Let me preface this by saying I am not a big time sewer. I can hem and do minor things with my sewing machine (I'm 56) but let me tell you! lol I watched your video to the end, walked into my craft room, cut the Reese's bag and (with minor changes since I didn't have the sticky vinyl) I CREATED A ZIPPERED BAG! I'm so excited. You even showed me how to put in a zipper that I'd never seen before but that is the best tip I've learned in a long time. I love the extra pop that the material on the zipper ends gave. You have made me very happy today. I thank you and my Mom (83) will thank you when she receives her new Reese's bag which are her favorite candies.
My mother and I wanted to make this a long time using plastic bags that had my family company logo on it. My father closed the business several years ago. My parents both passed in the recent months and in cleaning out we came across the company bags. So I just made one and it is fabulous! These will be great gifts for my siblings, nieces and nephews. A wonderful memento for everyone.
I had the idea to use this tutorial to make bags out of vintage pattern envelopes. After 2 bags that weren't good enough to give as gifts, #3 finally came out to my satisfaction. If you are using vintage pattern envelopes, you might consider the following modifications: after bonding the vinyl and squaring up the front and back, use a 1 inch fabric strip (either the same as the lining, or a contrasting fabric) to border all sides of the front and back. I also cut the 2 bottom corners with my curved ruler, so that the 2 bottom corners were not square, but rounded. You could use a small plate to get the same effect. The first 2 bags, I quilted. The third bag, I just stitched in the ditch (between the pattern and the fabric strip). Turning the bag right side out is a challenge, and having the bottom corners rounded makes it just a little bit easier. The other thing I noticed is that the pattern becomes wrinkled as a result of turning it right side out. I can't see any way to avoid that. I did try putting the finished bag in the ironing board, covering it with the paper that came off the vinyl . . . but no difference. Still a great idea. One bag finished. Five more to go.
Thanks SO much, Jenny, for this fun idea. Your videos are getting me through my darkest hours of grief and loss. I am grateful for your cheerful voice, kind face, and great talent.
A helpful hint for turning vinyl inside out is to heat up your ironing board then lay the pouch on it to warm it up. It turns a lot easier when it is warm. Works well for all vinyl & oilcloth. Love your bags!
You never fail in your great tutorials. Easy to follow. My daughter loved the bag I made her. Candy bar is a Big Hunk. An old candy that is for sure. It came with a clear window in the front. So instead of looking at the batting, I put some lining material in the window. But if I was really thinking.....I could have put rapers from the candy bar in the window going all different directions, then the lining material. What a simple amazing wonderful project. Thank you being a amazing wonderful person. I wish I could have met you when I visited Hamilton a couple of years ago. P.S. not sure what needle to use sewing on vinyl, so I used a Sharps needle.
Hey Jenny! Well this just proves, one woman's trash is a quilters treasure!😉 I love it and my family will love the presents I have in mind for each of them. I love your teaching style. I would never have been able to quilt without your tutorials. I know you are not going to believe this but I have never read a pattern successfully. I have to watch a process to understand it. I have always struggled with this, let's just say Mrs. Leaphart, my high school Home Ec teacher, retired after teaching me. Anyway, you give such JOY to my life with quilting, sewing, and crafting. Thank you Jenny! Have a blessed and happy Fourth of July 😘!! Laura
Hello Laura! Thank you so much for your kind words! We are so lucky to have wonderful members of our Missouri Star family like you! :) Thank you for tuning into the tutorials, and for all of your support throughout the years.
Laura, I just wanted to let you know that there are many of us out here that can learn by seeing and doing better than reading. And if you go back and read the directions after you’ve seen someone do it, they tend to make sense ‘then’. There are visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic (sp?) learners. The more you engage all three areas the more connections in the brain it makes. AND the best way to put something in permanently, show someone else how to do it. That’s how a little girl that I taught some basic sewing skills to, at age 7, was teaching her friends how to sew in zippers by age 10. You tube videos became her source when I moved away. She even won a district sewing award at 11 from Kohl’s Find someone to share with. And have a wonder filled day.
Laura, I too can only get the gist when watching Jenny and a pattern is no good to me because I can't understand any of it, if I try I just get more frustrated...
