    Pog letting Jonas get the stage win would have been disrespectful to Jonas. Jonas does not need hand outs, he is an incredible rider who has won the tour twice and smashed Pog on stages in the past. Gifting him the win is silly, Pog knows that and so does Jonas. Two amazing competitors, fantastic tour!

      Great point! Handouts are just as disrespectful and Jonas was sweating bullets. He had a great comeback from injuries and a great record, but Pog is peaking now. And when he explained how much recon his team had been traing for, Pog didnt need to explain nothing more, they executed their training perfectly and for that he deserves every bit of celebration!

    Today Pogačar gave the breakaway a chance to win, but Remco's team reeled the breakaway back in. Remco and Jonas's battle basically put the stage in Pogačar's lap. Pogacar's job is to win. His team pays him big money to win. So he won. Get over it!

    • @8rk
      @8rk Месяц назад +2

      While I lean more towards this opinion, one thing I think worth considering is that sometimes, guys who he's taking wins away from are domestiques who gave every drop of energy to their team leader. When you're racing vs Jonas, like Stage 20, sure. Take the win. But on Stage 19, you're fighting vs a domestique who obliterated himself for Jonas for 2.5 weeks while you spend most of the race surfing wheels. Also he's ridden the whole race in the front. It's not a truly equal fight. I'm not saying Tadej wouldn't win vs Matteo in normal circumstances BUT offering just a different perspective.

    • @TrykusMykus
      @TrykusMykus Месяц назад +15

      @@8rk It doesn't matter if he's fighting against domestiques or not. He wanted to win his home stage so he went for it. He also made the stage interesting... Do you really want him to lose 1:40, because he shouldn't attack domestiques? Also, if he doesn't attack domestiques and the domestiques come back as satellites to help Jonas on the climb, is that dishonorable too?
      Making all these stupid rules just leads to more confusion. The goal is to win the stages AND the race. If Pogacar went for the mountain classification, I would not be mad either - it would put him at risk of being attacked AND would make the race interesting.

      Why do you guys evade talking about BINI? Are you embarrassed to see Europeans lose to an Eritrean lion in an exceptional manner? Can you imagine, there is only one African in the whole peloton and he is from Eritrea - the pearl of Africa known for its resilience, determination, dexterity and doing the impossible in an exceptional manner. Do you know, Eritrea is the only African nation that snatched from the jaws of two super-powers: US & USSR in 1991 after the US & UK assigned Ethiopia in 1962 as their guardian maid since Eritrea was very vital for the geopolitical interest of both the US & UK after the world war II. For your information, this is what former U.S. Secretary of State & Special Advisory to President Harry S. Nevertheless, as resilience and determination are our traits, here we prove to the athletic/cycling world in an exceptional manner. General public : there was speculation in the TdF 2022 that Jonas gifted a TT to WVA, so it does happen, although Wout was a teammate. Thanks to another commentator for the correction 💯

    Last year, everyone was cheering on JV and Visma. It was brutal for Pogi. This year, Pogi and UAE came prepared - redemption! This is professional sport! Next year, JV and Visma can try to redeem next year. Cheers to Pogi, Jonas, and Remco for their grit and being such great competitors!

    Title like that, if this would not be youtube, would suggest that a considerable part of the Pog fans find their idol disrespectful. I am sure the vast majority of Pog fans don't think so. And who cares what the rival fans think, no one should, go and do charity events instead. Pogacar does not have to give anything away. Doing so would be disrespectful. This is the tour de France. Now if you talk about Armstrong and Hincapie, they were just sore losers and belong in the category what the rival fans think. Sure Johan put them straight.

    @ 5:45 The analogy for Messi would be: if he scores a hat trick and keeps on pushing to humiliate the other team.
    Which he actually did in a famous match against Real Madrid, ending up scoring five goals…

    Putting aside the obvious questions related to doping they are racers that race each other -- the idea that Tadej should have said 'after you' to Jonas is laughable. Yes, at various points a leader in a jersey is generally not challenged for points or sprint at intermediate points, but when it comes to the finish line there are no friends. Would or should Michael Schumacher have allowed Damon Hill to pass him and win the race if the championship was already locked up? Answer = NO!

