Love Waynoka, my dad was born and raised there, my grandpa work as dishwasher at the Harvey House when he was young. Then owned a Texaco gas station and finally was a mechanic for the Santa Fe railroad.

WAYNOKA WAS AT ONE TIME A SANTA FE SHOP TOWN AND A CREW CHANGE POINT
    BACK IN THE 1990s
TRAIN CREWS TRIP LENGTHS WERE INCREASED FROM 100 MILES TO 200 MILES,
SO CREW CHANGE POINTS WERE CUT BY HALF!
ANOTHER RAILROADING THING WAS ORIGINALLY THE TRACK CREWS WERE ORIGINALLY 6 MILES APART, WHICH WERE THE BEGINNINGS OF MANY SMALLER TOWNS!
IN THESE SMALL TOWNS THE TRACK WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES LIVED IN COMPANY SUPPLIED HOUSING.
AS TRACK MATERIALS IMPROVED AND HAND WORK WAS SUPPLANTED BY MACHINERY CREATED THE ENDING OF THE 6 MILE MAINTENANCE DISTRICTS, ALONG WITH MANY TINY TOWNS!
A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS IS AT CLARE KS
BETWEEN GARDNER KS AND OLATHE KS!
    .

We have Nebraskans that head down for a go at it once or twice a year.many years the Platte River gets low enough that they run up and down it's channel. It is a sand bottom river, so gives similar effect, just no dunes.
The town was a very interesting looking places. Definitely much history. And it looks like many of the downtown buildings have been kept updated. It was great to see it.
As always, a very good video of our wonderful towns where so much of our country's history and lifeblood was in the past, and shouldn't be forgotten. With just a little twist thrown in for good measure!

At one time Waynoka had one of the largest ice plants in the United States. They made blocks of ice to ice down the refrigerated box cars. During WW2 German POWS were brought in from the POW camp in Alva to work at the ice plant. Another thing Waynoka use to be famous for was the annual rattlesnake hunt. First weekend after Easter, people would go out and catch diamond backs and sell them at the carnival.
