I live in Canada, just wash your car on warmer days. I also have a power washer attachment the has wheels and 5 nozzles. Rolls under the car to rinse everything under there. If you're really worried, get an undercoating or krown protection.
I live in Maine and they love the salt and calcium. Alot of times when sand would be more than enough but they salt and never fails come beginning of February the city is complaining they are running out of salt. I always go to the self serv car washes and blast the underneath and frame atleast once a month, try to go every two weeks but doesn't always happen. Even the drive through car washes say they do the undercarriage and they try but it doesn't get into the cross members and such where salt and sand and dirt can just sit and accumulate. My father In law never washes his truck and gets about 12-14 yrs max, he had to junk a 2008 2500hd with 140,000 miles in 2022 cause it was rotted right out while I sold my 2006 2500hd with 143,000 miles in June for $6000. Cleaning does make a difference.
I live in Wisconsin. Put my Mazda through the Kwik Trip Elite car wash with the undercarriage wash after every snow but only when it is sunny out and in the 30s F out. I do not want my doors to freeze shut on me.

In cold climates leave your car outside. Puting it in a garage and letting the ice and salt melt will corrode the metal much faster than leaving it frozen in the cold. I grew up in Wisconsin and everyone up there knows this. They put tons of salt on the roads in Wisconsin.
If the garage is an attached one (and/or heated) the ice will melt off quickly and dry completely. Salt needs to be wet in order for there to be a chemical reaction. It remains icy and wet outdoors. So I would disagree... garaging the car in a dry garage is better. Better yet, rinse off *then* garage it.
@John-jd7mm My point is the melting process after a car is put in the garage is what provides the moisture and higher temperature that cause the corrosion process .
I send my car through a car wash almost every day during this winter. There's a moo mo car wash where I live and I pay $38 a month for the hot wax version and that gives me unlimited car washes. Best money I ever spent on my car.
Gotta watch those carwashes that have brushes. Ya never know when a car before you will have a piece of metal or wiring come off and get stuck in the brushes then destroy your car's paint. It only takes one time to ruin your cars paint job. It happened to my Infiniti, I took great care to keep that car in pristine condition, and one day I went through my usual carwash and something stuck in the brushes and tore up the paint on my roof.
@EpicATrain search out touch free car washes in your area. The high-tech spots do just as good if not better and you do not need to worry about your car being damaged.
In Ottawa, Ontario, they have a car wash called Halo car wash. They have a monthly membership and different tiers depending upon what you want. You can go as many times per day as you wish and they have mat washers and vacuum and high pressure air to get rid of the water in the crevices. it’s worth the money.
Scotty your right. But there is no Delta sonic in tennese or in lower NY. My car wash has no monthly plan as they want the money. Sienna's book says Avoid high pressure washes. So cleaning at home with a low pressure wash is good. That's a good car have the same in AWD. A mechanic had a tratment machine for the undercarriage. He is by the ski mountains.
I live up "north" in IL near Chicago and they salt the heck out of the roads here, but if you wash your vehicle at least once a week and do the underbody spray (at a car wash) you can also maintain the car (mine is going on about 4-5 years now and no signs of rust or whatever. My previous truck did exhibit some signs of rust but only inside the door frame because the seals would trap water in and it would sit, so it was sort of a design flaw on GM's part in that regard. But it's also a good idea to maybe dry off areas that may not dry off on their own like door frames and sills. Another thing, and not related to washing so much, but if your doors have door plugs (for water) remove them periodically and clean them out. This will help prevent rust from occuring on the door as some cars do have plugs to allow for any water that gets inside the door to be drained. Not all cars have this though (as most do a good job of protecting the door innards from water through the seals around the window). I found out that some of those supposed "unlimited" car washes may have an actual limit, but it's like per month or per week. So like you can maybe only go once every 5 or 7 days. For most people, that would be enough, but you can't go like every day for some of them. But this does balance out for them because most people probably don't wash their vehicles in the warmer months as often, maybe once a month if that when there isn't salt on the ground. In salty condition, the key is to (a) not put the car in a heated garage and (b) wash it regularly (like once a week) and you should be fine. Some of the "older" Kias like those from around 2010 are not that bad. My friend just traded in (last year in 2024) his 10 year old Kia with 310,000 miles on it. It still ran fine, but he likes to travel and he said that with 310k he wanted something newer. Now I should note that Kia did replace his engine at 150k and gave him a lifetime warranty on the engine (as part of a recall). But he was mostly worried about other things going out like the transmission or major components (because of rust, even though the vehicle had no rust on it, but more so just it's age). The issue with the pre-existing conditions is you have to legitimately prove that the condition and some you can, but for example, transmissions you sometimes cannot and that's what makes it hard there. The moral is to just not buy used cars if you can avoid it, unless you're buying something like a Honda or Toyota perhaps.
