    Would love to see a video of y’all discussing the places you wish you had 6 weeks and the places you thought 2 weeks were more than enough. The +1 month places and the -1 month places. You guys are reasonable and delicate enough to make the video without offending a people group or culture. It is y’all’s opinion after all.
    You guys have inspired my wife and I to start slow travel/flexpat/slomad whatever you want to call it.

    We are slow travelers. We have been in Prague for a month, however, we have taken 5 daytrips (usually 1.5 hrs away by train or bus). These daytrips were incredible. So folks don't forget the daytrips.

      Great video. As slow travelers, we couldn't agree more, especially with the three week cut off to a bit of boredom. However, when we match locations to our big picture interests and pleasure (I'm a rockhound, husband is a plein air artist. Both hikers, bicyclers, tennis players) we're able to stave off the boredom. Thanks for all your ongoing insight! Always love it.

    Slow Travel is definitely my choice. I want to unpack, settle in, absorb the culture, get a feel for the place and experience day to day life. Fast travel is what I did on vacations while I was working full time, trying to jam in as much as I could into those 10 days or 2 weeks. And like you, so many times I found myself not remembering places or experiences because I was trying to do too much.. My travel now is not about "collecting" cities or stamps in a passport... it's about slowing down and truly being present to experience and appreciate where I am at any given time. Good luck and happy travels!! Thanks for the videos!

    Good video. We are slow retired travelers also. At least one month in each Airbnb. Need a combination of routine real life along with the sightseeing.
    We were just taking about our two recent months in Split: Get up early, walk around Marjan Park, take an early morning swim in the Adriatic, have a morning coffee and pastry while sitting on a bench on the Riva, walk to the bakery and market, take a nap, read a book, or watch a movie. Do the same the next day or take a day trip or longer walk around town a couple days a week. Find an occasional local concert or play. Take a local exercise or art class. Basically build a routine and live a normal life.
    That’s our approach to travel.
    We enjoy your discussion videos the best and you are naturals at the format.

    You guys are definitely a part of my Saturday routine that I look forward to, and your slow style of travel is part of it (as are, of course, Brian's hilariousness, and Carrie's reaction to it, subtly shaking her head and silently mouthing "no, he didn't"). I really appreciate the closer look into what it might be like to actually live in the places you've gone and the comparisons to different areas of the world (Europe vs. SE Asia). My own travel has always been fast travel other than the really, really slow travel I did as kid, living in Greece and Germany.

    I first found your channel when you were in Spain, as I was researching Spain as an expat destination. I'm a dual U.S. and Italian citizen, and plan to settle down in the E.U., but still be able to travel from that home base. When I do travel these days, I like to be a "temporary local" with the same coffee shop, bar, restaurants etc. I like to get the feel for what it would be like to live here. I'm definitely the slow-travel type, and not full time. I always want to have a place to call home. Thanks for all you do, I enjoy my saturday mornings with you!

    You two are hilarious and I love how you tell it like it is, dirty clothes and all. Travelling is amazing, but it can be work! As you said, the amount of researching, planning, reserving, etc takes time if you want to maximize your experience, especially for fast travel. I'm with you guys, slow travel is the way to go, with the occasional fast travel mixed in. Keep the great videos coming, it's part of my Saturday morning routine (routines are ok!).

    Hello, and glad you're slowing down.
    We are in our 50's, retiring in a year and plan on slow budget travel abroad as well. We were looking at your original videos and if I may say, even though the production value now is better, we enjoyed the early videos better, when it was more about you two living, groceries, etc. Sightseeing was a major part, but not 100%. Now that you're slow traveling again, maybe you can do some of those market prices, how to get around, currency exchange, and other daily life tips. Especially on a budget, which we will be as well, we would enjoy that information more than the sights alone, as those intangibles are what will help people like us decide if the location is for us or not. BTW. If ever were in the same place we'd like to treat you two to dinner as a thanks for great videos. ❤ R&A

