    2:02 "One word to describe the theme of the dungeon you want to do."
    2:09 "Brevity is the king of creativity."
    I think what you're trying to say is concept which is what my illustration professor used to say. Concept is king!

    i was inspired by this video all the way back in lockdown, so much so that I upped my own terrain building and even have my own growing channel now. I have come back to watch this again after maybe three years and it still stands as hands down one of the best terrain videos there is out there, this philosophy of what to do with your terrain is outstanding and it is a genuine pleasure to see you play through your ideas. Too often I end up leaving my physical build to literally minutes before the session... It works well but taking time to explore these themes earlier, like you do takes it to a level above... it practically writes the game for you which I guess ultimately is a good chunk of the point!

    I’m so glad that people like you and prof dungeon are here to preach the game of D&D as it was in the 70s-80s...
    That’s EXACTLY how I do dungeons but I use two words (I title my dungeons rough draft with two words...like “Stone Kobolds” or “Ice Lizards”...do you know how cool it is to see someone doing what I do but never thought of how to teach it?
    Soooooo cool! Runehammer definitely gets d&d (not wotc d&d ... TSR D&D pre 3).

    I feel like you just gifted me the seeds to grow themed dungeons. The package says "Runehammer variety mix: Stone, Savage, Ice, Necro, Madness, Thyme, Illusion, Ensnare, Tremor, Flood, Burnt, Broken, Mechanical, Meniacal, Gothic and countless more" Just plant on any imaginary, 2d or 3d surface and watch the creativity blossom. Caution: may cause prolonged periods of immersive gameplay. If gameplay longer than four hours is experienced...

  • @ndowroccus4168

    When we were dm’ing back in the day, the trick was to find different ways to make the game better (by finding cool things in non-d&d supplements like war games, dragon mag, dungeon mag (meh), and other board games like monopoly, boggle, wizards, etc...).
    D&D is all about making a game into an EVENING to remember...if you can play for four hours and still be screaming and laughing, you succeeded..

    When you were explaining the part about you dont have to transcribe every detail from a map onto your wet erase or your 3d terrain i was thinking thats the exact problem i always have, worrying that my terrain doesnt match whats in the module. Then you looked into the camera and said "Let go Luke" (my name) it really struck a cord. Thank you for encouraging me to care less about the details and just getting on with a great game. My man

  • @ddesouz6
    @ddesouz6 7 лет назад +2

    This is such an important part of my d&d sessions. I run mostly home brew and I tent to lay out my terrain first and then draw out my map so I can add detail to specific areas. I know, I know, I'm doing it backwards. I've recently decided to run a preexisting module, with the idea that it would help my story telling and DMing skills in general (Sunless Citadel). So I read the story and really enjoyed it. When it came time to recreate the module with 3D terrain i came up to a road block. The map was way to big for me to do. I turned to our RPG community for help. Fistfullofdice, suggested I focus only a couple aspects of the story so I don't get to overwhelmed. He was a great help. I zoned in on the decent into the citadel, it's draconic theme, the feud between the kobolds and goblins, and the underground forest. I junked the original map and made it my own way. It really turned out great and I can't wait to run it. Now I just have to get the party to head back to Oakhurst (I planted a side quest, which my group bought hook line and sinker, in order to give me time to prepare).
    The point to all this is... it's really important to be able to "translate" your module or home brew into your 3D terrain without getting to caught up on intricate details. This is where your channel has helped me so much. One million thanks. Keep up the great work.

    i love the lessons on game design here and have learned a lot from it and from your channel as a whole, but i feel it's important to note that s*vage is an anti-indegnous racial slur, especially in the way you described the word at 5:37. Love the work you do, and i know i'm 4 years late ahaha but I just felt this needed to be said

    • @Runehammer1
      @Runehammer1  3 года назад +1

      savage can be used that way, but the word is not intrinsically off-limits or negative... it can literally mean 'natural, primal, raw, unfettered'

    • @Finn5659
      @Finn5659 3 года назад

      @@Runehammer1 thank you for replying!! I’m not sure i completely agree with that, but you do specifically relate it to being ‘low-tech’ and ‘tribal in a bad way’ in the timestamp I linked, which i feel is you drawing from on the racist history of the word

  • @jamiehurricane
    @jamiehurricane 7 лет назад +2

    I think this is fine if you have a week between modules and you have time to spitball ideas, write down a bunch of mind dump, collate it all, formulate and timeline it all, flesh it out, make continuity, insert relevant 'cold' monsters etc. Ultimately its a good idea for complex fleshed out ideas. I dont have anywhere near enough time to do all this.

    • @guitarmuser6150
      @guitarmuser6150 7 лет назад

      I would encourage you to give this approach another chance and some consideration. I only say that cuz the thing I took away from this is that it helps, and gave me ideas for how to make dungeon building a more focused and therefore quicker process. I have struggled with dungeon making myself. Love to DM games, but creativity as far as story, dungeons, scenarios etc is definitely NOT my strong point. Hank's ideas have allowed me to have much more success in not only coming up with things quickly, but planning and setting them up quickly. Anyways, just thought I'd drop that in because I think that's what Hank's doing with these ideas, helping us with ideas to make things easier and quicker. 8-) Either way, never give up the fight to play D&D like a badass! Cheers.

    I'd kind of like to get into model building from my role-playing game but it's Mutants & Masterminds so I would need to build modern building and streets. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get to start with that.
    Some things that come to mind, off the top of my head, would be to find some modern gaming maps as inspiration and maybe finding toy cars and such for the street stuff. Other than that I'm not sure.

    • @Runehammer1
      @Runehammer1  7 лет назад

      Thanks for that. Honestly since my original post my situation has changed and all my role-playing gaming is done online now (through roll20). I did invest in a large package of map tiles for that now I'm practicing on how to get good maps out of them. In the meantime I've found several sources of good, modern, already made maps I have been able to use.
      I will keep you advice in mind should my situaiton change again and I hope it does because I miss playing table top. Thanks again.
