@@mikecrane2782 So is the rolling tool box. I would say about 2" wider for the handle that slides up. The only streamlined option is to custom make yourself dolly wheels. But in my opinion that makes the stack less stable as the corners are no longer fully supported.
Also the drawers in a rolling box would not be square inside, or wouldnt be as wide. Because the rolling box wheels do take up internal space. The only way to make for normal drawers would be to increase the total footprint of the box on the sides to let the wheels stick out.
My vote is dolly wheels or a collapsible hand truck like the cosco folding hand truck.

    • @brandonhoffman4712
      @brandonhoffman4712 7 месяцев назад

@@paulhays2171 packout tried to make a collapsible hand truck to solve the issue, but it sucks and failed. They have 4 wheeled dollies for the system, but its 0 box for $100...
My father and i each got a rolling box as our first box, early in the packout ecosystem. We were mostly looking to replace our soft rolling husky tool bags that would die every 3-5years with something more robust. The boxes definetly served their purpose. It was also a much better system @ the time than the systainer system festool was using. Much more robust and larger capacity for 18" tools like a 4" floor scraper or good claw hammer. The problem reared its ugly head for me when i got my 4th box. Suddenly it was a box shuffle anytime i wanted a tool. Luckily about the same time, boxes with drawers were showing up @ home depot. I didnt even consider them for a while, figuring it was more plastic junk. Then i finally watched a review and my mind was changed in moments. I went to the store, tested the functionality of the 3 drawer unit, and took it home. My 1st test was to see if my jig saw would fit in there, it did! Most of my cutting tools now reside in a 2 drawer and 3 drawer unit. Only a skil saw is left unboxed, i even tossed a 15ga nailer and franklin stud sensor in 1 of the 2 drawers until i find a cutting tool for that drawer.
Im currently working up ideas for my 2nd stack. Its more general use/marking tools. Im thinking a 2 drawer and a 4 drawer, but maybe a 2 drawer and the split size 3 drawer? Decisions, decisions...

The top drawer in my packout holds 4 razor knifes, 2 snap blade knives, a tajima folding pull saw, electrical pliers, needle nose, nippers, 2x flush cut pliers, 4" window scraper, straight razor scraper, 100pk straight blades, 100pk razor blades, 2x 10 packs snap blades, 2x 20 packs 4" scraper blades, jig saw blade assortment (for the saw in drawer 2), multi tool blade assortment (also drawer 2). Plus i know im forgetting things! And thats just drawer 1... Not certain there is room for foam up there!
I do like the ratchet sets. But my industry doesnt really need that. My mini husky clamshell 1/4" and 3/8" set has lasted me decades - one 1/2" socket i had to replace and 1 1/4" ratchet that disappeared.
Ohh ya, my top drawer also has a handle for sawzall blades, and a sawzall blade assortment (for the hackzall in the bottom of the stack in the 2 drawer box)

As someone who is getting close to justifying a stacking toolbox, but isnt quite there yet, I'm waiting to see how stacktech turns out over the summer. Seems they've basically taken every single complaint about packout and said "we can fix that." Drawers, cabinet roller, handtruck with box mounting points, a cart that elevates into a truck bed, shelves to mount boxes properly vs just a giant stack you have to play musical boxes ect. Milwaukee for the last few years has been building their brand on "we're simply better than everyone else" and now flex is bringing pain on the tool front and soon toughbuilt will bring it on the storage front.
In the end the winners of competition are always the consumer, but I just can't wait to see how 2024 unfolds for these storage technologies

As someone who bought in long ago. I both hear your woes and am happy with my packout system. I dont think a perfect solution exists, nor can it. My only complaint with the packout system has been my original purchase of my rolling box. I wouldn't recommend anyone get one.
I have seen many companies coming out with many convoluted systems with too much fluff. I dont have space in my vehicle for boxes with wingdings and rail mounts. I dont want parts bins hanging off my stack, nor do i want to unwind my power cord from my packout stack each morning...
For me, packout has been a godsend. Our crew used to have 3-4 soft rolling husky toolbags and a big ass metal box to put all the tools into and lock up. One that weighed like 300lbs and took 3 dudes to get out of the truck. This is after completley unloading it only to reload after taking out. Then all over again @ the end of the job... Now i can have full access @ my vehicle, i can roll in what i want as i want, i have improved workflow, and i dont have to buy a new soft rolling tool bag every year to keep up with degrading fabric.
Im still assembling my packout into its final form. Its going to be 2 tall stacks with a 3rd in reserve @ the shop. Every stack will be drawer units with 1 or 2 boxes on top. I have some open bins to toss on as needed for a catch-all onsite after unstacked. A 15" tool tote to use as a tool catch all daily, and 1 large 1/2 box as a battery box. 1 stack is for measuring, marking, and assembly. 1 stack is for cutting, drilling, and general use. 1 stack is for finishing/cleaning (kept @ the shop until needed)
I still have my rolling box waiting to find its future home, it has 4 boxes of sandpaper in it. I also inherited my fathers rolling box, havent even opened it since it became mine. I refuse to work that way any longer. No more box shuffle.
All of this stuff stemmed from festool with their systainer system. Its been an evolving thing from that. With the festool stuff it wasnt nearly as noticeable doing the shuffle. Because its only 1 tool per box, its kind of expected already, and not as much of a hassle, because your only going @ the stack 1-2 times per day. Once these box systems became more than just tool boxes for larger standalone tools, things changed.
I say you do you! Choose the system you like best. You seem well researched on the ins and outs of modern toolboxology. Im confident you will land on your feet!
My favorite standouts for packout have been durability and ease of connecting stacks. My most hated standout of all these systems, is the tool stack shuffle. DONT DANCE WITH YOUR TOOL BOXES, it wont grant a promotion, thats for sure!