    Pog needs to get as many stage wins as possible, the record number of wins needs to be in the hands of a rider that wins the tour, not a sprinter.

    It's teams' responsibility to win stages- not Pog's responsibility to let them. It is called "racing."
    There is also a safety concern for "no radios." Road info can be difficult to communicate otherwise sometimes.

    The discussion on giving away stage wins is completely ludicrous! This is a sport, you train and make huge sacrifices in order to become as good as you can. It's not up to the dominant athlete to make the field more even, it's up to the rest to become better. And, - it's a team sport, remember! The wins are for the team, not just for Tadej.
    Jordan should have missed more shots on purpose? Bolt should have ran slower? To be nice? Such a silly discussion.

    Couldn't agree more about the radios...racers need to race without being caoched through the race, and like he said, it can make for dangerous scenarios for fighting for position through certain sections. It should award racers who did the work to remember when to be up front.

    Hello all, great podcast, some sports (I believe American football) only allow one player/athlete to have radio communication rather than the whole team. This could be a good middle ground between having unbridled radio access to the entire peloton and no radios at all. Team leaders could relay important info to the team car but not all riders would be constantly tuned-in; perhaps keeping most of the benefits of radio while increasing unpredictability etc… Just a though.

    We can be only glad, that we have persone like Tadej. He is super competitive and that is true mindset of winer. He is not state social care, he is there to win. If you are bad, than start training more, if you can't be better in cycling after more professional training ...change sport.

    Toff, Tadej is a winner and a fan favourite. There shouldn't be gifts it is professional sport. If you are in a day long breakaway and one is getting the jersey at the end, sure they can agree to not sprint for the finish to get help to gain time. But you absolutely don't gift a stage to your rival.

    Loved the nuanced take on the sticky bottles

  • @mintymilkk
    @mintymilkk Месяц назад +1

    The argument around sticky bottles has nothing to do with how much it's being abused. The problem is that it means anyone off the back can effectively get a temporary e-bike to get back in the peleton. If we want that "rubber banding" in the sport then sure, but I think a lot of people would rather not have that. It cheapens/trivialises the challenge of completing the tour

  • @jessejulian3875

    It would be “throwing the game” for a competitor to let someone else win in a circumstance where he./she were the stronger person. In a sports competition you must win (fairly) every time you can. That concept makes the win special for all participants.

    If I was Pog’a PR manager, I might have advised him that gifting Jonas the win might have won him more fans than a 5th win. Considering this was the most that Tadej has ever looked like Chris Froome in a victory- having ridden so defensively on that climb, a magnanimous gesture could have been epic.
    …however it’s only epic because it cannot be expected. And having suffered 2 years of being 2nd best, I won’t deny the guy his dominance.

  • @cbacbacba09

    I find it unfair people say Tadej didn't keep his promise. Tadej didn't attack, he defended against Vingegard. It was Jonas who ate up all the attackers. Tadej only attacked for the stage win after Vingegard lead him to second position in the race.

    Personally, I think he's respectful enough and an amazing talent. Yes, in the past there were many unwritten rules and respect among each other, and all of the other criticisms against Pog but he did say he wasnt trying to obliterate the competition while riding smart and not blowing up. At the end of the previous stage he laid his cards on the table and said he was going to take it easy but its bike racing and when other teams start to play with the tactics you have to go and stay with it. Today, he saw 2nd place was starting to crack and since he felt amazing he leveled the stage in dramatic fashion. I LOVED IT! Maybe a little arrogant to some, but i feel he's a humble and likable guy who's just the best. He blows himself up and is hardly breathing at the end, rides the warm down hardly sweating and keeping up with social media. As much as I prefer old school rules, this is 2024 and this guy is just that amazing, so let him win as much as he wants, there's always a gamble in it...and it makes the other teams have to attack more. That makes for exciting racing.
