  • I'm a digital artist and I do art commissions as a hobby. One day, "Jason" on Instagram sent me a DM about his interest in commissioning me. This is the story about how I almost got scammed out of $600.
I will be identifying some red flags as we go along our Instagram conversation. And the ultimate goal is to raise awareness and to help other digital artists out there.
A common tactic that scammers do is guilt-tripping you until you open-up and reveal sensitive information (like "Jason" does at the end of our conversation) whilst taking advantage of the victim's stress and panic. Otherwise, they may even resort to doing verbal threats.
It's terrifying to think that, if this scammer had produced and showcased more convincing emails and more personalized pictures, then this could have gone a different way. 😬
I have reported the individual on Instagram with the hopes that they won't be able to target vulnerable artists in the future.
Stay safe out there artists, and be cyberspace smart! 🤓💪
