  • In this new series, NFS or Not for Sale, John Reardon shares some very special Patek Philippe watches that make collectors' hearts skip a beat. Whether museum pieces, trophies from important collectors, or heirlooms that will never leave the original family, here's your chance to see watches that money can't buy. The series starts with one of the most important known sports related Patek Philippe watches in the world today: Joe Dimaggio's ref. 130 chronograph.

Never really thought Paul Newman's Paul Newman was horologically significant and if I had to choose a Rolex for this I'd much rather have Marlon Brando's GMT Master II from Apocalypse Now. As far as Newman is concerned, I think I prefer the Patek and DiMaggio. But to be honest, as I am from Louisville I would much rather have Muhammed Ali's Cartier Tank. He was after all, the greatest. Awesome Patek, thanks for sharing.

Yet another very interesting item from John. What would the retail price have been when Joe purchased that stunning watch? You did mention the original receipt was retained.

Thanks for watching! Originally, a ref. 130 in yellow gold had a retail price of $600 USD circa 1950.

Great content, thanks John. This is a beautiful reference, and awesome provenance and story telling. No doubt it has been undervalued compared to some crazy figures out there #5711craziness

Easy question to answer: Did this Patek become known as simply DiMaggio Chronograph? No? Was this watch gifted to Joe by Merlyn Monroe and engraved on the back? Well then, the number one spot goes to Paul Newman Daytona.

For me, also an easy question to answer! But history will ultimately settle this great debate of which watch and provenance is more notable, exciting, interesting, etc. I'll get back to you in the year 2050.
