I am a grade 12 student in Toronto and I am basing my history essay off of the cultural genocide that took place within in the Indigenous peoples community, and this presentation has been so inspiring and so helpful. Your work is amazing and it is so important for not only Indigenous peoples but for all people to understand the true history of Canada.

It was not a genocide. Firstly, the word 'genocide' was not even invented until 1943. Which is not to say the action did not exist prior to that, only that it was named at that time because of the holocaust. So we can agree the word did not exist. There was certainly war and colonization before 1943. So there is debate on the proper word for what happened to indigenous people in Canada. Were they conquered? Defeated? Colonized? Was it genocide? I would argue they were simply in the way of European expansion. Europeans came to North America and were light years ahead in terms of technology. There was already an MO for colonization from places like Africa, and compared to how Africans were treated, I would argue Native Americans were treated quite well. Europeans absolutely could have wiped out 100% of the indigenous population if genocide was the motivation. It wasn't. In the 20th century, and beyond indigenous population in Canada has grown faster than non-indigenous population. To me that does not meet the definition of the word genocide if you think about the 1943 context in which it was conceived. Contrarily what seems to be taboo is the notion that indigenous leaders do not actually favour an outcome to reconciliation. They want it to drag out indefinitely, and to be dual citizens of sovereign nations which receive subsidies from the Canadian government forever.

It’s the terrible legal term that Canada has used, and still uses to this day. It’s a bad term, but “status Indian” is still what is said for legal terms.

With no direct genetic links to Africans besides the links we all have before colonization. No linguistic links and barely any archeological links besides stuff that kinda looks like Africans? No wonder why he didn't include them.

They actually do. Maybe not in this presentation, but they do. Simple research would tell you areas such as southern Ontario and amber Valley in alberta have been spoken about at length. Just because you don't see it? Doesn't mean it's not there.