Me too!! Me too!! This ol’ grandma has been sewing since she was 7. I even made my own wedding gown. Put a quilt pattern WITH precuts in front of me and promise me the (guaranteed) winning lottery ticket plus a bag of mini m&ms if I finish and I’ll still be poor and sugar deprived at the end of the day. I need a good Missouri Star video first.
I had a friend who said that she could only learn something she had to do with her hands if someone showed her how. I noticed afterwards that I am the same way.
I just love you, I would love to spend a whole day with you showing me how to sew! You are a great teacher and I make a lot of king size pillowcases that you showed me. They also make great gifts. Thank you never stop doing this please
What a fantastic idea my daughter just came back from America and brought me Hershey s hugs and kisses chocolates for a present now I can make a pouch with the bags love your tutorials. Paulene from Perth Western Australia
Hello Paulene! We can't wait to see your cookies and cream creation! Feel free to share with us on our Missouri Star Facebook and Instagram using #msqcshowandtell! :)
I have 15 grandchildren and this is going to make a cute Christmas present for them. I did see your first tutorial on this but this updated one is much more detailed. Thank you Jenny for another awesome tutorial. I have only been quilting for 3 years and I have learned so much by watching you. Thank you!
Thanks Jenny! Having directions given complete and clear is how I learn best. I've followed you for many years and this is the second time watching this. Godspeed to you & yours.
jenny, love you; love your videos;little tip; when making tabs for zipper ends, when u iron them, leave the one end a little bigger for the bottom; this way you will catch the bottom when you sew the tabs.
“Empty the bag any way you want. No judging!” Haha. DOVE chocolate, a staple in our home. :) LOVE this idea!!! Thank you for sharing, Jenny; you’re an awesome educator!
I’ve actually have used this iron on vinyl and it is magnificent!!! I’ve made bags out of place mats and I used this vinyl for the inside so you can wipe it out and it’s wonderful!!!
Hi Jenny, I have done these using clear Contact paper but I think I like the Iron On Vinyl better because no sewing through the sticky back of the Contact. Such a super idea! Love your patient teaching style...makes it "sew" easy!
There are a lot of tutorials for this bag, but yours is by far the best! Thank you. I bought 5 bags of different candy, so I could make these. I'll try really hard not to fight with my dear husband, over the contents of the bags! Ha!
Jenny I Have tried several different candy bag tutorials. Never like the way the zippers look. finally tried your tutorial. I thought the zipper was going to give me a problem, but gave it a shot. The bag turned out great. I am going to stick to your way. Should of started with your since I have been a fan of all your quilting tutorial. Thank you for all you do for the quilters. Big hugs from Bradenton, Fl.
Thank you so much for the best Valentine Idea I have seen. My granddaughter will absolutely love it. I also have a dear friend who has two granddaughters as well. Keep the great ideas coming. Love Live Love your channel. ❤❤
I made a Tootsie Roll pouch for my husband, since that is his favorite candy. It was very easy to make and is a great conversation piece. Thanks, Jenny, for another fun tutorial.
My husband loves Raisinets. I made him the large bag to keep in his truck for cords for electronics. It's bright yellow & easy to find when he has all his hunting gear in the truck.
Your tutorials are so much fun. Especially when they involve calories. I think I will make one for each of my Grandchildren. 11 bags of candy here I come! LOL
This is amazing to me!! I just started quilting i think these are perfect for my granddaughters and sisters..and myself who is candy fanatic!! Jenny you are so AWESOME!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING ALL YOUR QUILTING TUTORIALS
Traveling soon and going to place Candy bag -zipper down in my purse; To stow singles (tip money)and help camouflage. When traveling to All-inclusive resorts you need lots of bulky singles, currently use paper envelopes, kinda' obvious...Another great tutorial!
Jenny, you are hysterical...I love the tutorials and you have challenged me to sew again. MSQC has quilted several of my tops in the last month or so!! Keep up the great work.
I so much love watching the tutorial, I called looking for the pattern, then I ordered the 2015 back issue of BLOCK, but it's makes more sense to me when I can see you make it. Thanks again for remaking it.
