- Hey RUclipsrs,
New video out where I am comparing my Gibson Super 400 CES (1980) along with my Gibson L5 CES (1996). Two great guitars with not so subtle differences in their sound.

These are always tough but here I like the slightly darker sound of that L-5.

Very nice playing, and beautiful guitars. Couldn’t hear the difference on my phone speaker, so I used the Bose sound dock. For some reason the L5 sounded a little darker, which I liked. Strike anyone else that way?
Yeah I think it's got something to do with the smaller hollow body of L5 anyways idk it's actually calming.
Compared to the S400, the L-5 sounds a little “muffeled”. But both are fantastic. Thank you !
Both wonderful. If you're not looking, the difference is pretty subtle. Against my expectation I might prefer the Super 400. More importantly: both sound wonderful and are wonderfully played!

Hi Fred, Nice playing, how do you find the size of the L5 vs the 400, are they comfortable to play? Is the Wes Montgomery L5 the same scale?

set pickguard so it does not contact pickup ring(s). install earvana compensated shelf nut for more accurate intonation within one cent instead of 5 cents that you currently have. adjust screws on pickups for equal volume for all strings.
I've a Super 4 so I'd love to say this is the one and pay me for it when I sell. But I don't hear a stitch of difference, at least not here and on my ipad speakers

L5 had a stronger attack ...Very little difference in the ear but sentimental effect ...Kind of more melanholick , expressive and woody tone . The S400 best luxurius sound ...Metal bridge vs a wood one ?

Agreed on all your comments. I have a 175CC for which I have recently flipped the TOM bridge for a wooden one. Indeed, the sound is wayyyyyyyy smoother. Cheers.
