I hope I'm telling ths history story correctly, but it is something like this at worst:
When Mulholland was constructing the Southern California irrigation system, he had to deal with gneiss along the way and they posed some complex issues. Once he was presenting the project issues to a higher up official and at the end the guy who wa not familiar with geology said to him, "I don't understand what the issue is if you think all the geology is so nice here"

Not everywhere. I have checked the pronunciation in the past and have found it to sound like "nice". I have also heard it pronounced with a "g"