Zipper's are not my Strong point, But Jenny, You done it again, made something Hard... SO EZ to do. Made this candy bag for grand daughter with her fav candy.. And she totally LOVEs It.. Took the suggestion of putting the candy back into the bag when I was done and then gave it to her, She loved her candy treat and love's her new little pocket purse. THANKS AGAIN JENNY for another GREAT and Fun Useful project. (also great way to recycle)
Wow most times when I watch a sewing tutorial, Im not learning much in the way of doing things but watching you work has taught me alot! Great Video! and i love the idea of the candy bag!
I just made one for my mother with the Caramel M&M’s for her sunglasses. The case she currently uses has an end where you have to pinch to open it to get sunglasses out. Hard for her with rheumatoid artists- she loves it!!! Thank you again - you made her so happy!
Love it. I know my little nieces will want them. I went right out and bought the fusible vinyl . I did not know such a thing existed. Will give something to do during the Delaware heat wave this week. No gardening this week.
I think the candy industry is going to be loving this tutorial as it will probably increase sales-lol. Goof thing I have some Dove chocolates in my fridge.
Still smells like chocolate! Yes, must make one. I always attribute making mistakes to someone not holding their mouth right ...integral part of all instructions! Thank you Jenny, so fun!
My grandma always said "You gotta hold yer tongue right if ya want it to work right." Words of wisdom from the Greatest Generation!! I guess you and Jenny agree with that
I love watching your videos because you give step by step instructions and it’s so easy for a beginner like me to learn how to do it. Thank you so much 😊
Oopsie. Your thread came out of the thread guide above the needle. Happens to me a lot. This is the BEST tutorial I've seen on making these little bags. Thanks!
You always bring a smile to my face Jenny. Although I don't buy sweets ('cos I would eat them !), I will seriously consider purchasing some so I can make this cute pouch. I hope I can purchase the iron on vinyl in Australia. Thanks so much for making my day a fun day.
Hi Jenny: I showed this to my youngest grand-daughter and she loved it. She went and bought 3 different kinds of candy, guess what I get to do LOL. Ty for this video we loved it..
Unfortunately, I’ve found out-the hard way-that some chip bags have been changed and fall apart when you’re trying to turn them-I tried it twice with the Sam results both times. 😢😢
Since I don't buy gift bags am always looking for a creative way of recycling other items - cigar boxes hold gifts, etc. The large chip bags from Costco will be perfect for larger gits! Thank you!
I’ve made a Cheeto bag for our son to send to a friend in Russia! I’ve seen the dill pickle chips. I’ve been saving all kinds of bags, including dog and cat treat bags!
A lady @ my church makes the best chocolate chip cookies!!! I made her the large Nestle's Chocolate Chip bag with the recipe on the back. Can't wait to give it to her!
I watched this tut last night. Today I'm buying candy just for the bag. Tip, I thought I would be clever and press the candy bag before I applied the vinyl. Don't do it! It rolled up so tight, I had to tape it down with painter's tape just to apply the vinyl. That worked fine, then I applied the vinyl. This project is the cutest thing and I'm seeing myself making lots of these for my friends, coworkers and family! There are so many items that come in these plastic bags. I work with a girl from Jamaica , she loves Jasmine rice, I will make her a jasmine rice zip bag.
Jenny, you’ve been my mentor since I became a quilter a few years ago, and until now - I’ve agreed with your “easy peasy” on most all the projects I’ve done with you. In the case of the candy bag pouch, I was unprepared for how hard it was for me. My machine had trouble navigating across the vinyl for quilting - needle kept getting stuck, stitches becoming smaller and smaller until the needle would no longer move. I completed the bag by jerry-rigging right and left - increasing my stitch length and manually moving the material. Also, the vinyl initially slid around a bit; putting a pin through the layers didn’t work - used clips but still had trouble. Also, I used a smaller candy bag the the one you used, and I think that was a mistake - made everything much harder as the small bag was less forgiving, very hard to turn. I hope the account of my travails helps someone else not make my mistakes.
Yeah, she probably should have mentioned that if you don't have a Teflon/Non-stick sewing machine foot, then put some masking tape on your regular foot and it will slide easier across the vinyl (after making a hole for you needle to go thru of course).
