Today we're checking out Nightwish's new single and video, Perfume of the Timeless. Let's bask in the epicness that is symphonic metal and enjoy the visuals that the band has deemed appropriate to go with it. Or not?

Thanks for your great reaction to this masterpiece. Here's some probability calculations:
Step 1. Probability of a boy meeting a girl to have a romantic relationship with: one in 20,000.
Step 2. Probability of that same boy knocking up that same girl: one in 2000.
Step 3. Probability of right sperm meeting right egg: one in 400 quadrillion.
Step 4. Now lets assume that you have just those 12 generations of ancestors mentioned in the intro to this song. For the probability of every one of those 12 generations of your ancestors having reproduced successfully with right sperm having met the right egg is (20k x 2k x 400 quadrillion) to the 12th power. Going backwards in time with even more generations of your ancestors, we soon reach a probability of 1 divided by the number of atoms in the entire universe. This makes each one of us a unique miracle.

Floor joined in October 2012, travelling from The Netherlands to the USA and learning the setlist in 48 hours before her first concert. This is the third album with Floor and the last part of the trilogy. And since Marko left, Troy the British multi instrumentalist has been singing more and sang the end section. I enjoyed your reaction! I think the metaphorical vignettes in the video will start to make more sense once a newcomer has had a little time to gather the right perspective on the song's meaning. One comment I can make that might be helpful toward that end is to say that the point is to encourage each of us, as individuals, to contemplate and appreciate the profundity of our ancestry more than we normally would.
For example, you made the very well-respected and poignant comment about the Jewish people, by and large, not knowing what happened more than three generations ago. Knowing your more distant ancestors is not a requirement to the point of the song. In fact, it is irrelevant: It encourages us to understand that we required all those enumerated ancestors regardless of whether we know them or not. We still needed 2 parents. And each parent needed 2 parents, and so on back to and through the vignettes of Darwinian evolution.
That unspeakably horrible tragedy that happened to the Jewish people back then should make the concept MORE relatable to you rather than less. Nightwish is reminding us that you exist here and now to listen to their song precisely BECAUSE you, individually, had an unbroken, yet fragile, chain of ancestors who managed to survive that unspeakably horrible tragedy in order to give you life. That's the most poignant reflection on Perfume of the Timeless that I can imagine. As the narrative says in the beginning, contemplate how many struggles, agonies, and hopes for the future those ancestors had to live through during that awful period of 20th Century history. "You are the dream of many ancestors." You ARE their dream and hope for the future. You exist. You successfully fulfilled their dream by being here to listen to Nightwish. It brings tears to MY eyes to just think about how it must make you feel, and it isn't even a part of my personal story. 😢 In fact it just did. I had to stop typing for a moment to dry a bleary eye that I might continue reading the screen. [Side note: I used the phrase "unspeakably horrible tragedy" rather than the real word that should be used because I don't know if the Orwellian algorithms that sniff our on-line speech here would flag that as a disallowed word or not. I do not trust them.]
Another note is to point out that all these ancestors are gone and forgotten. That's why the images keep turning into ghosts and skeletons. They live only as long-gone ghosts in our memories and imaginations. Yet, although imaginary effigies, they really DID exist. Otherwise we would not. Did you notice the little owl near the beginning with his head spinning like a motor? Notice it was spinning counter-clockwise (or anti-clockwise, not sure which term you use). This symbolizes that Nightwish is turning the clock back in time in your thinking. It speeds up to a breakneck rate to indicate that we need to extend that profound realization back not only to our unbroken chain of human ancestors but beyond to what happened before that.

@@easyfunkycrazy Tuomas is a storyteller extraordinaire. Sometimes it can take weeks or months to figure out what he's saying with his poetry! It took me a while to wrap my brain around "Perfume OTT." I was not drawn in immediately. My experience was opposite of yours though. I saw a fan-made copy of it first, and did not get it at all because they elected to tune down Floor's powerful voice in the mix so that she would sound more like a part of the background choir. So I could not discern any lyrics at all. It wasn't until several days later that I finally found this video, and the imagery actually helped me to start getting the drift. But it still took me a while after that! :)
The diving footage is of a famous free diver (someone who dives on one breath as deep as possible). Also, much of this is showing the concept of going back in time to remember that generations of people had to exist for you to exist (whether you remember who or not). Yes, there's a lot of CGI, but this is also video at a lower resolution for the actual footage of the free diver, because the footage did not exist in a higher resolution and the cost/time to upscale it would have been unrealistic and jarring compared to the rest.
The male singer is NW male singer Troy who also plays multiple instruments...

You may not know what happened, but you can be sure that you have ancestors going all the way back to the beginning. They had quite a lot to overcome for you to be here in this moment. The video represents the story. Going deep to explore and create the story of humanity. Think imagery and open you mind to a much deeper reality.

This song isn't about evolution per se. It's about generations of connections both in nature and in love that brings people to where they are and to the things that surround them. Regardless, you seem to be looking for too much in the video. It's there to support the song's message, not the other way around. Regardless, it's important to note that Darwin's understanding of evolution was minimal at best. Science at the time was unable to do the necessary testing to classify species. The classification of "fish" no longer applies since genetically most things we call fish are actually in no way related. A manatee is genetically more genetically related to an elephant than any other sea dwelling creature. A dolphin has a fin more like a human hand in bone structure, and it's brain looks exactly like a human brain - unlike any other mammal in the ocean. Several "bird" species are similarly categorized by Darwin, and only science of the last 60+ years has discovered how wrong classifications were. However, as generations progress we gain the ability to build on what we are. The video looks backward in time to see where we came from (for various species). It reminds us that species lived in the oceans until volcanic land masses cooled and species adapted and crawled onto land. Every generation, we come further. Every generation we push further. In the end, my opinion doesn't matter. Nightwish released the video to give press for the music on the album.
Israeli history even with an tragic event such as the holocaust still is in reference to the starting ancestor list. I'll just something more simpified to explain what i mean. An Holocaust Survivor is able to trace their family tree back 400 years for them individually (their offspring just adds to their family tree.) The Prehistoric Animals are gauged via natural history examples. Also described in essence by the skeletal remains in the natural history muesum. The free diver scenes are taken from the doc "A Single Breath" and are NOT AI. The rest of the video is Evolution Descriptions. (the only AI generated scenes/pictures are the owl spinning,the animal moving down cliff, Thomus going from co morgan man to modern man, and floor jumping/dropping from the tree branch between the pages ** its also rumored that the pictures of her face is infact her sisters face. And Thomus turning into an tree close to end ) The last image is when free driver intentionally dropped an camera through an shipwreck. the 12 conuts is mean as scaristic humor.
