It seems like tragedy is often what flips the Targaryens. It's what flipped Rhaenyra, and it might be what gets Daenerys, I wonder what Aerys' tragedy was. What did he lose? His family was all still alive at the start of the war.

Aerys had been kidnapped and held for ransom for months. His family before his wife and children died in a fire. His wife suffered MANY miscarriages and stillbirths. His friendship with Tywin fell apart partly due to Johanna choosing Tywin over Aerys. He became paranoid and distrusted his son Rhagar. It's A LOT. The books discuss it.
