      Thank you Aaron. That's a great compliment! I think there are many topics considered verboten by today's scientists. Just sixty years ago, consciousness was one such topic. Now it is an active area of study. Today, the study of afterlives (continuations of consciousness) are viewed how the study of consciousness once was. But we should remember: all ideas are amenable to the scientific method and rational thought, regardless of whether or not that idea originated from a sphere of religion. Progress in science requires the attitudes of doubt, humility, and open-mindedness. Only with these attitudes can we be bold enough to question our existing beliefs and have a hope of getting closer to the truth. I try to bring these attitudes to the investigations of ideas explored on this channel. I am glad you appreciate it. :-)

    How do we know we're not living an afterlife?

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  3 года назад +2

      If in heaven, we possess perfect recall, such that we can remember exactly what it felt like to live in any particular moment in our life on Earth, then you are right. It not only becomes possible, but almost infinitely more likely that this experience you are having now is not the first, but rather one of the many times you recall this moment from your eternal existence in an afterlife.

    What I took away from this episode, or rather one the more important things that was discussed was the way time flows. Past, present, and future are equally real and valid .
    We may only have this one life, the whole of it. If that's the case we'd better make it as interesting and as wonderful as possible, because it's the only one we have. Past ,present, and the future is like a sliding scale for each and every one of us.
    I'd rather make it a happy one , or as close to that as possible.
    However, you covered so much more. Nicely done my friend. The best videos I've ever seen on RUclips.

    My mother died last year. I hope she's reincarnated or she continues her existence in some form somewhere. I didn't say a proper Goodbye to her...the thought of her not existing anymore is something I just can't comprehend. What if I never see her again? What if she doesn't exist anywhere anymore? What if this was my only chance to be with her and I didn't even say "Goodbye"? As a baby I used to cry a lot, whenever my mother was out of my sight for a second even I would start to cry hysterically, I only fell asleep if I was laying on her belly. What if I knew we won't spend much time together?

    • @AlwaysAsking

      Hi Gerry, I am very sorry to hear that. I believe many of the theories presented in this episode are true, and if they are then there are many circumstances through which you will see her again. The next episode I am working on is about consciousness, and the various ways it can continue. Soon after that, I plan to do an episode on the simulation hypothesis, which will show how people can be reunited with each other after death in this universe.
      Nearly every scientific theory that sheds light on the matter, tends to suggest that our reality is infinite, from the question of why anything exists, to why the universe seems fine-tuned, to why the big bang happened, to what photons are, all these lines of inquiry appear to imply an infinite reality where everything possible happens (eventually and somewhere). An infinite and comprehensive reality implies there are parts of reality that contain almost everyone, and there are parts of reality where you will be reunited with others you encountered in this life, and further, it means everything that has happened in this universe will play out exactly as it has, and also every possible variation.
      So in truth, there is no end, to anything or anyone. We are all tied up in a vast, comprehensive, infinitely repeating and varying story of existence, and in this story we sometimes play different characters and roles.
      I hope this may provide you with some consolation.

    At 16 minutes you’re talking about restoring the whole human being on the other side of the universe from different atoms. I have to disagree with you, because there is sufficient evidence that “atoms have a memory” and they remember where they were before. I know it sounds like a strange paradox, (this is Andrey Bogoslowsky. I had a horrible accident that left me unfortunately disabled. Do you think that after death I could get „reborn“ into another universe where this doesn’t happen? I hope that this is true but the eternal inflation theory, at least for me, seems to try to soothe death anxiety and to ensure some kind of personal immortality. I endorse some kind of mechanism, in which I can get reincarnated as something else so I unfortunately believe that I will never ever exist as „myself“ again. Hope there are counter arguments against this

    Joining a collective consciousness in any afterlife may be a big problem for introverts in this life. Of course if no individual identities or memories are retained it doesn't actually "count" as an afterlife, does it?

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  3 года назад

      Hi Chet, That's a good point regarding introverts! As for memories being necessary for it to be an afterlife, I think that is a matter of perspective. If someone develops amnesia and loses all their prior memories, do they continue to live? This gets into questions of personal identity that aren't easy. I appreciate your thoughts and questions. I am planning a video on personal identity in the future.

    Just that one photon from the back of the sun?
    I'm just wondering about the spacecraft that observe the sun from several different orbital patterns.
    Honestly, I'm just trying to understand how "we can never observe it."

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  2 года назад

      Hi Bryan,
      It is not just that one photon on the back of the sun, but any photon that escapes from the sun, travels past Earth (or our space probes), and is never reflected back towards us.
      If there are spacecraft, cameras, mirrors, or other things (even other planets in our solar system) to bounce the photon back towards us, then the argument doesn't work.
      But, if a photon is allowed to run freely through space away from us, then we can never catch up to it (assuming we never develop faster than light travel). So the existence of this photon will never be something we can infer from direct observation. Instead, we can only infer the existence of these "escaping photons" from our theories.

    I am convinced we are continually reincarnated as ourselves, but we make different decisions and lead different lives everytime. In one life, you are the Emperor of Russia, in another, you're a cleaner, in yet another, you are even a serial killer. You live every single possible life and then some, continually for eternity. I think that's why we get deja vu, because it's a literal memory from another incarnation. Maybe even souls follow one another, lovers for eternity. Every decision you regret, in another incarnation, you do the opposite....

