Recalling the 2001 finals Ivanisevic once said that he would have shot himself if he´d lost again - typically Goran. ;) It´s one of the most emotional and most deserved title wins in Wimbledon history, for sure. After Sampras Ivanisevic was arguably the most dominant player at Wimbledon in the 90´s and it would have been odd if he would never have won the title. The only drawback of the 2001 title match was that Patrick Rafter was denied a Wimbledon title once again after he lost to Sampras in 2000. He himself would have well deserved a Wimbledon crown as he was a great sportsman and personality.
I always get happy and sad thinking about this match because Goran win was sort of like an unofficial end to the Sampras generation, many of these players wouldn't dominate the sport anymore. Sampras would retire in couple of years and the way game was being played changed dramatically, becoming a hard baseline rally. It was only fitting that the last great serve volley player other than Sampras won Wimbledon a final goodbye to the Serve Volley Tennis.

For me probably the most emotional as I a grown man have ever been over sport. The elation and just pure joy I had for this man winning I have not experienced before or since in sport. Possibly Agassi 99 Paris but this was so outlandishly surreal and the tension palpable it was everything sport should be!
I never saw this match unfortunately, though Federer winning Wimbledon in 2012 after almost every single commentator and tennis fan had said he would never win another slam after Nadal's dominance in 2010 and Djoker's in 2011 made me cry
I was so happy when Goran won, I remember following the score on the internet at work, so much stress. Gotta feel sorry for Rafter, such a classy player, good thing he got 2 US Open, he deserved more slams.
I never knew Goran's story. It's heartbraking indeed! I am from Germany and congratulate him for this fantastic achievement after so many attempts. Well done, well deserved!
Rafters lost to Sampras the year before soo he himself knew how hard it was to lose the Wimbledon final, showing respect to a man that was way to close way too many times
0:16 so sweet of Goran to console the baffled winner even after he lost the championship himself.👏👏 also sweet of Raftor to truly understand Goran’s desperation of that win. That friendly hair ruffle😀
Every year I have to watch this video , relive old memories and tell myself why Goran is my favourite player in the late 90s and why Wimbledon is the greatest tennis tournament.
Goran Ivanisevic was my first Wimbledon Champion 🏆 that's 2001 since when I started following the Championships. Was completely smitten by his innocent face let alone him winning despite some bigger names like Roddick, Rafter, Safin, Henman, Hewitt, Moya in the circuit, with the Grand Slam to be dominated by Federer in upcoming years. Will remember this for long, thanks for providing a recap 👍
I cried when he won. Goran was no slouch : 22 titles and 27 second places. Many would settle with half of that for their careers. Najjača faca tenisa svih vremena!

This is still my favourite wimbledon of all time. I am from Australia and rafter beat agassi in the semi-final which is my favourite match of all time back then agassi was considered unbeatable. To then get to the final and lose an epic to ivanisevic was heartbreaking but I still have so much nostalgia for this time.
I thought pat had already shown he could trouble andre a few times. And ivanisevic was in arguably better form that event. If it had been pat from his 2000 form I think he would be too much.
Even though I may not have seen it live, this is one of my favourite matches of all time. This is one of the things that makes sport a test of character - the fallen great coming back as an underdog
I love Goran and I am so happy that he finally won Wimbledon. So deserved. That is not to say that Rafter did not also deserve to win this tournament... I wish he also did. Both were class acts.

