  • Numbers 30-31, from our study, 04 Numbers - 2013, with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Albuquerque.
    MESSAGE SUMMARY
Numbers 30-31 can be summed up in three words: vows, vengeance, and victory. In these chapters, God gives the children of Israel a set of regulations for vows, they war against the Midianites, and the Lord gives them victory. As we apply the text to our lives, we learn that our word is sacred, vengeance is the Lord's business, and God gives victory to those who are obedient.

The vows of a girl to God while living in her father's or husband's house could be revoked by each only on the day she let them know of them. It was a common practice among Israeli girls in hope to be the mother of the messiah!
Joseph honored Mary's vows, that is why he decided to leave her quietly wh en he learned of her pregnancy. He never doubted her virtue....
The bible does not mentioned it expressly because it was a common practice in israel

Love your sermons, but here is my comment on Jepthat's vow. I can't say that his vow was foolish. He was in the Spirit when he said it and I I don't think he sacrificed his daughter. There are Jewish commentaries about the conjunction "vav" use which is translated as "and" which can also mean "or" which makes better sense and I do not think will accept human sacrifice since that is against His nature and altar is only made for animals. Just my two cents.

R Siao it’s a common theme in the book of Judges that the Lord’s spirit would come upon a Judge. God would do this to empower the judge to ultimately save the Jewish people. I say that to say just because the someone is in the Spirit doesn’t mean that God approves of all their actions. Spiritual actions doesn’t always mean spiritual approval of God. Most Biblical scholars agree on that point.

What a tribute to the Lord. There was 16,750 talents of gold put before the Lord. Taking around 100 pounds per talent (some say a talent was 130 pounds) and multiplying it by 16750 gives you 1.6 + million pounds of gold that was put before the Lord. That's hard to imagine; but I'm sure the captains noted clearly that the Lord blessed the army as not one person was killed. Still, that's a lot of gold.

Woman marriage vows are important then and now, in my humble opinion.

This Pastor does not teach or believe in the permanence of marriage? Like so many modern theologians and teachers believe today, marriage is conditional? Marriage vows are until death (1st Corinthians 7:39 & Romans 7:1-4) no amount of hyper grace or spiritualization of scripture will remove one jot or title of scripture! Blessings to you!

Why couldn’t women in the Bible do vows independently without asking their husband’s or father’s permission? Because the men didn’t need to ask permission.

Thank you Pastor Skip really enjoying these teaching. On thing though, when we get married we all believe it is until death us do part, however despite what you said there are extenuating circumstances. My husband walked out on me, we divorced and he remarried, what exactly was I supposed to do? He walked out, he remarried! I did not want the end of the marriage! My daughter was beaten by a violent husband, he didn't stop at mt daughter but also abused the little girl,, should she stay married? I think Skip a little more life experience and compassion might just be in order here!