    My first trip to Europe in 2003, I took the midnight train from Amsterdam to Zurich. From Zurich, I took a midnight train to Venice. This saved me 2 nights of expensive lodging. My morning to midnight day in Switzerland I caught a train to Geneva, walked around there for a few hours, and then caught a train up to Mount Titlis, the highest point in Europe. They were skiing ⛷️ that mountain in a driving snowfall in mid-May. I had an unfiltered beer 🍻 at the highest bar in Europe. And then I returned to catch the midnight train 🚊 to Venice. Even though it’s been 21 years, the day I spent in the Swiss Alps was very memorable ❤

    Hi Carrie and Brian. My husband and I are currently vacationing in Paris and the Loire valley for two weeks and we have stayed in 6 places. This limited sampling of fast travel has led me to believe that you are completely right. Fast travel is hard! Fast travel is challenging for many reasons, but the central reason involves lack of routine and loss of healthy eating habits. I hope to slow travel the next time we vacation.

    • @WorldFamilyExplorers
      @WorldFamilyExplorers 10 месяцев назад +3

      We full time travel with our kids and I totally agree! It's really hard to get into a routine during faster stretches. The constant research of new places, packing/unpacking, getting your bearings and then leaving is tough. We much prefer the slow pace! Hope you enjoy Paris! One of my favorite places

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  10 месяцев назад +2

      The loss of healthy eating is something that we really struggle with. We need a kitchen and a nearby grocery store. Slow traveling and the routine that comes with it is what keeps us sane. Mental and physical health are the most important things we have, and we plan on keeping them!! ❤

    We retired (early) in March and spent two months in Europe - one in the Algarve (thanks for your videos) and one in Puglia. We have fast traveled many times, packing as much as possible into two or three weeks. I 100% agree with everything you said in this video and we found that slow travel is for us. One thing that helped us from getting bored was that we had family and friend visits sprinkled throughout our time. This gave us a good balance of time alone and allowed us to look forward to and plan for visitors, during which we were more busy and on the go. Your videos helped spark this type of travel in us and we are busy planning our next two month itinerary. Cheers 😃

    You’re right on! We’ve experienced all those things you mention! Slow travel requires a different mindset; it’s a lifestyle, not “on vacation.” (At home, we’re not going, going every day.) We do burn out as well. We get tired of the decisions too. The planning, researching and booking takes endless amounts of time and then blogging as I do, or vlogging as you do - is work. But, the missing seeing things you want to see is VERY REAL. Slow travel is the way to go, except for a short period once in a while through expensive locations or high season. After two weeks in one place, is when I finally am able to unwind enough to read a book or two.
    Pretty soon, you’ll be thinking, I just want 2-3 months in one country!
    We just finished up 11 nights fast traveling through Egypt and every move gets so expensive: get to the station, the transportation, get to the accommodation, gratuities, etc. When we move every few days we can’t remember our hotel room number! 303? No that was the last hotel!
    I look forward to your Italy videos.
    We’ll be in Bologna pretty soon. Ciao!

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  9 месяцев назад +2

      This made me chuckle as we could 100% relate. We moved so quick that stretch that it seemed every stop we were questioning which room number we were in. I made sure to carry the paper sleeve they give you the key card in as the number written on it. Otherwise we would have been at the front desk having to ask 😂😂. Slow travel is the way to go for us and your totally on point that it's a lifestyle. Cheers 🍻

    Great video with a thorough analysis of the different styles of traveling. The extra planning required, the frequent packing and unpacking, and the potential for burnout are the main negatives that make me prefer traveling slower. Having the opportunity to experience and live in the location, meet people, feel comfortable in the neighborhood, have it start to feel like home, rather than only having time to quickly see the main sights and move on, is a much better method of travel for me. But to each their own. I think each person/couple needs to figure out what works best for them. You just have to get out there and try things out and learn by trial and error what you like best. Thanks for all of your great videos! Love following your adventures!

    My husband and I spent nearly the whole summer (46 days) in northern Italy, on average 4-5 nights per stay. We’d consider it on the faster side, but we wanted to scope out as much territory as possible in the time we had (and we had a car rental). It didn’t feel super fast, as our typical stay in the past has been 2-3 nights, but it was tiring. Not enough naps I think. We spent an average of $105 per night (mostly AirB&Bs), and really learned first hand a lot of the lessons you mentioned. We were scoping out places we may want to retire to in a few years. Great advice and as always, great video! I’d love to see a video about how you plan your itineraries-do you plan around seasons or cost of travel at the time? Do you carry clothes for all seasons (lug-sole snow boots?) or buy as needed? We’ve watched most of your videos and you’ve added Southeast Asia to our forecast, but we don’t recall seeing a real break down of your planning methods. Thanks!

