It was a DPS DD vs DPS DD fight. So it was even in class and purpose. He had just a tier10 vs tier 7 fight (in a game with 10 tiers in total). Its like i would say "Oh, i won a fight with a tank from ww2 vs a tank (of the same class) form ww1. I'm so good." And ofcourse is a torpedo DD a more little threat for a DPS DD becasue its purpose is completly different.
The main advantage the Gearing has over the Fletcher is the fact that 66% of the guns are at the front end of the ship. The Fletcher has 40% in the front, 40% at the back and 20% at the side. In addition, it also has two barrels more of Bofors 40mm AA. In my opinion, the 40mm AA guns are the only guns of any consequence on the USN Destroyer lineup. The 127MM guns fire too far and reveal your position, and the 20mm guns fire way to short and only serve to deal with dive bombers, a situation which should be avoided at all cost. The 40mm guns on the other hand, doesn't reveal you as you are already revealed if enemy airplanes are within range. I wish Wargaming would allow us to disable the anti air capabilities to certain ranges, preferably set it to disabled if you are hidden, assuming you have the perk that shows when you are hidden.
I found on the public test where the stats updated when you apply the upgrades. when you have all the stealth upgrades. Paint/ t5 capt ability/ ship upgrade the Gearing has a 5.9km detect range. that is crazy and I absolutely love the Gearing
Iowa's superstructure is currently bugged, that is why you couldn't do HE damage. It takes 5700 HE damage and then stops taking any damage from HE unless you light it on fire.

It wasn't, it was probably a DD just outside his detectability range. When 6th sense(or whatever they want to call it.lol) goes off there's a wee plane next to the "!" if your spotted from the air.

Just for your Info: Fireing HE Shells at a Section that is blacked out has the potential to do NO Damage at all. Take a look at the Damage Mechanics posted by amade in the US Boards.
I've been on a gearing class destroyer before. the uss joseph p. kennedy jr. it was a lot bigger than I expected. almost as much as a maze as the south dakota class uss massachusetts bb-63 was. and the guns on the destroyer were suprisingly big. but the massachusett's were MASSIVE.
Someone help me please! I see some people on RUclips have a timer ⏱ of how much it takes to the guns turn to the angle you want, how do I enable that timer to help me of knowing how much it takes to turn my guns where I want them to turn? Please help
Yanno the gearing has ALMOST as much total RoF as the Atlanta, right? That is yet another reason I picked the Atago over the Atlanta, besides the many others I will not list here. Point being; With the right upgrade modules alone, you can shoot WITHOUT BEING SPOTTED! And even if you do get spotted, you are in a tiny DD that is very fast and maneuverable - while being completely capable of keeping all of its guns on target whilst doing crazy maneuvers! The Gearing has a total of 120 Rounds/min! The Atlanta? It has 168 total rounds/min! And the Atlanta is WELL over twice as easy to hit in ALL ways - NTM it takes a LOT of HE damage - and loses its guns like crazy! Perhaps the MAIN thing that made me pick the Atago over the Atlanta was that the Atago could start firing over 4km sooner, and its HE not only did a TON of damage per shell to me (in the Atlanta at the time) - but it seemed that every other salvo I lost another gun turret! Yes the Gearing can lose turrets exactly the same - BUT the Gearing is INFINITELY harder to hit than the Atlanta! Then I played the Atago, and ran into an Atlanta, while I was out of his range (and because he was angling well) I started out with about 4 salvos of HE, which REALLY surprised me when I saw just 3 hits do 5k damage and kill 2 turrets (4 guns) - on my first salvo! By the time I got into his firing range, he had used the repair party, was burning two times over, and I switched to AP. Well, he starts hosing me, full broadside as I had knocked out about half of his guns, My first AP salvo doesn't citadel him, but deals 8k damage in 6 hits. Next one? 2 citadels and DEAD! And all the while, he took off only about 7k HP from me!

With Gremyashchy my match record is 85000 damage (+17000 fire) that way.

when you pop the speed boost you increase your spotting distance.
You should use your guns more often as an American DD (esp. when there are landscape cover around) :) you won't regret it :)
