This is a nice surprise. I just finished the DLC and it’s THE BEST DLC imo. The fastest way to access the DLC is to defeat Radahn and Mohg. You should easily be able to find Radahn as you progress the storyline, and the fastest way to get to Mohg is to do the White-Mask Varré’s quest line. Imo, you shouldn’t rush to the DLC if this is your first playthrough, the DLC is considered as endgame content, it's harder than the main game even with the new scaling mechanics, I personally recommend level 150+. I will suggest have fun completing the main game and learn about the lore first, then you will have the best time playing the DLC. Btw, the Alter Garments option is to let you remove the capes or robes of the armors for fashion purposes, also can help lower the equip load of your character.