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  10 месяцев назад +2

      The fact that we only have carry-on bags, we only have summer clothes with a sweatshirt and light jacket. We hope to get home in time for the cold weather where our winter clothes are stored away. We have had to buy jackets in the past but hoping that we don't have to do much of that. Eventually, we will be going to cooler climates so we will either need to check a bag or get creative on what we bring. Great idea on Itinerary planning. Wet will add that to our video list! Thank you so much!! ❤

    Loved this video! I have basically experienced just about everything you discussed in this video, and I agree that fast travel can be really fun for short bursts, but slow travel is much better for ones overall mental and physical health. I absolutely love taking time to get to know a town or a city. It’s so fun to discover your favorite grocery store, pub, ice cream shop, bakery, coffee shop etc. Haha can you tell I love food? Also, I love discovering parks, trails, cute neighborhoods, live music, all the things that come with getting to know an area during an extended time period. And on days when you feel exhausted and worn down, you don’t feel guilty about not going anywhere, because you’ve got plenty of time to explore everything you want to experience.

      We agree with your comment 100%, Debbie. We have said many times that we are so happy that we found this grocery store, pub, ice cream shop, etc... early on in our month-long stay. Places that we never would have found or had the time to enjoy if we were moving quickly. Thank you for watching and commenting!! ❤

    A nice video. I am a retired dual citizen, American/ Italian. I admire what you do. I’ve only been traveling in Europe for the last 5 years. I live on passive income. Half of it is Social security. I’m fortunate. However, I have no pension. I also have no bills. I live comfortably for less than $1500 a month. I base myself in Sicily, and then just travel to another country for at least a month. I do this about 3 months a year. Then I explore Sicily, Italy……and just a lot of nothing, the rest of the year. Keep up the traveling. Life is good!

    Hey guys. More quality content. I relish the idea of slow travel. I had it when I had a long term (3 month) and work assignment in Germany but generally I have limited time and need to see many sites over a few days like Portugal in May. I look forward to retirement travel and being longer in places. I think you get more of the flavour and vibe of a place with a longer stay. Thus I want to return to Portugal. But a thorough review of the Pros and Cons. I remember your rainy videos which just couldn’t be avoided. You two have such positive attitude and energy between you. It is good to get the insight into how you interact on a daily basis. The hotel bathroom story was very funny snd relatable. Continued safe and happy travels.

    Loved this video! We are a (mostly) retired couple who loves the "slow" travel style, but too often is doing "fast" travel to meet up with friends and family in various places. We just finished a 3-month trip in Europe which included 36 different accommodations (though the nights along the Tour de Mont Blanc necessitated 1 night stays). Really enjoyed the way you describe the pros and cons. We relate to not knowing which city we were in and running into walls in the middle of the night!

I have visited Budapest, Vienna and Prague on day trips in mid August so I can definitely relate to you when you mentioned it.. besides where to store the luggage before check-in, no laundry done after running around at 35-40 degrees (Celsius), no food available in the fridge at 10 pm because you have to leave the hotel next day, pack and unpack quickly etc, we also had 2 kids so a bit more stress that we obviously don’t see in the pictures 2 years later.. love you guys so keep doing what you do at the pace you feel and afford 😊🤗

    I really enjoyed this video. We have been pretty much slow traveling for 3 months now. Even though we had an itinerary in place before we left, to carry us through January 2024, we’ve made several adjustments already. We planned to stay in each location for a month but during August, some things just didn’t work out for various reasons. We ended up moving 3 times in that one month. It was difficult to pack and unpack that many times in a month but we did enjoy getting to see a couple of places that weren’t planned for.
    We definitely prefer slow travel for the same reasons y’all do, plus one additional reason for us. We love seeing the sights, but one of our main goals in traveling the world, is to figure out where we want to retire. When we stay for a month it gives us a better idea of what we could expect living in that area. We also enjoy having down days occasionally. We just had one today so I could work on our newest video. Having down days make it feel like you’re living, rather than just vacationing or sightseeing.
    I look forward to all of your videos! I agree with all your points on this one. 😉. Safe travels.