Also, there is a spray can - DuPont Snow & Ice, it is pre treatment, I spray under the fender, on headlight / tail lights and mirrors, you need to wait a few minutes and wipe off with a microfiber towel so it want be a hazy. Keeps off ice and snow to build up...
@donniev8181 besides what I mentioned above, also I do spray on brake lines too. I ski all my life and whenever I'm heading up to high elevation areas I do it, not really within a city commute, unless I know it's a snow storm on the way...
I just buy used cars for about $5000. After 5 or more years I get another. What's wrong with a Mazda 3? Spending $40K or more is INSANE. I don't worry much about washing it too often here in NY.
the last segment of the woman with her car breaking down I had the same problem when I bought my Jeep wrangler the engine and transmission was fine but the frame was in certain sections were rotted out and when I looked at it the day I bought it it looked fine and it was undercoated but after 2 weeks I noticed a hole in the frame that I didn't see and I took back to the dealer where I bought it and they took care of it on their dime. I still own the jeep and in 2022 or earlier I did have to have the frame repaired again on my dime.
Scotty, you crack me up......if you have a garden hose that is still functioning in the "winter" you don't ACTUALLY have "winter"....ha ha..... In Canada, if you try to use your garden hose in the winter, it will freeze and crack open, and also the actual water taps on the house will crack open. Anyway, YOU don't have winter....you have a cool fall or a cool spring.....head north if you want to experience winter.... ha ha ha
I just spray mine off the best I can with water, then pull It into the garage. I've never had an issue. And I live in a climate that's cold in the winter.
Scotty a Video Idea: With the fires in LA what should auto owners do to their cars after being exposed to all the ash, chemicals and debris, from the fires? Air cleaner, cabin filter, thorough hand spray wash to remove grit, careful vehicle inspection, etc.
@@wg5768 Honda has used wet timing belts in several small engines for decades. The vertical OHC engine on Scotty's pressure washer has one as do the little all position Honda engines. I have both types myself and have never had a problem with the belt.
I have a '97 Land Cruiser (fj80) with 29k original miles. I can't stand the later models. I think Land Cruiser died after '97. And now this new crap being called a Land Cruiser is an insult.
Well here in Canada I just undercoat my vehicles every fall with a drip less oil undercoat usually fluid film it puts a force field on the undercarriage and inside the the body panels plus as a bonus actually lubricates the moving components in the suspension of the vehicle 👍🏻
Scotty! Those tires on that Toyota van are going to kill that vehicle long before the salt will. OMG! I can see the wear bars are even with the top of the tread! 😨😱🤯 Strongly recommend that van's owner to replace those tires immediately. I'm also wondering what the date code on those tires says. If they are more than 8 or 9 years old, they are too old.
Couple years ago I moved to WI from AZ. Wasn’t thinking when I drove the Tahoe through a car wash when it was about 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Doors almost froze shut on me.
Had that happen to me in an 89 escort gt. I drove around with heat on high. It still didn't thaw the doors. I had to climb through the hatch. That opened for me. Good thing I was 18, I don't think I would enjoy that at near 47.
