Like others have said, thank God you are young. That's a blessing that you were given 60 days advance notice. We are entering a phase where we have to build our own source of income and business. There is no safety with corps anymore. I was laid off in early 2023 from my main job and didn't have any back up. I thought I was going to struggle but found a way. You'll find yours.

60 days notice? You have a nice employer. Most of my layoffs have been zero notice. Out the door with a box in hand. You'll be fine. Start interviewing for new roles ASAP. Also get used to more layoffs. With AI and outsourcing, this is the new norm. And Welcome to the real world.

Yep, I was terminated 5pm on a Friday just before the weekend (no warnings whatsoever)..,weeks after a positive performance review…. Didn’t even get severance or my 4 weeks of saved PTO paid out….. just like that. I didn’t do anything wrong….one of the managers for some reason had it out for me.
That’s employment in America, employees have few rights. Can get fired for any and no reason at all. I should have at least gotten my paid PTO but legally employers don’t have to do that either. Then they tried to fight my unemployment….which I won.

I knew a guy who worked in IT was given his notice and told to leave instantly but he got 3 months notice fully paid. A disgruntled person in IT can seriously fuck around a company so it helps both parties if the person going goes instantly...it is however a psychological shock though if you've never experienced being laid off

@@charliedallachie3539 Here in Europe employees are more protected by law compared to the US I guess. In case of a layoff, an employer must pay several month of wages (based on the number of years with the company), to the employee. Immediate termination with no additional payment is only possible when the employee does something really stupid and harsh thing, like e.g. intentional damage to property or business.

    • @_Balanced_

@imieeh There are laws in the USA. Nobody follows them, and there are tons of loopholes. If you try to push back after the fact the system is so backed up by the time anyone could do anything at all you will have waisted half a year or a year to get no result.

I was laid off at the end of March and am now on my fourth week of a new job! I love it and it's a big pay increase as well. My former manager (who hired me and left the company before I was let go) gave me feedback on his resume, introduced me to his connections, and also did a mock interview with me. I think the mock interview really helped me get the job! I only got one interview from a referral, and it wasn't for the job I ended up getting.

I too got laid off luckily my company gave me 8 months severance package. It was an amazing job doing disbursement and procurement audits for clients. Made so much money for me to buy a few cars, a house and traveling. If only the owner didn’t sell the company to the competition and the Néw company laid everyone off due to everyone making too much money. So they brought in their own people and we had to train them so that we would get our severance package. I still think about the job glad I was part of it for 11 years .

It sounds like you are a math/science person but you also are very articulate, interesting and creative. I have seen many you tubes on people getting laid off and they are bitter and angry and not really that interesting. There was not a boring moment in your video and thank you for not including minutes and minutes of of things that don't matter and thanks for not dragging it out. I love how your story telling is honest and raw but yet the message is so inspiring and hopeful. It helps that you have so many supportive people but at the same time, I can see why so many people have your back. You are just that type of person that they want to cheer lead for. I bet your boss and your co-workers will really miss you on the job as well as your presence. It's good to know that there are kind and mentoring bosses that care about people and who can be the bigger person, even when they are laid off. I was laid off from my first job out of college which was about 40 years ago and it was so scary having to make rent, etc. But I was glad it happened when I was young because I always saved money and never took any job for granted. Looking back I wish I could've been less stressed out about the process!!! If you are a good person good companies will want to hire and work with you! That's basically it! I wish I had 60 days notice. I did see the writing on the wall a few months before it happened, so not a 100% surprise. I was thinking of selling my house (to downsize, being empty nesters) and so I pushed up the home fixes to sell it sooner rather than later. I just sold when I got laid off. That saved me, financially. I found work with a temp service, then used the profits from my home sale to purchase a much smaller house. Then after a year, I got a much better job. I consider myself very lucky at my age to find a good job.

Sorry to hear about the job situation! I can relate as I had a job that I loved and then was unexpectedly pushed into leaving. I left my job in 2023 with a severance package that has given me some time to think. Basically, I am still floundering though. The job market is tough. I have a master’s degree in Statistics but I am not optimistic about getting a job in data analysis. I like math and thought about teaching math in middle school or high school. The irony is we are all are told that we should strive to not be dependent but our societal structure makes us dependent, in a capitalistic society we have to rely on someone else whom has the power to give us the opportunities we desire and remember when one is given an opportunity the other has to lose, our current structure everyone cannot win there has to be losers which is very primitive. Hopefully one day humans will ascend to no longer be driven by accumulating (monopoly money) "wealth" and instead work to better ourselves and humanity as the driving force.

To minimize țhat type of impact on your financial, emotions, stress, i would try to save more of your income in the next job, invest in etf or stock that pay dividends. A small percentage can be used to invest in high growth volatile stocks. Invest with risk management in mind so that you won't have to worry about having income to live. They at least told you they were letting you go. I've been getting let go randomly, sometimes they don't even say anything, I'm just off the schedule one day without warning and that's it. I've had no warnings at any of these places. I dunno, my co-workers just get me fired by being massive sources of irritation until I snap, then I get in trouble, then it just goes downhill from there, every, single, time. You have to be able to work with actual morons without snapping. I don't know how I made it through school, I think the people I've worked with the past 3 years have been dumber and definitely more infirm than school kids. My best co workers have been high schoolers, girl or boy doesn't matter, they're the least irritating to work with and don't act like they're injured/sick/infirm/handicapped/tired 24/7.
