Monish Rai (Ashok Kumar) comes from a wealthy family, and is in love with Deviyani (Suchitra Sen), who is poor. Monish has to travel abroad to further his education in law, but promises to stay in touch with Deviyani. After his departure, financial problems overwhelm Deviyani and her father. She approaches Monish's mother for financial assistance, but is refused. In desperation, Deviyani's father marries her off to a much older man, Rakhal Bhattacharya, who has loaned money to Deviyani's father. Rakhal is also an alcoholic and frequents prostitutes.
Deviyani becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl, Suparna. Unhappy with her marriage and her circumstances, she runs away, and becomes a devadasi, or temple dancer, performing for a male clientele. She is however found by Rakhal, who blackmails her for money, and who attempts to kidnap Suparna on more than one occasion. Deviyani approaches Mother Mary, the Mother Superior of a convent and leaves Suparna in her care. Deviyani subsequently disappears. When Monish returns to the city, he thinks he has seen Deviyani, but is told by others that the person he has seen is a Lucknow-based prostitute, Pannabai.

Veteran actress (Suchitra Sen) portrays the double role both of Deviyani and Suparna.

Here, I have written "Rest in peace" means those legends are not with us anymore. And only singer Suman Kalyanpur ji is alive who's till now underrated and didn't get any respect, awards from Hindi film Industry. It's sad but true.

It is very disappointing that Suman Kalyanpur never got the recognition she deserved. In addition to great solos, she sang many excellent duets with Rafi Shahab and other great singers of the time. In one the of her interview she praised Rafi Shahab and said singing with Rafi Shahab is a cherished memory for her. Most singers who sang with Rafi Shabab said many good things about him except Asha Bhosle who hardly said any good things about Rafi Shahab.
What a lyrics penned by Majrooh sultanpuri ❤❤. And Rafi sahab ke baare me kya kehna.

YOU are 100 % accurate that Suman Kalyanpur was highly under rated by many by just omparing her with LATA MANGESHKAR , Forgetting many of her Awesomec solos like " MERE mehboob na ja , aaj ki raat na ja from Film Noor Mahal her initial " Alap " na jaaaaaa , naaaaaaa jaaaaaa, naaaaaaaaa ja - goes straight into one's heart with the agony that Suman Kalyanpur was able to impart in those three times repetition of the basic phrase of two words " na ja" in three different haunting ways!
Then several of her other sad solo songs like from film shagoon, " zindagi zulm sahi Jabr sahi gham hi sahi, dil ki faryad sahi , rooh ka ma'am hi sahi [ A song after listening to which Lata purportedly sought one of her favored Composer & his regular poet lyricist to come up.with one such song for bher to record!]
Another solo in the same film shagoon was also a very popular 1963 song - Bujha diye hain khud apne haaton , mhabbaton ke diye jalakar!
& a Duet from.same film Shagoon with RAFI - " Parbaton ke pedon par sham ka andhera hai , Surmayee Ujala hai , Champayee Andhera hai " was also very popular

Ironically...when the singers paid tribute to Lataji...they sang this song of Suman Kalyanpur who was ousted from the industry by the so called great lady
This duet version is by Suman Kalyanpur. But the original solo version has been sung by Lata only. It was the music directors who chose Lata over Suman. If Suman was better than Lata, then Lata's career would've been shadowed and not vice versa. As all Lata used to do (allegedly) was to say 'I won't sing anymore for you if you.' haathi chale bazar .... .... hazar

Ignorant people commenting below - this song is Duet of Rafi & Suman Kalyanpur, NOT THE LATAJI.
THE Lataji was not paired with Rafi as they were not at good terms during this time due to rafi not co-operating singers association about royalty demand.
Female version sung by Lataji is better than the duet one. How people couldn't differentiate these two voices.