Not the place I expected an answer to the difference but an answer is an answer.

Storage is always a compromise between volume and organisation. That setup optimises organisation, however in reality all of those tools would fit in one drawer albeit poorly organised. An in between for example would be using socket rails instead of being placed individually in foam.
The problem I had with my pack out setup on the packout trolley was that according to Milwaukee’s own dimensions the drawers for example were only 40% space efficient, and when I need to break it all down and go up a bunch of stairs the setup on its own weighs 40kgs.
I’ve gone back to aluminium tool boxes that can stack, and have one fitted with wheels. It’s not as organised as the packout setup but carrying more tools with the extra volume and weight saved, means that when that tool is absolutely needed even though I might have to dig a bit for it at least it’s there.
In construction I find one setup works for me in every occasion, if I wind up on a job with no stairs or one with a hoist at least the packout might make a comeback.

Exciting. I concur! Bottom (carrier) box should be a drawer. Also, need the electrical screwdriver. And, for pete's sake, make the socket markers big and colored so they are identified instantly.

Whats the electrical screwdrivers use? I normally see electricians shut off the power and use power tools.
Totally agree on large contrasting markings for sockets.
And yes, i think this whole chatroom wants a rolling drawer unit! If milwaukee isnt cooking something up i would be suprised. I just dont know if i can wait long enough for it to be part of my kit. Im itching to complete the underpinnings of my 2nd stack and unburden myself from the tool stack shuffle.

@jstpsgthru no I'm wondering what it's use is? As in beyond a multi-bit screw driver?
Are you talking about the kind with a kink in it and a bearing?
The best leverage I've found with 1/4" bits is an impact gun. I would say it's more than needed for switches and outlets, but nice to have for sure. Totally overkill for cover plates though. Which is why I asked about the kinky screwdriver.

    • @brandonhoffman4712
      @brandonhoffman4712 7 месяцев назад

Just looked up the ecx... I dont see a reason to buy it.
Klein has 2 interesting options if i were in the market. I currently have a ratcheting multi driver from dewalt and milwaukee competing in my kit.
A 13 in one ratcheting driver made to hold longer impact bits (model #32313HD). I only really use the longer bits anymore.
Or an 8 in insulated precision screwdriver (model #32584INSR) for the electrically inclined.
Both of those sets interest me, no clue on price.

    Excellent and professional presentation!
Good to see they rebranded Knipex on the cobra pliers.
3 (including 2 mult+bit screwdrivers) will cover all the screwdriver needs, including hex as well.
Plierswrench covers most of the bolt and nuts fastening.
It's pretty but using multifunctional tools you could shrink it down to 1 maybe 2 drawers for 80% of use.
    I have 1/4 set from 4-15mm reg/swivel/deep, 3/8 from 13-22mm in two 1/2 depth 1/2 width boxes.
Wrench roll, Knipex pliers, Wera screwdrivers with extra 90mm blades.
I cannot live without swivel sockets and locking extensions.
A tip for keeping drawers from sagging/scrubbing with mechanic tools, cut 3/16 aluminum plate to fit the bottom.
Second tip.... the cabinet holds track and circular saws turned sideways.
Having lived with only 2 and 3 drawer, am looking forward to the new 4 and mult-size 3 drawer.

I was thinking the same thing with the screw driver insert. That whole drawer basically fits in the tray of my large box, with room for my other stuff of similar size and ubiquitous function.
The measuring and cutting insert is a joke. My measuring and cutting is a stack 4-5' tall and still doesnt have a hacksaw, but im no hack! It does have a hackzall though, so ill shut it!
I too am happy for more types of drawers! I have lived through doing the box shuffle for about a month or 2 before deciding it was drawers or bust. Im cool with 1-2 boxes on top of the stack @ most. The cabinet i find mostly uninteresting, my track saw has a systainer it fits in great, and my skill saw is unworthy of one as it has too many siblings already (probably 5 in the garage in varying states of decay). I considered it for spray cans and caulk tubes, meh... knowing me it would wind up with bread an chips in there after being tired of crap rolling around in it, maybe some disposable silverware...
Ive been happy with everything ive bought from the packout line except the rolling box, that thing was a trap! Though i dont think anyone really knew @ the time it would become one. For me @ the time it was a great replacement to huskies soft rolling tool bags that i had to replace bi-annually. The box still paid for itself, it was just outgrown. I do think anyone would outgrow it though, so i dont recommend it to anyone.
