I don't think I knew what garlic really was when I was 3, but this always made me want it. To this day I make toast with peanut butter, and crush a clove of garlic on it, spread it around. And then I eat it, because of this short! 😅😅😅😂😂

    Wow this is where my cooking inspiration came from when I was so young. It all started from here. My mom used to make chicken soup like this, but then she decided to add a lot more vegetables, and blend it all into a smooth puree. And, instead of rice, she'd put in dumplings made of flour, eggs, butter, and salt.
    Now, I make a big batch, divide it into 8 containers, and freeze them for when we need comfort food, or are sick. It's packed with nutrients, and essentially pre-digested, so all you have to do is slurp it down.

    I like how in the beginning the mom said to the cashier that she's making soup while asking for chicken and rice because when I was in a market once a woman also said that she's making soup and needs some chicken where the cashier told the woman that she didn't have to tell him that she's making soup where all she had to do was say that she wants chicken, haha.

    • @afriendofbean
      @afriendofbean 6 лет назад +1

      +pennypay1 I agree, it didn't sound polite for that cashier to say that to that woman. Maybe that cashier either wasn't in a good mood (they have to act like they're in a good mood while on the job even if they are in a bad mood) or he felt when that woman said she wants to buy chicken, she gave too much information saying that she's making soup where that cashier probably felt that people don't usually say what they are planning to do with the food when wanting to buy something.

      Kind of rude. He might have lost a customer that day.

    • @afriendofbean
      @afriendofbean 6 лет назад +1

      +Karolyn Issup That's true. The cashier probably wasn't in a good mood that day and maybe the woman encouraged her family not to go there anymore because of that rude cashier. (Maybe the cashier felt it was too much information that the woman gave him saying that she's making soup that is, if the cashier and the woman don't know each other not being buddies telling him that she's making soup since I'm sure she wouldn't be inviting him for soup). I guess some cashier's are rude where I remember one customer in a 7-Eleven was buying a fountain drink and a little bit of his drink spilled on the counter next to the fountain drink machine and an employee came out of the "Employee's Only" room and called the customer a baby because he spilled a little and the employee even noticed that the customer poured some of the drinks down the fountain drink drain machine with the employee saying that he wasted the drinks where the customer said that the drinks were tasting watery and the employee said "no they don't taste watery" where the customer shouted "whatever happened to the customer is always right, treat your customers with respect!"

      Older generations used to tell butchers what they were going to cook so that they could get a recommendation. Stew chickens are different than fryers. The cashier was from a younger generation and probably didn't know this (just a guess).

      As this was the early 1970s, it is very likely no premade broth was needed, as the chickens sold were not today's fast growing Cornish/Plymouth Rock hybrid chickens which are slaughtered between 4 and 7 weeks of age, but they grew much more slowly, allowing it to be more flavorful. The best we can do today is to use spent hens, or chickens that were used for egg laying, and slaughtered once they stop.
      What the mother and daughter used probably would have tasted really good with slow cooking and just the carrots, onions, peppers and garlic for flavoring. The potatoes and rice would simply be to add more solids, and make the soup more hearty. This soup is actually easy to make, just throw all the ingredients in your crock pot along with a spent hen, or maybe a stewing hen if you can get one, and let it cook when you either sleep, or work. Salt to taste, you will likely not need other flavors, but some celery and parsley will likely make it even better.
