Great to hear one of my favorite singers in this Mozart gem. His amazingly varied repertoire was always presented with notable interpretive insight & a consistently beautiful timbre. Early on he even sang, in German, the role of Zaccaria in NABUCCO which I found totally by accident & purchased immediately. He does well enough by it, however, it is more of a curiosity than anything. Better to remember his Mozart, Bach, & Barak in DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN where his gifts were best displayed. He also sang a surprisingly powerful Pizarro in FIDELIO & was one of the few who sounded fully warmed up when he began that difficult entrance aria. Also BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE with Christa Ludwig is likely the best recording to be sung in the original Hungarian by non native speakers. I guess a heart attack was the cause of his sudden death.

Very probably Ludwig Streicher. I had this on LP a long time ago. Don't know if Walter Berry recorded the piece with several bass players, but he did record it with Streicher for sure.