    Hey you two! Great video on the pros and cons of different styles of travel. There are other RUclipsrs who slow and or fast travel that I watch and only one makes good sense to me, and that is slow travel. I can understand how in some circumstances trying to see as much as possible in a shorter time frame makes sense, but to me that would feel like a vacation. Where slow travel would feel like a life well spent living. Besides, I hate being rushed or feeling like I'm under the gun. Taking the time to stop and smell the roses is much more my lifestyle. Now there are days where I just want to go, go, go, but that probably depends on how much caffeine I've had.
    Taking day trips or spending a night elsewhere makes sense while slow traveling. You always have a home base to return to, so you can essentially kill two birds with one stone. If the opportunity of experiencing a much desired location or area presents itself, then go for it. I think it will be enjoyed even more knowing you don't have to make plans to be somewhere else after the fact, knowing you are already settled somewhere else and can comfortably return to that.
    Your video made me think of a dog lying on it's back with it's stomach very much exposed. Thank you for being vulnerable as you shared certain things that took place as you fast traveled. That's life and I'm sure many have done the same and can relate. What am I talking about? Specifically, wearing clothing multiple times before washing them. It happens, even when you're not traveling! Thank you for sharing!

    Thanks for spelling out the candid truths. Slower travel sounds like really being in present time, getting to know the locals and bistros, cafes, grocery stores, coffee all mornin in your Airbnb…and way more affordable. Up my alley as I just retired. I am contemplating how I will feel giving up my apt and car in CA and stuff before long term travel. For sure, the states is too expensive to retire. This video is great to know the reality and when you give up your home in the states, it does sound nice to have a frig, and snacks, Brian, plus laundry washer, Carrie, at least for a little while to call home. A little routine, Nappin and reading a book is a big relaxing thing to do for me instead of having all that stress in planning a trip every 2 days. Carrie, wakin up to go to the bathroom in a new place in the middle of the night in a dark room and trippin has happened to me thus I always have my arms extended since then in the dark… kinda funny. I used to wash my underwear the night before and dry them over the shower curtain and using the blow dryer too Ugh!….when I travelled fast decades ago….lol.
    Q’s: Do you think you will keep traveling for another year? Are you missing not having a real place to call home? Are you contemplating making a decision in dropping your anchor, say in Portugal and live for a long time and applying for a long term visa? How would you apply for a long term visa after you complete a year or 2 traveling after you give up your home in the states. I read in the San Francisco Spanish and Portugal Consulate webpage you have to apply in your home country for a long term visa and have a place leased when submitting your application. But how can you do that if you are traveling like you on the road if you decide to live in say, Spain or Portugal. I read that before you do the long term visa you have to apply at your local consulate; in my case it would be San Francisco, but I wonder how would I do that if I wanna follow in your footsteps and live out of my luggage and do slow traveling in Europe?Would you use then your address with your family because you give up your address or your home in the states, do you then have to return to the US in order to apply for a long-term visa in the country of choice that you plan on living full time. ….because I thought you can’t do it from Europe, you have to apply to a consulate to get your long-term visa whether it’s a non-lucrative visa or a working visa like that you have an opportunity if you settle in one country to become a resident and have dual citizenship, and eventually have their healthcare. I welcome your thoughts. Thank you!

    • @BrianandCarrie
      @BrianandCarrie  9 месяцев назад +2

      Yes, slow travel for the win for SO many reasons 😁. We don't have a end date in sight for ending travel or settling down. We do love Portugal and can see staying there extended periods and extending our visa if we need to for that country. As for applying for permanent residency, this is something we had just began the process of prior to deciding to travel full time. You do need to apply at your local consulate, which was San Francisco for us as well. You would use whatever your mailing address is in the states after you begin travel. As far as the ins and outs of the entire process I unfortunately don't know as we have walked through it yet. Best of luck in your planning process. It's a lot to think through and prepare for. Getting rid of personal possessions including cars and apartments was something we never regretted. It's very freeing to not have anything holdings you down and knowing possessions can always be replaced. Cheers 🍻

