Val Kilmer definitely deserved a lot of credit for his performance in this movie as Doc Holliday. But Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo gave a great performance also that not enough people talk about.
@heatheraggus7501 It sucks because character actors rarely get noticed. You have a few exceptions like Daniel Day Lewis, Willem Dafoe, and Gary Oldman, but for the most part, it hardly ever happens.
One of the greatest unsung elements of this movie is the Foley work and the sound design. Holy crap. Not just the action of the revolvers but every little sound from poker chips to water splashes. It really gives the movie a visceral quality.
How Dan talked about his mom passing down her movie taste to him. It reminded me how I got into the film by my own mom the same way. She bought the VHS version, raved about Val Kilmer's performance and it being her favorite Western. When I was old enough I watched it. Bought the DVD then upgraded to Blu-Ray once it was available.
Thanks for sharing, Dan! Tombstone is one of the few movies I am just never ever tired of -- such a rich cast and I'm so glad it started getting the love it's deserved.
I love Tombstone, especially like the Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday face off in Latin, and love Doc’s cup spinning. Michael Biehn was fantastic as Johnny Ringo, doesn’t get enough credit for his contribution.
I saw this movie because Val Kilmer is in it. I loved it so much even though I don't usually like westerns. I really recommend watching movies because of some reason besides the plot/genre of the movie just so you find something new. Last year i watched all the academy award nominees and I found some very, very good movies that I would otherwise had never seen. I also like to watch movies by actor (like this one) because if the movie is bad (cough cough I Saw the Light from 2015) at least you have someone pretty/interesting (Tom Hiddleston) to watch and to make it less bad. Really, just pick your favourite actor/actress, randomly pick a title and watch it, it will 9 out of 10 times be worth it.
Thank you for being the Lenard Molton of our time. Introducing and discussing the history of modern classics to people who wouldn’t otherwise know without doing a bunch of crazy research ourselves.
You talking about your mom introducing you to Tombstone really touched me. My mom did the exact same thing with me and has introduced me to so many of her favorite films which also end up being my favorites. Film folklore like this is something that will allow the truly great films like Tombstone to live on forever.
Once again Mr.Murrell you’ve outdone yourself 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽👌🏽 Love this film, one of the last Great western stories ever told in cinemas. 🎞 How it never garnished any accolades recognition from the academy is such a shame.
I went to Tombstone, AZ this past December, and it is really cool seeing the movie use a lot of the real outdoor scenery. It is a fun place to visit, and the movie is quite good as well.
Some parts (like the early train scene) were filmed at Old Tucson Studios a historic film studio outside Tucson, which has sadly closed due to covid. A lot of the actors and stunt guys in tombstone have also worked there on small movies or even working for the day park.
It’s interesting to learn the history of these movies and how close some of them got to either not being made or having different actors and directors take over. Thank you for the info and explaining it all in a way that’s really enjoyable to watch.
I rewatched this earlier this week because it's my uncle's favorite movie and it was good birthday, so I watched it in his honor. This has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid because my uncle loved it so much. One generation passing it to another. Val Kilmer's performance is one of my favorite performances of all time. I own the Director's Cut DVD, I have but updated to bluray yet. Great breakdown, Dan.
Ok it's a little bit of a reach but......growing up I've actually been in rainstorms where it was pouring on one side of the street and bone dry on the other. Also I've always felt that the rain pouring down on a bloodied Wyatt was the character's baptism and absolution and therefore fitting to be localized around him.
Dan, just a note: "Vajna" is pronounced as "Vy-na" (rhymes with "my nah"). :) It's a Hungarian name. Anyway, I watched this when it came out, and really liked it, despite barely knowing who the characters were (I'm not American). I think it's time to watch it again!
Thank you for this show absolutely love it.. Most movies I have seen. And when your talking about one I haven’t I cannot wait to watch it so I can listen to the show.. Tombstone has being on my to watch list for so long, after I saw the notification for your show going home and watching it right away
Dan I gotta say, I got through about an hr of Tombstone. To the part where Kurt tells his wife they should get a room when she's drinking her medicine, after he spent some time with the other woman and their horses. And he's just like "nevermind forget about it" and the whole love story took me out so I just shut it off. It's one of my friends favorite films so I asked to borrow it. Seeing you say that it's a weakness of the film makes me feel better and validates my feelings about it. But you also makes me feel like I should give Tombstone another try.
Hi Dan! Really love All My Movies. I have always thought that the love interest story always got in the way. It was nice to hear someone else say it too. Didn't hate it but just found it unnecessary. Thanks for your channel!
I literally rewatched this last night! Second favorite western (only second to the original magnificent seven). I Love hearing the story of the making of the movies
I didn't know the scene used for the end credits was deleted from the approach to the shootout. When I first saw it, I couldn't help but compare it to the end credit music video at the end of "Buckeroo Banzai" (which also featured a character who died during the movie).
I want 2023 to see a 4K scan of this film with the theatrical film and a new reassembled longer cut. I want the director's commentary and scattered various interviews that chronicle the making of this troubled, brilliant movie. In short, I want at last the definitive Tombstone. It only took 30 years.
I have watched this movie at least 10 times..& I’m never disappointed..it’s all about the brothers & Doc Holiday. The Costner movie was a shadow of this movie. Russel & Kilmer did the damn thing!!!
Tombstone is a great Western, loved it. Remember back then when there wehre two Wyatt Earp movies about to come out and everybody was looking forward to the Kevin Costner Movie only to find put Tombstone was the better one.
@@DanMurrellMovies I am such a dad and will back this up. :D At the time the film was released, I was an unruly young man in a (then) largely undeveloped part of Texas. This film was a HUGE deal to desert-dwellers, like us. I've been to actual Tombstone a number of times.
Speaking of amazballs Val Kilmer performances, I would love for you to do an AMM episode on Heat. That bank shootout scene alone can be a whole episode
You probably already know this, Dan, but just in case, there's a lesser-known movie called 3000 Miles to Graceland which stars both Wyatt Earps -- Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner -- as two Elvis impersonators. It's not especially good or anything, but I always think about it as a burying of the hatchet on what is probably an only-in-my-mind feud between the two actors. It's especially delightful because Kurt Russell also played Elvis in a biopic when he was younger AND he played the voice of Elvis in Forrest Gump! Anyway, just some weird trivia that I thought might interest you.
#Release the Tombstone directors cut. I've said for years that Val Kilmer Doc Holiday performance was worthy of an Oscar. I'm your huckleberry. So good.
This is my second favorite western. I don’t have the same complaints as Dan, I think the love story added to the movie. Watched it a million times and never noticed the rain thing. I don’t notice those things in movies I like. My only complaint is the narration at the end; I could not care less that some actor cried at his funeral. I make sure to stop watching or change channel after we hear they stayed together and before the whole actor crying line. Take out the last one or two lines and the movie is perfect, otherwise it’s 99.98 out of 100.
@@DanMurrellMovies Not sure if it's one of "your" movies, but have you/plan one for Full Metal Jacket? So much wild stuff going on there in the production
The only time I ever bought a VHS when it was first released. Studio VHS tapes were EXPENSIVE(!!!) back then! $99.00!! I loved the movie so much though, and I so wanted to turn my girlfriend and my other friends on to the movie, that I bought it just to show it to them!
I've always thought it was a weird way of taunting/insulting him - Doc is saying "C'mon, c'mon, shoot me." Kind of a 'you're not so bad' moment. It explains his "you're no daisy at all" comment - it's a call back to "you're a daisy if you do" during the OK Corral fight. A daisy can best Holliday, and Ringo couldn't do it.
The aristocratic Southern accent may be rare, but it can still be found. I ran across a few old gents in Charleston, SC., who sound a bit like Foghorn Leghorn but classier.
@Chris Sears it authenticity captured what it would feel like to make contact with an outside intelligence but threw in just enough wonder and spectacle to be entertaining. Classic film.
I appreciate Dan’s commitment to pointing out that in the ‘90s MTV Movie Awards often are a better guidepost to what would stand the test of time than the Oscars…minus Most Desirable Male Billy Baldwin…yikes! But they did pick Pulp Fiction over Forrest Gump for best picture…just saying!