These candy bags are a huge hit! The year I saw this in your Block magazine I made about 30 of these for Grandchildren and friends using their favorite candies. They are still in high demand. I'd like to suggest when you are giving a tutorial for quilts, pouches, runners, etc. you let us know if they are in a Block mag. and which one. I spend a lot of time researching where I saw that in print since I have so many of your Blocks. That way I can use the printed info along with watching the video when creating. Thanks, Jenny and Friends!
Onalee Sutherland .I found it for you in a Block from 2015 labeled Late Summer volume 2 issue 4. It is pinkish in color with a white rocking chair on the cover. Also, if you have a Walmart near you, I find the vinyl by yard there works great? You don't happen to love in Texas do you?
Hi Jean ~ How very nice of you to take the time to reply, thank-you ever so much! Only have visited Texas, I lived in Colorado for 35 years, moved to desert SW...too hot! Now back to the Rocky Mountains, however now in Idaho!
Cannot wait to make for my family for Christmas! And of course I''ll have to serve the family by eating the candy in order to have the bags to recycle in this manner. Oh, this is going to be fun!!!!!
Well, I don't know HOW I missed this video last summer!!! But I'm so glad I found it now. These are adorable little bags. I will never tire of watching your tutorials. :o)
Love your videos! Will be making this soon as I go get some M & M's and get the bag! LOL. Thank you Jenny for such wonderful lessons...You are a great teacher!
Thank you for this fun idea. The possibilities are endless!! I have a freezer full of bags of chocolate chips for Christmas cookies. Imagine yellow chocolate chip bags as Christmas gifts. Maybe a baggie of mini-homemade cookies inside, so it won’t be a crummy mess. Thank you for sharing this cute idea. My grand babies are going to get candy bag pencil cases as stocking stuffers, too.
Well off to the shop for me to get some sweets !! Then I guess to the fabric store for some of the vinyl !!! Looks like I will be eating "junk" food for a bit as I think my grandkids will like these !!! Any excuse !! Thanks for another fun video Jenny
Thank you Jenny. I have fallen in love with these bags. I've made 10 so far. How do i send u a picture of my bags? Love for u to see them. Thanks again. Love all your projects.
We are so glad to hear that! You can send pictures for your projects under any of our posts on Facebook, or by clicking on this link below. We can't wait to see pictures! missouriquiltcohelp.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Jenny, you do such an amazing job of explaining things. I really appreciate it!

I don't care if both sides of mine are the same, but will buy two bags so I can enjoy them while I sew. lol

@@MarenM4085 OMG How funny!!! Great gift idea!!
That's what my middle daughter wants. She's 50 for heaven sake!
This little bag is adorable. I think little kids would love to put their pencils inside of this Bag
I've been saving our chicken feed bags to "make something." Now I know what to make! Thank you.
One of the best videos I've seen for making these candy bags!
A lady @ my church makes the best chocolate chip cookies!!! I made her the large Nestle's Chocolate Chip bag with the recipe on the back. Can't wait to give it to her!
Great video, I would use the vinyl on the inside too, so you can wipe it clean.
No more zipper fear. Thanks for showing us. I’ve wanted to do these for years and now I think I can!

Thank you, Peggy, for taking the time to offer a helpful suggestion. We Peggys need to stick together, teflon or no .
Jean B great idea!!!
Hi Jean B, which Block Magazine had the instructions? I too wish that it were easier to find patterns in the magazine.
Onalee Sutherland Di you have that Block? if not I can probably take photos of the pattern and text them to you. Let me know.
This is such a cute and quick idea, great for gifts for younger relatives.
Cannot wait to make for my family for Christmas! And of course I''ll have to serve the family by eating the candy in order to have the bags to recycle in this manner. Oh, this is going to be fun!!!!!
Jenny, love this video! Kids would go nuts over bags like this!
This is the best tutorial I've seen for this so far . Thanks!
Well, I don't know HOW I missed this video last summer!!! But I'm so glad I found it now. These are adorable little bags. I will never tire of watching your tutorials. :o)