I've tried hooking up to hot (warm) water from the laundry tub faucet. This will not freeze when it hits the cold metal, and is easier on your hands (no frostbite)

Always use brushless car washes. They are harder to find but are great
Also, there is a spray can - DuPont Snow & Ice, it is pre treatment, I spray under the fender, on headlight / tail lights and mirrors, you need to wait a few minutes and wipe off with a microfiber towel so it want be a hazy. Keeps off ice and snow to build up...
Thanks, do you spray it onto every part of the car or just the plastics?
@donniev8181 besides what I mentioned above, also I do spray on brake lines too. I ski all my life and whenever I'm heading up to high elevation areas I do it, not really within a city commute, unless I know it's a snow storm on the way...
You need to worry more about those worn tires. What do you do in NYC when your hose is off until April
Krown or Fluid Film once annually
Or toss your sprinkler under for 5 minutes
I just buy used cars for about $5000. After 5 or more years I get another. What's wrong with a Mazda 3? Spending $40K or more is INSANE. I don't worry much about washing it too often here in NY.
I coat my frame each year with NH Oil Undercoating.
the last segment of the woman with her car breaking down I had the same problem when I bought my Jeep wrangler the engine and transmission was fine but the frame was in certain sections were rotted out and when I looked at it the day I bought it it looked fine and it was undercoated but after 2 weeks I noticed a hole in the frame that I didn't see and I took back to the dealer where I bought it and they took care of it on their dime. I still own the jeep and in 2022 or earlier I did have to have the frame repaired again on my dime.
Nice.
Will this work in -30 here in ny?
I just get my car washed every day
Hyundai had a period where they were pretty good. Kia has always sucked from day 1.
Viral thanks Scotty Great American 🇺🇸 😊
I’m From Niagara Falls also
I love my car wash membership! I go like 3 times a week It’s $19/month
Why don't they use a sand compound instead of corrosion salt compound? Some cities are experimenting with turf or sand instead of salt?
Hate how those automatic car wash places scratch paint and right side headlights!
Get your car and truck coated with Krown rust proofing!!!!!!!!
Tell the guy flipping the Land Cruiser I have the complete collection of Beanie Babies and a Tickle Me Elmo he can flip.
I washed under my old honda accord a long time ago and then it started squeaking all the time because I washed all of the grease out.
Good idea, but a lot of people live in apartment complexes that don't allow you to wash your cars.
True. And my apartment parking lot is next to a natural river. It wouldn’t be good to have run off from soap into the river.
Good thing they don’t drop 9 million pounds of salt on the road that would just end up in the river….
Anyway, YOU don't have winter....you have a cool fall or a cool spring.....head north if you want to experience winter.... ha ha ha
I use ACF50 treatment prior winter and just leave it.
Car washes with brushes scratch your car finish. They are small scratches, but if you really care about the paint only use touchless washes.
I am in North Central PA. Lots of salt when you don't need it. Alot less when the roads need it!
Same here in NJ.
Honda engines are never black, they are the Chinese copies.
Honda motors are red.
I just spray mine off the best I can with water, then pull It into the garage. I've never had an issue. And I live in a climate that's cold in the winter.
FYI don't forget get to check the description box folks I bought a great scan tool from his link.
One of those carwashes did 7000 dollars of damage to my car so taking a pass on that part. I will do it myself
Touchless wash?
What damages occurred?
Cant use this in Canada. Hose is frozen before you start
So just don’t wash your car in the winter time or I guess wait for a break in the temperature and wash it on a plus temperature day?
I like access!
Find a TOUCHLESS CARWASH, those brushes will kill your paint fast.
Unless your paint is trash already, my crown vic has flaking paint so I'd still use a brush... Sometimes lol
Hey Scotty I’m in Tennessee as well. Where by? I might need a mechanic 😁
I wouldn't use those tires even in the summer. Don't think about the salt, change the tires.
As long as the roads remain salted, what point is there in removing it from the car? It just goes back on the road.
I’m in Arizona. What is that rust thing ya’ll talkin’ about?
