈👿🤢🤮💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰💰
Who else is loving these video tours??!
Excellent! Very well done. Beautiful old work of art whose importance was added to by the many who lived or stayed there.
Their voices make the hotel sound better than I thought it was.
Pearl Blue
Their voices? Ok
@@jamesjfisk4968 Like how they described the architecture.
Stunning
Outstanding. Thank you very much for this present.
Absolutely stunning architecture!!
enjoyed it, but the camera was moving too quickly.
the lady sounds like lindsey lohan
Lauren Zama spot on!
I could’ve sworn it was Jenny Slate.
Or like Mila Kunis
S.G. kind of a sound!
Lauren Zama A sober, pre-drug use, thousands of cigs ago, Lindsay Lohan.
I couldn’t get past the architect the stories and of course the beauty and grace of this hotel, I will never get to see New York City or walk through the doors of this magnificent hotel so thank you for sharing❤️
Beautiful decor architecture. Love the narrators voices. Super soothing for me.
Besides The Great Gatsby, Home Alone and Eloise, the hotel is also featured in another work of fiction the Hitchcock classic North by Northwest. Great post. Do The Racquet and Tennis club, the private club on Fifth Avenue designed by Stanford White. The interiors are amazing.
I really appreciate these fantastic videos of these beautiful buildings! I hope there will be lots more in the future!
"The Plaza suite" movie, starring Walter Matthau,is what ill always assosciate with this Hotel!
It is such a GORGEOUS building. 😘😘😘
Thank you for giving me experience watching the interior and exterior plus the great surround area, cause im poor and never able to go to NYC & see this. Many Thanks and bucket list checked ✅️
Wow fantastic video watched every second
I like how they said the Edwardian room had a ‘panoramic view like no other’ which is true because no view is the same, but however there was a load of scaffolding to look at the time this was filmed.
It’s like no other
Scaffolding is all over New York since a new law says any kind of work being done on upper floors must have this-- euphemism is 'sidewalk sheds'. Unfortunately they also discourage customers at many small stores.
Larry Grimaldi ah right, it was just a bit ironic thats all
It would be nice if you could do 60 fps videos so we could appreciate more the details of the building when the camera is moving.
LOVED this!! Please can we have more similar videos please AD?
Wish I had watched this before my trip to NY back in Nov. I love knowing details of places I visit. Not that I went into the hotel but I was in Central Park and got to see the outside of most of these buildings
I ate a gorgeous lobster salad and admired the setting and people around me. Beautiful moment
this is more than perfect from edits to footage to shots to the stories to the mesmerizing crazy attracting architecture
What an unpleasant contrast when you are admiring such exquisite beauty and then shorts, jeans, T-shirts and sneakers cross your view. Ugh.
chironapolonio because people should dress to please you
Because people heading out to run in the park, run errands, do laundry, grab lunch and otherwise trudge about the city need to dress to the nines during midday....got it....glad I don't live in your world. I bet you also look down on those who don't dress up to go to the airport. :( :(
do u really expect people to dress proper to go to a hotel??? sweetie its 2020 not the 1920’s
Obviously there is no dress code.
