All I could think of was “calligraphy and illumination,” but knew that wasn’t *exactly* correct. “Illuminated calligraphy” or illuminated lettering is the correct term.
The big beautiful letter at the beginning of an illuminated manuscript is called a Historiated Initial (or sometimes just an Initial Capital if it's just extra big), especially if it has a picture that describes what's going on in the text. (An Inhabited Initial just has a picture of humans or animals in it, but they're decorative). Also this is my moment of Nerd Pride today, I don't get to drag out my knowledge of illuminated manuscripts often. This is a gorgeous spread too.
I see another comment has said what the big letters are called in illuminated manuscripts, but another fun fact - when there's a big letter at the beginning of a paragraph (whether it's fancy or just big) in typography, it's called a drop cap. Love this spread!
hey Elizabeth. I’ve had a really horrible day today that involved a panic attack unfortunately, but one thing that made me feel better was knowing that I could get under my blankets and watch your videos once I got home from work. you just bring me a lot of comfort as a person, even through your videos and you always have. I watch your videos before I go to sleep because they really help calm me down. thank you for being there for me, even when you don’t know you are
The cut to the shot of Chewy sleeping on your bujo is so perfect. There I was in complete awe of your line art alone and now I’m 🥰 at the floof and the gentle pets you’re giving him 🪟☀️
Congratulations, Elizabeth! This is simply one of the most stunningly beautiful bullet journal spreads I have ever seen! I love the frame design, the art nouveau font, and your colour palette. The spread truly captures the luminosity of a turn-of-the-century stained glass window. Tiffany would be proud! Absolute perfection!!!
aww, you're treating us with the coloring book stained glass version!! 💖 this is such a lovely theme, i'll definitely be using it for may alongside my mucha / art nouveau stickers 🌿✨
There are so many “plan with me” videos out there, but yours are so unique and absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing your talents and ideas with us! ❤
The illuminated manuscript lettering really reminds me of an illustrated short story I read this week - Chivalry by Neil Gaiman. As always, it's such a beautiful theme and your attention to detail blows me away!
Kitty cameo!!! 😻 This is a beautiful theme! I love the art Nouveau lettering alongside the stained glass. My local adult education centre has a stained glass course & I’ve always wanted to do it, maybe this is the year!
I’m thinking about yellows and maroons. They are in the stain glass window at the church where I grew up. My friend just posted the quote on her Facebook page. 😀
Idk if the big letter at the beginning of paragraphs are called but I call them the “SpongeBob procrastination letters” from the ‘what I learned in boating school’ essay
Wow, that cover page looks stunning! I loved it even before the watercolors lol, really brought it to life ✨It's nice to see your process because man, that looked very challenging.
🔆What a lovely design! I'd be tempted to recreate a traditional colourway probably, like some of the beautiful stained glass windows I've seen in churches and cathedrals in the UK, so more red/green/yellow/blue with black framing. But equally a purple/blue/pink option sounds lovely, so many options!
The images in the old catalogue actually had a lot of greens/yellows/oranges which definitely inspired my colour palette! I’m not sure if that was a stylistic choice for the catalogue or not, but it was interesting nonetheless.
Firstly, hats off to your patience and secondly, what a wonderful artistic spread. I started bullet journaling this year and I get confused to decide a particular theme, tho I choose to keep it minimalist. I would like to try this one for my bujo some day ❤️🌄(why isn't there a window emoji?😁)
Oh my this is an idea I had for my May spread! Your idea seems to remind me of the Victorian style of stained glass windows! I live in England, so I’m going for a more medieval/gothic style inspired from cathedrals and castles. I will be sure to share on instagram and tag you to show you the differing styles! I’m also using a differing technique to your watercolour aswell! Thanks for sharing! 🥰
The stained glass theme is so pretty! The cover page is gorgeous! Forgive me if this is forward, but are you going to post a May spread for your husband's bujo?
I instantly loved how simplistic the coverpage design -can- be (yet still look intricate - in a good way). It's encouraging. Would LOVE to see this in your gold style (*nudge nudge wink wink*). And I love the Dark Academia music. Very fitting! Last, but not least: "not worrying about it being imperfect, life is too short". YES! I hope others catch on to this. I literally have "TIME" tattooed on my fingers. We can regenerate money, we can't regenerate time. We can only spend it once. - I'm realistic and know life's full of hardship, but spending our time as best we can on fun/positive things is such an important lesson I keep reminding myself of. (End of essay, :) )
So true! I often forget that when my perfectionism rears its ugly head, but I try to gently remind myself that time is precious and perfection doesn’t exist, anyway ❤️
I absolutely love this theme - I am going to try my hand at it! I think I'm going to replace the yellow with pale pinks. My finger are crossed tightly, because I am so bad a watercolors.😇
It curious the thing you love about stain glass, the inconsistency of colour, would have been seen as a fault historically, the colour difference is different to the glass not all be perfect the same thinkness.

What colours would you use in a stained glass theme?
“Illuminated” lettering is that large single letter as in medieval books
Oo thank you! That's so perfectly on theme for this month, too ☺✨

You just keep killing it. Every month is delightful. Personally love this era of stained glass.

Haha my little grumpy boy trying to chomp on me 😂❤️
So pretty! Gave me LotR Elven vibes - the greens of the woods and the golden sunlight filtering through. Happy sigh! 😊🥰🌼🪴🏵️🌿🌳☀️❤✨

Love the stained glass! I would have chosen blues, reds, pinks, and purples. Stained glass makes my heart happy. It's just so beautiful.
Oo that would be beautiful ❤️
aww, you're treating us with the coloring book stained glass version!! 💖 this is such a lovely theme, i'll definitely be using it for may alongside my mucha / art nouveau stickers 🌿✨

Awww, hi Chewie!
Haha Chewy has been doing a lot of lying down on my journals/books lately and staring into my eyes like “pet me now, human” 😤lol
That looks like a real stained glass and it looks so good :)
Thank you so much! 🥺❤️❤️
Idk if the big letter at the beginning of paragraphs are called but I call them the “SpongeBob procrastination letters” from the ‘what I learned in boating school’ essay
Really lovely. I liked the colours you used. I would probably use blues and greens.
💡 Stained glass! What a cool concept for a bullet journal. I was looking for some inspiration for May!
I hope you have fun with it! ❤️
