Jimmy may not be in any danger, but the way the car drives is *very* similar to the real thing, the oversteer, and the understeer in this car is so hard to manage and to get a good time in, plus the car demands *all* of your attention, but jimmy could commentate while driving this car, *and* get a good time in, and that is requires so much skill to accomplish.

@@theant9821 Toivonen, not Torvinen. Great driver regardless, he was a clear-cut favorite to win the championship that year. Also, he had a huge fever, and the overall rally was twice as long as the rally of Finland is today, yet the Lancia Martini team made him drive anyway, despite his teammate's death in the very same rally the prior year... and still, before he crashed, he was smashing the competition by *over a minute.*
And it was a technical failure that caused the crash. Just... so many ways that death could, and should have been avoided.

And he didn't have to drive but not doing so would void the contract he'd signed, and at the tim fatalities were not uncommon in rallying so the crash the year before wasn't even in the delta so most probably seen as unfortunate by the team. Not a reason to withdraw from the event.

@@theant9821 But then again, those cars had no power steering, 600 bhp to contain and all wheel drive, and when you have a fever, you get a lot of fatigue in your muscles a lot faster than when you're healthy... Henri's body temperature was over 40°C. That's enough to land most people in a hospital nowadays. And, again, the rally was also much longer than any WRC rally today, not to mention that it was all narrow, winding mountain roads with tight corners and sometimes not even a guard rail separating the roads from the ravines surrounding them. Stepping behind the wheel in those circumstances is straight up suicide. Would have taken a damn miracle to survive through that.

Last S4 had 650+ hp in race trim, in testing they reached 1.000 hp. So with slicks, right setup and perhaps higher turbo pressure they could go against F1 on slower tracks, where grip and acceleration counts. The S4 had titanium and ceramic in their engines, on par with an F1 engine at that time.

@@theant9821 As far as i know the 90s group A cars were faster around medium to tight corners and easier to handle, but the top group b cars were faster at 0-60 but mutch more risky to drive. I say "top" group b since there was lower class group b as well.

Funny enough: inorder to effectively turn the S1 around an corner u would need to brake with your left foot, to give the front wheels more weight and grip, then u flick around that steering wheel, while pushing and playing with the throttle (and brake) constantly to keep that Turbo charged up and to get those faster exits. Oh and dont forget that this was all made inorder to not have to down-shift during, before or after the turn.
Fun fact: Walter Röhrl needed 3 Audi S1s to master that technique.
Just watch the footwork of Röhrl

    • @Bastelopa_wie_mein_Channelname
      @Bastelopa_wie_mein_Channelname 5 лет назад

You describe the driving technique exactly. But on a race track you have no turbo lag. When steering into a curve at the exactly right moment, it is enough to get off the accelerator quickly so that no understeer occurs. As soon as the car yaws into the curve, full throttle. I learned both techniques with my first Quattro. At this time when Audi first brought the Quattro I had two Quattros with these mechanical differential locks. Hard to learn to accelerate instead of speeding out.

One of the original "heel and toe" cars. Lol.
It suffered from terrible turbo lag, like most early eighties turbo cars, so they would brake and clutch with the left foot so they could constantly keep the revs up in the turbo power band with the right foot.
It's still an impressive technique today but it was much more difficult back then with virtually zero driver aids like they have today.

The front lifts up due to suspension, aero and power. A rear wheel drive car can have its front lift up. A front wheel drive car can have its front lift up too.
Suspension is the biggest factor and a rally car is set up to take huge variances in road surfaces.

  •  3 года назад

Hi, young group B lover here. Just bumped into your videos Jimmy, and wow. I cant deice if Im watching you driving, our your heeltoe technique, so amazing.
Just gonna leave a few things I think are kinda ridiculous about this car.
Official highest BHP was 590 (Rally Finland, 1985). Stiq Blomqvist said, that S1 E2 produced short-term horspower arround 1000BHP at the test.
There are also rumours (dunno if its true) that in the car, there was a button that made turbo produce bigger PSI, so car was close to 1000HP.
The bodykit that E2 used was producing 500KG downforce (the fuck, in 80's?!)
Walter Rohrl said this "With this car, you have to think two corners ahead...finding the correct balance betweet a decent pace and outright speed was a big challenge." He gave the E2 its only WRC win at the 85 Sanremo Rally.
Reall horsepower of this car is rumored somewhere arround 600-700HP.
Michele Mouton stated, that quattro could spin wheels in every gear, crazy to imagine.
Pikes-peak version of quattro had 1000KGs, and 600hp officialy. But PP version had very larger supercharger (K28..) so insiders of that era claimed, that this car was close to thousand horsepower. Then, Walter himself said, that car had 750HP.
Before group B ban, there was already new evolution in works, it was basically mid engined audi sport quattro. You can find some black and white pictures in google by searching "audi sport quattro S2". Fun fact - this car, alongside sport quattro and S1 E2 was tested few kilometers away from me! :)