Scotty a Video Idea: With the fires in LA what should auto owners do to their cars after being exposed to all the ash, chemicals and debris, from the fires? Air cleaner, cabin filter, thorough hand spray wash to remove grit, careful vehicle inspection, etc.
Good idea! 👍🏼
And now, a huge LITHIUM BATTERY FACILITY north of Los Angeles is on FIRE !!!!!!!
I love when Scotty says, "Okay it's flowing" when the water is bursting out of the hose. Made me laugh. And look what a great Dad he is. Respect!
Toyota made a huge mistake with the LandCruiser making it a hybrid 4cyl turbo. What a shame.
Agreed. Disappointing
Yep: neutered it
They have a hybrid 3.5 liter 6 cylinder that they used in some of the early Lexus RX. Why not perfect that engine instead of 4cyc turbo?
If your car has manual transmission, make it rust proof. It will run forever.
Can't imagine doing this every night after work, how often should this be done?
Dont drive until the roads are clear and dry..
Can you do a video on the new bmw m340i?
Does kitty litter work better than salt?
Kitty litter turns to clay slime as soon as it gets wet. I’ve seen it dozens of times. Totally useless in snow.
That particular kind of Honda engine on your pressure washer has a rubber timing belt running in oil. How can Honda do it but Ford can't?
Honda is serious company , and compare ford with Honda , ford are live only cos of government ,
Also has a plastic cam shaft! Garbage
That power washer is not powering a car, propelling over 2700lbs down the road. Big difference, not as much tension on the moving belt
Since when do single cylinder engines have a timing belt?
@@wg5768 Honda has used wet timing belts in several small engines for decades. The vertical OHC engine on Scotty's pressure washer has one as do the little all position Honda engines. I have both types myself and have never had a problem with the belt.
Can I attach this to a fire hydrant.
Thanks for the tip, Scotty! 😊
He’s on Addie’s
As a Californian I don’t have to worry about salt. I do have to worry about feces and needles.
Move to a Blue county.
And lithium battery plant FIRES !!!!!!
And wild fires.
Me too. What is this "snow" they speak of?
🤔
And fires, sadly.
What if a person lives in San Diego and never leaves San Diego in the winter?
Nothing like a Scotty vid! 🤙
"DESTROY" your car... c'mon guy. Before winter you just ceramic coat your car and your fine and spray the bottom and wheel wells with Fluid Film.
Car washes every week are just fine and less messy.
Use Surface Shield by Blaster, you only need to do it once. Make sure can temperature is 75 F
unfortunately its 10 degrees here in wisconsin lol
I thought water itself would dissolve salt.
I go through the car wash every week . Above freezing here, maybe April/may
That’s his son van
I was looking for a comment like that. You are 💯 right 👍
I would move
Scotty your pressure washer was walking away after you started it 😮.
Screw that! I'm going to the car wash.
Good thing I was 18, I don't think I would enjoy that at near 47.
that happened to me in the 90's with my ford ranger and my door would not latch and I had to hold my door closed while I was driving that was scary.
A hose...at -10...-20 C....nope
haha I'm Canadian so its going to get down to - 24 C (-13F)
Or you could just pay for the unlimited wash package at the local car wash, and run through it on the way home every day!
Scotty calling out his son in front of everyone!
Only way to survive in MA is a car wash.
thanks for the advice
A boy (Scotty) and his toys! 😅
Too cold to use a hose, I’ll just go to the car wash.
I've tried hooking up to hot (warm) water from the laundry tub faucet. This will not freeze when it hits the cold metal, and is easier on your hands (no frostbite)
You need new tires in case you didn't notice you claim to be a mechanic ????
Nobody is washing their own car in the driveway in the winter.
You will never get the salt out of the metal's joins; this is where the worst rust can start.
I think you're right. But keeping it clean helps !
You run it through a car wash for Christ sake.
@@WALTERBROADDUS Don't use Christ's name in vain. Blasphemy!
I've always sprayed suspension parts liberally with wd40. Also all nooks & crannies to to displace water after washing. Works for me.
I just known my truck each year $169/year