The best moment in tennis HISTORY....I CRIED with my father , SO HAPPY FOR GORAN....
This is the most deserved grand slam win in history
Roddick for me if he had won it 😞
The best servers of all times. And what a journey. Mental strength. People could connect with his emotions thru those losing finals and finally making it.
My favorite!
Ivo Karlović(also from Croatia) is beser
What a player, what a good man ... two gentlemen with big hearts! I Love them both...
👍🙋
I keep going to this video... Reminds me of grit, desire, hunger, and epitome of human feelings. I saw this match live and still remember jumping around when he won.
I always loved his big aces.
@@danmeadowsmusic Good choice. Monumental 2012 win
Goran was always my favorite player. He added so much personality to tennis. I always pretended I was him when I played
I was so happy when Goran won, I remember following the score on the internet at work, so much stress. Gotta feel sorry for Rafter, such a classy player, good thing he got 2 US Open, he deserved more slams.
How time flies - back then, Goran was a Wimbledon champ. Now, he's sitting in Novak Djokovic's box
I never knew Goran's story. It's heartbraking indeed! I am from Germany and congratulate him for this fantastic achievement after so many attempts. Well done, well deserved!
Goran had the most beautiful and genuine smile among all the tennis players I am aware of
Loved Goran ,was the best final of all., time well deserved.
Watching him coach Raonic this week and he was just doing kick ups for 10mins for the fans. Hero
That was the most happy grandslam final loser i have ever seen...
No. That is a man with class who is showing respect and composure. Outstanding guy Rafter.
Rafters lost to Sampras the year before soo he himself knew how hard it was to lose the Wimbledon final, showing respect to a man that was way to close way too many times
He knew he'd be hailed more for being the loser rather than a winner against Ivanisevic
@@-music2023 so sad he lost that one
😂👍👏👏👏
I danas se naježin i suze krenu od sreće ka da san ja osvojila 🙏❤️🌞
Best tennis story ever, this is for movie
0:16 so sweet of Goran to console the baffled winner even after he lost the championship himself.👏👏 also sweet of Raftor to truly understand Goran’s desperation of that win. That friendly hair ruffle😀
Best Wimbledon story to this day.
One of the greatest moments in tennis history
Every year I have to watch this video , relive old memories and tell myself why Goran is my favourite player in the late 90s and why Wimbledon is the greatest tennis tournament.
Never give up!Goran was a great champion
Goran was an absolute joy to watch, nothing can ever take that from him.
Most emotional final ever
this is one of the most remarkable stories... extraordinary coz he is always the crowd favourite...
My favourite player ever. The one that made my generation fall in love with the game
Ivanesevic win was so so special. Always wanted him to lift the Wimbledon trophy n finally it came as a wild card entry. U r an inspiration Goran
In a few words...simply heartbreaking ❤️ Thanks God for giving us Goran🙏
Goran Ivanisevic was my first Wimbledon Champion 🏆 that's 2001 since when I started following the Championships. Was completely smitten by his innocent face let alone him winning despite some bigger names like Roddick, Rafter, Safin, Henman, Hewitt, Moya in the circuit, with the Grand Slam to be dominated by Federer in upcoming years. Will remember this for long, thanks for providing a recap 👍
He will always be one of my favorite players, and this match the best I have ever seen.
A day that I will absolutely never forget. Celebrating with my father throughout the house
I cried when he won.
Goran was no slouch : 22 titles and 27 second places.
Many would settle with half of that for their careers.
Najjača faca tenisa svih vremena!
+ 9 in pairs + 2 olympic medals
He was stellar. Beast!
What a phenomenal wildcard winner! Trip down memory lane
i have watched all his finals , man i was so glad that he finally won it :)
I remember watching this match live back then....as a teenager me and my brother loved Goran, damn we were so nervous as fans .... but the victory bought us joy and we were overjoyed ❤ Goran love from India 🇮🇳
When I watch this I always get anxious about those double faults even though I know the outcome. Goosebumps all over the place.
Back then when i was a young, wide-eyed university student, without the weight of the world on my shoulders. I wasnt at Wimbledon that day, but i skipped uni lectures that Monday afternoon, and sat in a pub near the uni, getting pissed, drinking pints all afternoon, watching it. That was a very goooood day. I had been a huge fan of both, but i was rooting for Goran. It's etched in my brain like it was yesterday. Oh the memories!! :)
He was very well liked with the British crowd, a great character
Oh man, that crowd, amazing
Losing every final before and then the victory in one of his last matches with a wild card... that was awesome!
I remember watching that final live on TV with the match ending midnight IST... So happy Ivanisevic could win the Wimbledon finally.... ❤️😍
That Wimbledon and especially that final was how my dad and I bonded for the first time, we love an underdog story! Thanks Goran
Even though I may not have seen it live, this is one of my favourite matches of all time.
This is one of the things that makes sport a test of character - the fallen great coming back as an underdog
Thanx for sharing this good memories. What great characters played on court back in the days...
I was 16, when I saw the live telecast.. Still remember his celebrations.. What a player.. He deserved it 🏆
Was overjoyed for Goran at that time.. gosh it's been more than 20 years now and still gives the chills.
I love Goran and I am so happy that he finally won Wimbledon. So deserved. That is not to say that Rafter did not also deserve to win this tournament... I wish he also did. Both were class acts.
I was watching the the final match live. Ivanisevic's victory was one of the greatest moments in sports history. To be an underdog and to win against all odds is a demonstration of pure spirit.
That crazy Goran! I remember watching him get to the champion match. What a journey, lol, taking off his shirt, throwing his racket down. I was so glad he won!
Federer can win Wimbledon 500 times and nothing will ever match Goran's win in 2001. It will never happen again. This is the most beautiful story in all of sports, not just tennis.
Most beautiful story in sports is Leicester City winning premiere league. After that every other story comes.
Oh my god! Really? Was it like few days ago as Djoković winning ??
20 years later, he is the coach of the best tennis player in history
Not possible, he's from Croatia
I wouldn't say the best player in the history but anyway
@@davidmorega5407 anyway is best, the results and numbers say so
This is a lie. He isn’t Serena Williams’ coach. 😁
@@davidmorega5407 Yes, Nole is the best tennis player in the history of tennis, if he manages to win a gold slam in this 2021 plus if he wins a gold medal at the Olympics then Djokovic will be one of the best athletes ever
I remember watching these matches as a 14 year old, never been more happier for someone else to see them complete a circle of life in a way, still well deserved and on of the most remarkable runs in sports history
I remember watching this final. So happy he finally won! And to think he did it as a 'washed up' wildcard makes it all the more sweeter.