    Hello Carrie & Brian, I hope you still remember me, it's the Californian from Lagos! ;-) Since you've asked for feedback; I have Zero regards for Fast travel, because by its very essence, it's an Empty Shell and that even reflects in all fast travel videos out there on this medium or elsewhere. I see Fast Travel purely as a phenomenon created by American culture, perhaps, for bragging rights, otherwise, a waste of time and money! What fills that Empty Shell are the local cultures, language, and the people that make a place, The Place! Clearly, this will be a miss under Fast Travel. As few others noted in comment section here, through your content many of us are trying to decipher what it will be like to live in these places on a daily basis, which clearly is a missing component of your Fast travel videos. We have been following you two for the past 18+ months and there's clearly a content richness difference between the two approaches. As much as we adore your simplicity and raw humor, my wife and I pretty much stopped following your videos after Romania, because when it comes to fast travel, most of the high level information can be obtained through an online research. All I can say is that I am very happy to hear that you two have decided to switch back to Slow Travel. 🙂

Our "destination" videos will change to include more of what you may expect if you were to live in the area, transportation, grocery store, cost, etc...but also information on things to do and see. Moving forward we plan to do more of the conversation style videos as well. We very much appreciate the feedback and the support. 😀

    Great video! Hubby and I have always fast travelled due to limited time off work, so therefore we would try and pack in as much as we could to get the most out of our trip. But after following you guys for a while now, I really like the idea of slow travel. Fortunately we are now able to do this with our work structure. So can't wait, we are heading to Chiang Mai for a month next year, I know I will love it, but it will be interesting to see how hubby goes, as he is always on the move (ants in his pants) !!😅

    I’m in Romania now, Constanta to be exact, and have been traveling for 3 years now. Retired at 45 and solo traveling, but I still get bored with being away for too long in diff hotels and short-term accommodations. I still maintain my home in the U.S. and the more travel I do, the more I find it necessary to not completely sell everything and become Airbnb-dependent. I love having a home to come back to relax and recharge before getting on the road again. Maybe one day I’ll sell everything and do what you guys are doing, but I’m not ready to take that leap yet! Full time travel is exhausting.

      @BrianandCarrie  10 месяцев назад +1

      Full-time travel can be exhausting for sure, but we wouldn't have it any other way. Selling everything and being completely debt-free without the responsibility of owning a home is part of what makes us feel the freedom that we now enjoy. With that being said when we do go home to visit friends and family, not having our own place can be a bit inconvenient. We do have two house sits when we return for the holidays this year so that will help. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

    This is a great video! I'm a few years from retirement and want to travel more. I've traveled a lot, but mostly moderate travel (One or two locations in 2 weeks). I feel slow travel sounds like fun, and definitely cheaper but like you said you may have too much downtime (but less frantic). But fast travel would be more expensive and hectic which is not exactly what I'm looking for. So after watching this video I think I will start with something halfway between but with unlimited time I can do maybe 2 weeks per location and string a bunch end to end. Thanks for the amazing content!

    Great video thank you. My partner and I (Australians) will be travelling full time predominantly throughout SE Asia and will be staying one to 2 weeks at each location. We will be travelling to countries and staying for as long as the tourist Visas are for, eg, Vietnam (90 days), Malaysia (90days), Thailand, Laos Cambodia and Indonesia (all 30 days) and re-visit places as we go. Given the close proximity that all these countries are in we can bounce back in to the countries with the short visa stays as we see fit. After about 12 months or so we will probably have found our preferred location where we may settle down longer term. Thank you for all your tips, we are definitely slow travellers, cheers.

    Loved this video! Rather than the videos that show an area, with not so much talking, I prefer the videos in which you guys are talking about everything, major and minor, related to the area, be it voice-overs or talking heads. I think you excel at that. You mentioned about slow travel the pro of getting to know the locals. An idea: add a segment to your videos in which you interact with a local. Maybe have a standard question like What do tourists always miss when they visit?, What do you hope would be a tourist's lasting impression of your city and its people?, If a foreigner could try only one food here what should it be?. It may be a little out of your comfort zone but I think it would be popular.

