Looking for the best 25mm lens for Leica? Perhaps you just found it! If you search for Leica 25mm lens you will find that Leica only make 24mm lenses. Here I look at the Zeiss Biogon 25mm f2.8 lens (ZM mount which is the Leica M mount version). I show the Voigtlander 25mm vs Zeiss 25mm for size comparison. Video also includes Zeiss Biogon 25mm sample photos - I enjoy using it as a walkabout lens and especially for my Leica wedding photography.

Well-done, informative presentation. Thanks! I really do love my 50mm Leica lenses; Summilux-M ASPH, Summicron-M Special Edition “Rigid” replica, with 1979 optical elements, and Elmar-M collapsible, but will readily use Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander VM lenses, in the other focal lengths. I just took delivery of a well-preserved, pre-owned sample of the Zeiss 25mm Biogon ZM, through the evil-bay. The price was a bit less than $600 US, before taxes and shipping.

Thanks a lot. 🙏 I’am reorganizing my “gear” and noticed there’s a lag between 21 an 35. This 25mm is now high on my list. 🙏
The walkabout lens: well, when I go out, I just choose one lens+camera and then I find the pictures that matches that frame ( 15, 21, 27, 35, 50, 75, 100, 150 all 35eq)). Its a nice way off looking around and framing the world. My main choice is 15, 21, 27, 35, If have to pick one 27, Even walking around with 100mm zeiss macro f2 (planar) is big fun, amazing (on apsc or full frame, or 44x33) etc....
I almost forgot, the camera (restrictions/posibilities) also frames my frame, if that makes sense to jou. Its playing around...😁

In the wide department, started out on 24 (1.4 nikkor g), moved on to 25 (f2 zeiss zf), finally arrived at 28 (f2 zeiss zf, less analytic than the 25, nicer rendering). Like all three focal lengths. My preference for the 28 is based on the model’s character, not its focal length. - Cool video, matt!

I use a 1970s Zuiko 24mm f2.8 on my Fuji X-Pro1 and my OM1N. I have three examples and I prefer the rendering of the above mentioned lens to the later multi coated version. The corners are slightly soft wide open, but the centre definition is fairly decent.
I'm surprised you've never tried an OM1, they are decent little cameras. My last Leica was a iiif red dial, which was very rewarding to use.

Just added the Biogon 25 zm. Now I am all m mount on my SL2-S. I have really fallen in love with prime manual focus even on the SL2-S. I tried the big SL lens and just did not like the size and have fallen out of favor of using AF. Nice review. I had the Voigtlander 28/2 Ultron II on my list but with the Zeiss Distagon 35/1.4 too close to the same FL.

Thanks for the review. Im a Canon body/Zeiss ZE lens/28mm+ guy. I know what you mean about the 25- I had some fuji lenses (sold last year) and fell in love with their 16mm over the 18mm. I also have both the 28 and 25 Zeiss ZE. I'm again into Leica (in film days I had R4, 5, 6s; M3 and M6- sold for child support) and looking at this 25! I'm comparing with the Elmarit 24, but I love Zeiss, and its cheaper. My leica is monochrome (and Q2M) for myself, the R5/R with the zeiss for the range if I'm not walking.

I also love their 2.8/16mm as a walk-around street photography lens. In other words, I know what you mean about 24/25mm being the sweet spot between 21mm and 28mm.

I use 24mm, many years ago I used 28mm. The 28mm I find is often OK wide at the long horizontal side, but the short vertical side are often too narrow for landscape photography, you get often too little sky or foreground. I also have a 20mm which I sometimes use, but is is most the 24mm. I think 20/21mm, 24/25mm and 35mm wide angle lenses are the most useable :) I have tryied wider lenses down to 13mm, it can be very impressive some times if you have fx an impressive sky with clouds of an interior where there are not room enough to use a 20/21mm, but in the long run I get tired of watching those ultra wide angle images. I do not have a 35mm at the moment, but I am thinking of getting one for walk around candid lens, at this time I use either the 24mm or a 60mm for candid shooting.

Nice video as usual and indeed a very attractive lens. Regarding focusing, I assume that since it is a wide angle lens, if you shoot at say f8 and use the hyper focal distance (put infinity on f8), everything from about 10 feet to infinity would be in focus.

How does the Zeiss 25/2.8 hold up in Infrared light? The CV 25/4 Snapshot Skopar is perfect here, tested recently with IR film. Love the Snapshot Skopar which I use on my IIIc and on M cameras as well. I like its image quality and compact size. Zone focusing always gets me right with it, too. Voigtländer also offers a newer 21/25 viewfinder which is smaller and brighter than the one you showed.

How accurate is the infinity stop ? I have quite a few Leica lenses and their infinity stop is spot on. Nikon mostly is OK as well but no other brand ever 'made' it.
For me a hard infinity is make or break, I do only landscape work , now retired from 45 years commercial photoraphy it is a nice paid 'hobby'. But my eyesight is getting less and so a hard infinity is for me super imporatant. I could not find the answer anywhere - so you are my last hope !

28/50 guy. Bought a Q, then (f me) a 246 monochrome. Haven’t had Leica since film days. Have every Zeiss ZE mount on a few Canon R/R5 bodies. For M, Bought a 50 nokton 1.2, summarit 90 2.5, and now the wides. I’m also gravitating to 25 after loving the Fuji 16 so much. Dunno… get a 25, then 21?

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks, man. i see we're both lens fanatics. I once tested every 50mm, adapted or converted, on ef.
      I'm thinking if I did 21, then do I sell the Q to fund a 25, or more likely, a 28?

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I messed up. Trading the 25 biogon for a 21 SEM. I’ll get a 21 3.5 VM for my pocket, but I’ll Q>Q2 for that M gap. Just stick to the plan (me).

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I am concerned the Biogon may not work too well on a sensor not specially design for this type of lens. What do you reckon? Did you ever adapt it to any other digital full frame body?

    Hi
    Surprise surprise i use a 25mm voigtlander but also have a Zeiss 35mm f2 and 50m f2 .
I believe right or wrong that both Zeiss and voigtlander are made in the same factory?

I’m looking for the best 35mm in Leica M. I’m convinced its the Zeiss 35mm F1.4 distagon. Your thoughts.

Depends if need fast or small. Yes Distagon is possibly the best but Biogon 35mm is amazing too and smaller. (From my knowledge/ what I’ve seen).

Matt Osborne Thank you Matt! Wide angle primes can be tricky in a digital era when original designs were for film. I hope Zeiss makes another 90mm, 45mm similar to the Contax G90 and G45. My two favorite Zeiss lenses to uses on mirror less. Kicking myself for not getting them converted to M’s when I could.
