  • Stocking a pond with bass fry is one of the biggest mistakes you can make, especially if there is already an established bass population in the pond.
    Join us as we explain why we stock larger fish and why our bass are genetically-superior to anything you'll find.

    Are the F1 hybrid Largies!? The kinds that can grow up to 20+ pounds? Thats what Dottie was if I'm not mistaken. I think the current world record from Japan was also a pure F1 hybrid Largemouth.

    Hey I have a question for y’all. A friend of mine is a ranch foreman and there are a few ponds on the ranch. Now the ponds have established catfish in them. After watching some of your episodes I know he can’t just put bass in there and bait fish need to be established first and let them spawn. Can we get a bait fish or forge for the bass with the catfish already in there.

      Catfish will eat bluegill, which is the preferred forage species for bass. As long as you account for the catfish predation and overstock somewhat, there should still be plenty for the bass. If you can stock larger sunfish, that might also help with the catfish predation.

    Does it make a difference if you release them all in the same or different areas of a pond depending on size? Thanks

      They should spread out pretty well even if you put them all in the same spot. We've never released them in multiple locations around the pond bank.

    So having carp is not all to bad ?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 года назад +2

      Carp aren't a bad thing for a pond as long as they are the sterile, triploid type that can't reproduce. They do tend to get pretty lazy when they get old, but they can be a benefit to a pond with vegetation issues. The big misconception with carp is that they eat all vegetation, but that's not true. There are some things they won't eat.

    What is your opinion of Pike?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 года назад

      We don't see many of them down here. We'll see a few chain pickerel in a pond every now and then, but they're really not part of our management strategy down here.

    So putting a 20lb catfish in my friends small pond was probably a bad idea.

    • @TLCPerfectPond

      Depends on what the goal for the pond is. Catfish will compete with bass for resources, although one catfish is probably not going to be a big deal.

    tiger bass?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 года назад +2

      It's actually called a Titan Bass. They grow faster than anything we've seen if they have enough to eat.

  • @taco1212

    I must be having trouble following you. The vegetation is keeping the bass from feeding. Also, the bass are overpopulated and the bluegill population is small. So you added more bass? And you added bluegill to boost their numbers. But bluegill, even tiny bluegill, reproduce absurdly fast. Is this just a peculiar customer who said he wanted results as fast as possible and that money was no object?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 года назад +2

      There were a couple issues in this pond:
      1) Too much vegetation cover. Some vegetation is good because it provides cover for bluegill. But too much vegetation means that the bass have to work too hard to find food. They'll expend just as much energy catching food as they obtain from the food itself. As a result, they don't grow as fast as they should.
      2) Not enough bluegill. You're right about bluegill being fast reproducers. But if the population numbers are really low, they'll never catch up and become abundant. Sometimes stocking is the best option as opposed to waiting. We know from experience that these hybrid bass we stock are really heavy feeders. We won't stock them unless there is an abundant bluegill population, otherwise you're just shooting yourself in the foot.
      Hope that helps.

      @@TLCPerfectPond Thanks. I don't know if I'm completely convinced about stocking large fish but I'm enjoying your videos a lot. Keep up the good work!