      That's not a bad idea, George. We would feel comfortable doing that if we became friends with a local naturally rather than just walking up to someone on the street. I completely agree. I much prefer slow travel. When I think of the times that I've done fast travel, it's been because of a time constraint. However, to me, one of the more esoteric benefits of fast(er) travel is that the faster I travel the slower time moves. When I slow-travel, I tend to get into a routine, which means that time seems to speed up and suddenly several days have gone by.

    After 3 years, we are settling into our groove. As a rule we are slow travellers, with some lightning rounds to be the exceptions to prove the rule. In 3 years of full-time travel we have stayed in 2 places for 3 months, 2 places for 2 months and 12 places for 3-6 weeks each. We also spend 50-60 days a year on cruises as it is our preferred way to cross oceans. Lightning rounds have been up and down the East Coast to see all those family and friends we hadn’t seen since COVID. 17 beds over 30 days to visit 29 people-whew!
    Our plan for next year (Australia and New Zealand and a world cruise) is back to slower travel including 206 days on cruises.

    Great down-to-earth and realistic discussion!
    Fast travel and slow travel both have their advantages and disadvantages. In my overseas situations since the 70s, what I did, as far as while in Europe, was to settle into my regular overseas city for 10-11 weeks and then would take little trips around Europe from there using my train pass. I'd pay my low rent for the entire 10-11 weeks and then if I wanted to take off, I'd go somewhere else in Europe for a while and then go back to my main city and get back into regular overseas life.
    For the first decade of 10-11- week travel, I rented a place in the same co-op style building annually and made friends with folks in the building. It was like going to a second home each year. I would even leave my bicycle in the same city either at my building or with friends that I had made who lived somewhere else in the same city. I still have a lot of those friends from back in the 70s (and their kids and grandkids) as we e-mail each other, some almost daily, and we still visited each other up until the pandemic started. I was last in Europe in summer 2019 and in Asia from part of 2019 up to and into Feb 2020.
    By staying in one place for so long, it was a way to create an overseas community. Plus, the overseas friends had friends in other places in Europe and would provide for me to meet up with their friends and our community continued to grow. Other friends of mine from here in the U.S. were traveling the same way and we'd also meet up in different places throughout Europe and they'd introduce me to the friends that they had made and vice versa.
    When I decided to no longer spend 10-11 weeks straight at a time in Europe, I would still make my base in the same city, but for 2-3 weeks and then take it from there. And when I stopped staying in the same building, I had made such a strong community of friends in that same city, until there were friends inviting me to stay with them. Also during my last 2 years of 2-3 week visits of being in the same city, before the pandemic, I got an Airbnb apartment in the neighborhood of my closest friends.
    I travel differently depending on where I'm going in the world and what continent I'm on. When in Asia and Europe, I tend to stay longer and when in North Africa, West Africa, South America, Australia, New Zealand, etc, I tend to stay for shorter periods although with friends in New Zealand and Australia and whom I met while in Europe on trains on my quick-travel schedule away from my main European city. I met both my Kiwi and Australian friends, in different years, but at the end of one of my quick-travel trips, but when I was headed back up to my regular European city, Copenhagen, where I've been since a teen in the early/mid 1970s.
    One way to make community ties if one is doing long term stays in one place is to enroll in a local language school and go to class daily. I never got bored on long stays as I tied in and did things within the community and met a lot fo people who were living in my overseas city as permanent residents.
    For the first decade, I got up every morning and biked across town to my language school and became friends with the foreigners in my classes. Then, after class, I'd go around the city and practice my language skills and made friends with more people. Or the foreign students and I would hang out. When I got back to where I was living, which was like a co-op, I could continue to practice my language skills with native speakers and also get help with my homework. It just takes some creativity, planning, and patience to figure a way to go from an annual tourist status to sort of a regular part-time resident status, but while still on a 90-day tourist allowance in certain countries or regions.
    I think that after you two figure out what places you like the best, while doing fast travel, then it's time to pick maybe two or three places to possibly settle down in and rotate for a longer period of time than usual and then start connecting with the communities in those places and making friends as just traveling without real connections gets really tiring at some point.
    Years before the pandemic struck, I was figuring out a way to stay in Southeast Asia for longer. I started my research back in 2014/2015. I've been going to the region regularly since the late 1990s. I had thought of the Malaysia My Second Home visa and did the research. It would have given me 10 years to come and go as I pleased and then I could come home and continue to work part-time in my profession and check up on and visit family and friends here, until deciding not to work anymore although I officially retired at 56.
    One of my best male friends did the same, but back and forth from the U.S. and Italy. He retired at a young age and left the U.S. and moved to his paid-for condo in Italy which he had bought around 20 years before retiring at age 55. But, like he did, I would have always kept a residence here. He kept his condo in the U.S., also paid for, but leased it out. And when it wasn't leased out, he'd stay in it for when he came back to visit family and friends across the U.S. He lived on the East Coast.
    My plan was to possibly get the Malaysian visa, as I qualified for it, and then spend time in Thailand, where my heart is, but one only gets 30 days there unless one can get an extended time on one's visa and I didn't want a retirement visa there. Too many hoops to jump through. Thailand makes things complicated. And then I could also have done Singapore where one automatically gets up to 90 days, I think it is and Malaysia is 90 days, but that wouldn't have mattered as I would have already had a 10-year visa to come and go. And then at some point, maybe stay for months in Malaysia as I have close Malaysian friends, my former Airbnb hosts. We're like family and they call and e-mail me often and we would also meet up in Malaysia after my weeks in Thailand and before me moving on to Singapore and then also either sometimes to quick travel to Indonesia and once all the way to to Hong Kong from Singapore and then back to Singapore before flying home to L.A.

