One of my favourite Bible verses:
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them."

At 45, with 46 fast approaching and my house renovation in progress, I’m preparing for a long-anticipated escape from the UK. Over time, I’ve come to realise that the most valuable thing we carry through life is our memories. In the end, they’re all we truly have. It’s remarkable how little we actually need to be content-some of the most unforgettable moments in my life were when I was completely skint. The resilience of the human spirit never ceases to amaze me. When we put our minds to something, there’s almost no limit to what we can achieve. As a species, we’re capable of extraordinary things, and it’s in the simplest times that we truly grasp that.

Keep going, l was you in the 80's and l've got to 60 having very rarely had a "boss", which is what it was about for me, being free. High risk? I jacked in my job the day my 3rd child was born and l did that to make me do "something". I always think "it'll work out" and it always has, is it luck, blind faith? All l know is l wasn't suited to 9-5. With your health and energy as well as your ability to problem-solve, these are the same skills required by entrepreneurs and self-made people, you'll be alright. I did something similar (in my youth)- deliberately running out of money in Turkey- moving from a dorm room to a disused kitchen to save money in the hostel, getting a "job" teaching English (which turned out to be a bit of a rip off), eventually borrowing money to get home from someone travelling to the UK- I was alright and had an adventure and repaid the person who lent me the money.
You sound like you've budgetted and know how much it will cost to get back to the UK. You have accomodation and transport in one, you may even find paid work with ex-pats in Greece.

Whoever is saying just get a job has not had a look at the job market in the past 2 years, this is no longer an employee strong market, there are too many unemployed and too little jobs available, I have been an IT Contractor for the past 2 years and have been laid off last week only to find that the typical roles I looked for a few years ago no longer exist, so I now need to contemplate going after an entirely different career despite being in IT for 12 Years.

Hard to be motivated when most work that runs the society simply don't pay. But you want to blame the player, not the game.

@alexandrabellerose3550 I don't read his comment as being either / or. He probably has contempt for the political class, but that shouldn't mean he should necessarily cheer on someone opting out of work and choosing state benefits which come from the percentage taken from the wages of those of us working a 40 hour + week. I don't quite see how anyone would cheer that on, when it was a choice not to earn a wage and instead sit at home and be paid. Its not so great to know I wake up at 4:30am each day to support someone laying in bed receiving state support when such money could instead be going to struggling public services.

I get what you're banking on, as there is a theory out there that the best opportunities only manifest when the water has reached boiling point and the water evaporates, almost like life puts that litmus test out there to test your resolve and faith (so to speak), but equally we often don't hear from those who rolled that dice and it went awry. Such folks probably scuttle off quietly with their tails between their legs rather than crowing that it went spectacularly wrong. Personally I always return with a cushion foundation to build upon. I know you think that those of us who play it safe are dullards and you probably think or life is boring and predictable. But the weeks of steady paychecks, although they are nothing to set the world on fire, they've paid the bills, children are born, grow up, fun times, not so fun times, memories made, now grandchildren are here and life is a bit easier. I'm 60 now. Every month, there is a little more left in my bank after the bills are paid, the house is paid off and I've been thinking of retiring at 62. I have a pickup with relatively low mileage, I've bought me a cheap slide in camper for my pickup, I've beefed up my rear suspension, added solar and lithium batteries to the mix, no holding tanks, wash dishes in a pan, cook on gas, composting toilet, 5 gallon Solar shower hanging in the bathroom standing in a bucket from Walmart and shower water thrown out the back door into the grass along with the dishwater which are both completely legal. I plan to travel the US, visit and stay as long as I want visiting my grandkids, leaving when they are sick of me, traveling the mountains in the summer, and the southwest US in the winter. I won't get much Social Security at 62 but I won't need much either. I see flying by the seat of your pants as wreckless endangerment but you know, hike your own hike, you do you. But I have no worries, no anxieties and I'm comfortable and there's nothing wrong with that. But I stick around to see how it works out for you because I'm still 2 years away from my goal and I'm packing some cash back waiting for my time.

I would add however that it is possible to screw up to the extent where getting back your livelihood becomes very difficult. Don't end up in prison and don't get into thousands of dollars of debt. Some people have a moral problem with taking welfare. I have no problem with it at all. The government considers us tax cattle so any way in which you can squeeze money from the system is good. @@simonsmith7251 Perhaps, but craven materialism is not a life, workaholsim is an addiction that robs you of enjoying life.