The worst thing to do when playing a bad guy is to play a bad guy - Michael Biehn
Sums up so much of his methodology as an actor
Val Kilmer definitely deserved a lot of credit for his performance in this movie as Doc Holliday. But Michael Biehn as Johnny Ringo gave a great performance also that not enough people talk about.
Michael Biehn isn't talked about enough in general!

You could do a episode for just the mustaches in this movie.
Fun fact: Every mustache in Tombstone was real except one, Jon Tenney who refused due to another project he was filming at the time.
One of the greatest unsung elements of this movie is the Foley work and the sound design. Holy crap. Not just the action of the revolvers but every little sound from poker chips to water splashes. It really gives the movie a visceral quality.
Val Kilmer did not get nominated for an Oscar. Crazy.
Why would he need a nomination? A lion does not seek the approval of hyenas.
Dan, I'm never going to forgive you for making me aware of the rain, or lack thereof!
I know! If you'd never noticed it before, you probably would never know! Now you'll never not see it! Damn you Dan, damn you all to hell! :D
Yep my friend did the same thing to me. Now I can never unsee it.
That's probably one of the scenes that got cut down.
I noticed it literally immediately when watching it for the first time today. It looks so weird.😂

Dan, I have a copy of the director’s cut version with his commentary, enhanced for 16x9 tv’s if you want it. I can mail it to you.