      Thank you for all the wonderful info. We do love the idea of staying in one place longer and traveling from there, all while keeping a "home base". This is so much more affordable in Europe and SE Asia where you can get around by train and air at such an affordable price. Not packing your belongings all the time, but just a quick few-day bag is so much nicer as well. As always, thanks so much for watching! Cheers!!

      Yeah, finding an overseas home base and becoming part of a community in some way, transforms one from a tourist into a semi resident. Oh, and if you're looking for places to stay, check out the equivalent of university dorms/co-ops as that's where I stayed for the first decade of summer trips although I don't know if that system is still in place for summer rentals.
      Many students would leave and either go back to their parents' houses located around the country or travel around Europe and North Africa on Inter-Rail during the summer as I think Morocco was added to the Inter-Rail pass, But, they still needed to pay their rent for two summer months. And although I was a full-time university student here at home, it had nothing to do with needing to be one there during the summer. Plus, at some point, I had finished both undergrad and grad school here, but was still living in a dorm/co-op there.
      The dorms/co-ops were not connected to any one university. It was general student housing for full-time university/college/ tech school, etc students during the regular school year. I ended up renting a room each summer and paying the student's rent. I stayed on two different floors in a 10-story building.
      On my first day on my floor in the building, looking like a lost sheep, the guys on my floor saw me sitting alone in the communal kitchen and asked if I wanted to come to the park and play soccer with them. So, I tagged along and we had a great time. They became some of my best friends for decades. Everyone was really nice.
      As for the building, each floor had two wings of 16 rooms each and a communal kitchen on each wing. We either planned our meals together during the regular week or cooked and ate separately on the weekends. There was also a free laundry room in the building (3 big washers/1 big dryer). My rent back then was $122. a month and during the 10th summer, still less then $200 month even with rent increases.1975-1985 as before then, I lived with a family for the first two summers. Plus, while at the building in the summer, I noticed some people staying there who were around my parents' age back then. There were a lot of such buildings around the city.
      Greetings from Los Angeles

    Thx again for an excellent video! I think your definition of slow travel is one month at a time, fast travel is maybe less than a week in one city. I think there can be something in the middle which l called it “mellow” travel. It is to stay at one place 10- 14 days. That way you won’t get bored and still feel like home with the groceries and things. This would be enough time to explore the surrounding regions and take some day trips. Of course this would cost more than the slow travel. Like you said it’s all depending on your personal tastes and style. I hope someday you can do a “mellow trip” for 2- 3 months and tell us your thoughts. Thx !
