Hello. Thanks for the great guidance you three provided. I am Master in Chemistry. I have been working in a Brazilian petrochemical company in the period of 2012-2020. I would like to apply to a PhD program in Germany. I have a structured project to develop catalysts aiming to convert CO2 in other valued chemicals. Hope to see you soon in Germany. But, how is it working though pandemic restrictions? Thanks. Kind regards.

Thank you for your interest in doing your Postdoc in Germany.
Germany offers international postdocs a wide range of opportunities to continue their research - in universities, in non-university research institutions and in industry. These institutes offer research jobs or grants to support young postdoctoral researchers.
There are several funding programmes for international Postdocs. On our website you find information about your funding opportunities:
      - a selection of funding programmes for international researchers: www.research-in-germany.org/funding-programmes (please select 'Junior Researchers & Postdocs')
      - a list of funding databases:
      www.research-in-germany.org/en/research-funding/funding-databases.html
      - an overview of German funding organisations:
      www.research-in-germany.org/en/research-funding/funding-organisations.html
More information about finding a research job as a postdoc can be found on our website:
      www.research-in-germany.org/postdoc-career
When you are looking for a supervisor you can start your search by looking for a good university with the right fit for your research focus. Here are some useful links and databases:
      - The CHE University Ranking enables you to search for universities by subject or by city:
      www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/ranking/en/
      - The 'Research Map' offered by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) allows you to search for German universities where your field of interest is available: www.hrk.de/activities/research-map-key-research-priorities
      - 'GERiT - German Research Institutions' is a database containing over 25,000 research institutes in Germany. It includes information on institutes and departments at German universities, as well as research institutions and organisations working outside the university sector: www.gerit.org/en/
Once you’ve identified a potential supervisor you need to apply directly to the professor in question. When applying you should provide details about your previous academic achievements and the topic of your PhD/doctoral thesis. Your application can include a well-considered proposal for your future work.

      Dear Sooraj Rana,
Thank you for contacting us. We are happy to provide you with some information about doing a PhD in Germany!
Before you get started, it is important to know that in Germany there are two ways you can earn your PhD, the Individual Doctorate or the Structured Doctorate:
      1. The 'Individual Doctorate': This type of doctorate means you write your thesis or dissertation under the supervision of a professor.
      2. The 'Structured Doctorate': Structured doctoral programmes are similar to PhD programmes in English-speaking countries where a team of supervisors look after a group of doctoral students.
If you wish to do an individual PhD (doctorate) then you need to apply directly to the university or research institution you are interested in. The following links will help you with your search:
      - PhDGermany database: www.phdgermany.de
There you can find current openings for PhD students in Germany.
Find more information about the 'Individual doctorate' model and tips where to search for open PhD positions: www.research-in-germany.org/phd-individual
If you are looking for a structured PhD programme, then the followings links are a good place to start:
      - International Programme Database of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): This database offers over 300 PhD programmes. Most programmes are held in English and have no tuition fees: www.daad.de/idp
      - Find out more information about the 'Structured doctorate' model and tips how to apply for a PhD position: www.research-in-germany.org/phd-structural

      Dear Yuvaraj,
Thank you for your interest in doing a PhD in Germany.
There are three basic approaches for finding a PhD position or programme. You can:
      1. Apply for a structured PhD programme:
For structured PhD programmes see the DAAD International Programmes Database at www.daad.de/idp. It contains international PhD programmes that are very similar to the PhD programmes in English-speaking countries where a team of supervisors look after a group of doctoral students. Nearly all of the programmes are taught in English and have no tuition fees. There are currently 1 PhD programme related to your field of research: www2.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/international-programmes/en/result/?q=total%20synthesis&fos=&cert=&admReq=&scholarshipLC=&scholarshipSC=°ree%5B%5D=3&langDeAvailable=&langEnAvailable=&lang%5B%5D=&cit%5B%5D=&tyi%5B%5D=&ins%5B%5D=&dur%5B%5D=&prep_subj%5B%5D=&prep_degree%5B%5D=&sort=4&subjects%5B%5D=&limit=10&offset=&display=list&fee=&bgn%5B%5D=
You can search by inserting keywords (e.g. total synthesis) and/or by field of study.
      2. Search for PhD job offers at German universities:
See www.phdgermany.de for open PhD positions at German universities and Graduate Schools specifically for international applicants.
      3. Send a speculative application to a professor or research institute:
      - If you intend to apply directly to an institute, you can search for workgroups where research in your field of interest is carried out in the online database 'Research Explorer':
      www.gerit.org/en/
      - The CHE University Ranking also enables you to search for universities by subject or by city: www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/ranking/en/
      - The online database 'Higher Education Compass' allows you to search specific research fields and find institutes you can apply to if you wish to earn a PhD:
      www.hochschulkompass.de/en/doctoral-studies/doctorate-search.html
If you are looking for scholarships, please take a look at our website:
      www.research-in-germany.org/funding-phd
Follow us on Twitter (registration is optional) for regular updates on new PhD positions:
      twitter.com/ResearchGermany
Good luck with your search and we look forward to welcoming you to Germany!

Speaking fluent German is certainly useful for everyday life, but it's not always necessary if you wish to earn a PhD.
Many structured PhD programmes are taught only in English and often you do not have to write your doctoral thesis in German. Find out in the respective doctoral regulations which languages can be used to write your thesis.
If you are looking for PhD programmes, you can check out this online database: www.daad.de/idp. It provides detailed information about the requirements for each programme.
For information and advice on learning German, check out this website www.study-in.de/en/discover-germany/german-language/german-language_41118.php
We hope this information proves helpful.