      @@luckypoison8708 I've been thinking this for quite a while now. I'm not as sure about this theory, but it's interesting:
      Sometimes when people are classed as insane and they claim they are the reincarnation of Napoleon or Catherine The Great, maybe in another incarnation, they were! Some people just don't seem to be able to handle life and can't process it properly, I think that's where mental illness comes from, because these people can't handle their current incarnation and are unable to properly process their current surroundings, sometimes even committing suicide.
      As I said, I'm not as sure about this theory, but it's an interesting thought.....

    I am slightly confused as to the nature of Mechanism. Is it that simply because momentarily we (the newly forming mind and my dying mind) are identical consciousness must transport (for lack of a better word) to the new mind? If so, how can this exist with the many worlds hypothesis? Wouldn’t that mean my mind is constantly transported to these other brains which exist simultaneously? (This is quite interesting if true because identical brains would perceive their reality identically)

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  3 года назад +1

      Hi The Voice J, great question! Indeed this is what mechanism would imply, which is more akin to a many-minds interpretation. In the many-minds view, rather than the universe branching, it is instead viewed as an infinite collection of identical minds differentiating (as their states diverge in noticeable ways). This concept is covered in more detail in the episode "Why does anything exist?" ruclips.net/video/lYCul43JSxo/видео.html Consciousness is much more deeply connected to the nature of reality than is generally recognized. The next episode will cover mechanism in more detail, it will attempt to answer the question "Why is consciousness?"

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  Год назад

      Hi @knoxvillehermitfreemoviesm3625 , great question. There are different ways to answer that, depending on which theory is under consideration. When considered from the standpoint of Open Individualism, for example, karma is realized in a very direct way: all the harms someone puts out into the world, they experience themselves, likewise all the good someone does for others, they experience themselves.

    • @anapsg7010
      @anapsg7010 7 месяцев назад

      What if someone committed evil acts or caused suffering onto others under insanity. Or because they were abused and never knew any better. Or by accident. Or to save someone else. Thhe sheer notion of good vs bad is our made up concept. Some of what we call evil now was considered normal in the past. What we do now and think is ethical may be regarded as evil in the future. Even suffering can be debateable as good or bad, in some instances (when you strive for a goal for example).
      I personally don t believe in karma. Because good and bad are just 2 sides of the same coin. The universe doesn t care about what we do. Just that we 'do'. There is of course the law of cause and effect which may be confused for karma. But I think that nature, energy, whatever you call it, just wants expansion and diversity, and doesn t care in which way, it s all the same.
      Of course, in our society it benefits us to uphold a good vs evil differentiation. But in a universal perspective, it s pointless.

    The problem with much of this is in the personal pronoun YOU. If Adam1 becomes Adam2, when Adam1 is gone, he will have no shared consciousness in or continuation with Adam2, who will be a new, separate individual. I can't call that "eternal life".

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  3 года назад

      You're right of course, it comes down to a question of personal identity: Are "you" the same person who will awaken in your bed tomorrow morning? Most people would say yes, even though it's not an identical consciousness state, neither physically nor psychologically. Nor is it continuous with the prior state. If you require identity of state than all we ever are becomes but a single thought moment. This is the buddhist idea of Annatta (no self). Which is as consistent as the Hindu idea of Atman (one self). What's inconsistent and not scientifically supported is our common sense view: an identity based on bodily or psychological continuity. This will be a topic of an upcoming video.

This one, though, is a bit too metaphysical and speculative for my taste, but still very educational. I see memory (and therefore continuity) as integral to identity. (This is why Alzheimer's is so tragic, for both the victim and the surviving family.) In this life, I wake up remembering yesterday, but if I was duplicated or recreated through one of these means in the video, I would not remember my "past life". So I wouldn't be me. I wouldn't have survived.

      @@jps0117 Haha, thank you. One of my friends liked that too. :-) I'm also happy to hear you liked the Time episode, also one of my personal favorites. Assuming memory and continuity are important to having an afterlife, then such afterlives are made possible by: #6 Biological immortality, #7 Simulation, and #9 Transcension hypothesis. These methods of survival preserve memory and don't require special assumptions about personal identity.

      @@AlwaysAsking Thank you for your reply. Of course, another question is whether we would want immortality.

    • @AlwaysAsking
      @AlwaysAsking  3 года назад

      @@jps0117 True, some may not want immortality. But I fear that in a sense we have no choice -- we must always be conscious of something. Perhaps the answer to those who don't want immortality, is to change their form of conscious into one that does want it, or alternatively, to forget that they are immortal and enter simulations/worlds where they believe they are regular mortal beings like us.

    Biological immortality is coming soon 2029 at earliest and then true immortality is coming soon after that. Like scientific reincarnation using cloning, resurrection, regeneration, virtualization (digital immortality). Because of the singularity.

    I think the ideal thinker who is studying the subject of afterlife should be a scientist and philosopher. Both disciplines are required, from my point of view, to formulate hypotheses and test them, not ever bringing faith into the study.
    Religion is trying to explain the afterlife for millennia and have failed miserably.

Unfortunately it may be the nature of consciousness that it always finds itself aware of something, for it can never be conscious of non-existence. Many people aren’t able to understand these things since their souls is in a deep sleep autopilot, ready to be shaped by an individual who understands it.
      That’s why you believe in something, be it religion, science (although, apparently you don’t), art or some silly other thing. Nobody can deny that there is you and this, thus there is always everything. There cannot be only “being” or “not being”. Being automatically implies “all”
      I mean we even have a word for it. What do you think “all” means ?
      Or take the term “eternity” only a being who gave up or experienced it will create that term. Otherwise we wouldn’t have that word in the first place.
