Does the one with the most dedication and drive, who trains smartest and hardest win? Does the one with the best genetics for a particular sport win? I think it's fair to say, that training and dieting can not make up for less than optimal genetics. As Freud put it, "anatomy is destiny". I think it's fair to say also, that you can't get away with training and dieting, no matter how perfect your genetics. How hard and consistent must you train, then? I think it's fair to say you can get away with training and dieting less hard, if you got good genetics. I don't think anyone can say Tom Platz didn't train hard, yet he never won. He simply did not have a good enough back. Then there are dudes with great genetics, but lack the motivation and drive. You have to want it...badly!
Even in MMA there seems to be an ideal body type....something like Jon Jones and Connor McGregor. Long limbs seems to be all the rave these days, as it gives you the reach advantage. But, MMA is very versatile, so you can (to and extent) make up for less than ideal genetics by developing your own unique fighting style that is very well suited for you and by being tough as nails.
