    When Mitch does it to us, we call it a "Mitch slap."
    When Avi does it, we call it an "Avi-lanche."
    When Kevin does it, we call it a "KO."
    And unfortunately, we haven't been able to come up with any clever names for the same thing when it comes from Matt, Kirstin, or Scott. But all the members of Pentatonix were fantastic in this one.

    • @elizabethtucker6026
      @elizabethtucker6026 4 месяца назад +3

      Well, maybe they're not as well known, but when Matt makes magic, my friend group almost always refers to that as "Sallee Smooth." When Kirstin goes off, we say it's "Une Belle Belt," which refers to Kirstin's gorgeous appearance and beautiful, powerful voice as a two-fer.
      Scott has two, sometimes we just acknowledge that what we've come to expect from the "Golden Grit," but if it's more a commentary on his range, rifts, or runs, we say we've "seen a Scott Showcase."
      Mitch is most famous for his Mitch-slap, but when we want to comment on his lower register, we note his "magnificent Mitch-Masc" like in Take on Me and Amazing Grace. Not to be confused with his "Marvelous Mitch-Mask," which refers to his chameleon-like sense of fashion. They're all worth as much complimentary wordplay as we can think up, we figure.
      I've also always appreciated Qofy's group reference to "the Aliens," because we know they're not human, either singularly or together. 😉

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 4 месяца назад +1

      @@elizabethtucker6026 Not as punny, but serviceable. I do have a bit of a problem with calling them "aliens," though.
      This is hard to express properly, so I'm saying up-front that I mean no criticism of anyone; I'm just talking about something I think we should consider.
      Someone, I don't remember who, once said, "If you want to be rich and famous, first try just being rich and see if that satisfies you." The members of Pentatonix are both rich and famous, and fame has drawbacks, the biggest of which is being set apart from other people. Being alienated.
      Mitch and Scott grew up gay, in one of the most homophobic parts of the U.S., yet they had the courage to come out of the closet in high school - I can't imagine being that brave. What I CAN imagine is being that desperate to be myself, no matter what anyone else thinks.
      I love Pentatonix's music, of course; we all do. And I admire the members of Pentatonix for the people they are; again, I think we all do. But while talent may be inborn, good character is a matter of choice; it's the hard work of being true to yourself, and thoughtful, and honest, and kind. It's a very human thing, and that hard work should be recognized and acknowledged.
      And then there's the corollary to referring to Pentatonix as "alien"; it's a way to deny the ways in which we, also, are spectacular. Because we are, you know. Every one of us. We sometimes lose sight of our own uniqueness, but it's always there, waiting for us to find it again.
      I think Scott, Mitch, Mary Lambert, Mario Jose, and Brian Justin Crum said it best, in their description of SuperFruit's cover of "Rise":
      “As music artists we are given an incredible platform with which to reach the world. One of the most inspiring and rewarding aspects of our job is the ability to make a difference in people's lives. In keeping with the spirit of why we pursued our dreams as music artists, and the positive impact we aspired to have on others, we decided to make this video with some of our closest friends in celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and all of our fans who love unconditionally and see no barriers. For anyone who has ever felt pride in who they are, and for anyone who has ever doubted the power of your own uniqueness, this video is for you. It warms our hearts to finally be able to share this with you!!
      xoxo
      Scott, Mitch, Mary, Mario, Brian”

    You forget this is acapella - they have such a full sound! My favorites are always PTX covers, taking nothing away from other amazing singers - but PTX captured my heart and soul with who they are and what they are about - they bring joy to all that they do. They also have done a number of wonderful originals.

    The second singer is Matt. He took over bass from Avi in 2017. This is the only member change in their 13 year history. The last singer is Kirstin with her power belting. Recommend their cover of The Prayer.

    This is actually their second cover of O Holy Night. I think they’re working on a new style, call it PTX 2.0, which this is an example of. So is their cover of Seal’s Kiss From A Rose. This is a new, powerful, dynamic version of PTX with gritty Scott vocals, soulful Matt, and everyone just steps up their game. I’m loving the changes.

    It's a wonderful, awesome, powerful piece.
    Their arranger is generally Ben Bram, but the whole group does the arrangement with him...usually sitting around putting together a basic idea with recordings, etc and sends it to Ben, who takes their ideas and makes the formal arrangement and they all participate in discussions and changes as the pieces progresses to recording time. As far as who sings what part or does the lead, it depends on who fits the best. There's no ego in the group, and since the main lead shifts quite often between Scott, Kirstie and Mitch, throughout a song, they each get to have their moments. Matt as bass and Kevin as beatboxer generally provide all the percussion, but both have wonderful voices and do have their moments sometimes, depending on the song's arrangement.

    I see many comments recommending “Pentatonix - The Making of Evergreen”. However, I believe they mean “Pentatonix - The Recording Of Evergreen”. The “Making” video is a 2 minute rehash of the 17 minute “Recording” video.
    Recommend a reaction to the “Recording” version first.

  • @slhoog8164

    A powerful arrangement indeed! Looking at things you've reacted to by other groups that PTX has also done, I see 2: Creep and The Prayer. Creep was done as part of their appearance on The Masked Singer. Probably the best version is the one where they sing on the show after they have been unmasked.
    Several others have recommended "The Recording of Evergreen", and I agree, however I would recommend reacting to The Prayer before you do that, since that arrangement is one of the ones that's a part of that documentary. I think what you see in The Recording of Evergreen makes more sense (and is more impressive) if you've already heard/seen PTX version of The Prayer.

    Pentatonix is on a whole other level now, I have been watching them since 2011 and this is a whole other thing. We have seen glimpses of this throughout the year, when they were on the Masked Singer, you should check that out, Pentatonix-Masked Singer-All performances. It is like they left their 20s behind, they all matured, they all worked hard and this is the spectacular result. You will also see it in “Kiss from a Rose” in the Vevo studio. Top of this genre and top of their game. In my opinion, don’t come for me!

    For a bit of insight into their arrangement process, you might try "The Making of Evergreen." I'm sure it won't tell you everything you want to know, but it should answer some of your questions.
    And for another song that will make you say "THIS is how you praise the Lord," try "O Come All Ye Faithful."

    You were in my recommendations, dropping by to say hi. I fell in love with PTX when they were on a show called the Sing Off, no one can beat their Christmas music. Looked at your playlists and you have a good selection of music to listen to, Home Free was also on the show Sing Off, and I have followed them every since. There was another a capella group on the Sing Off at the same time as Home Free, that I didn't see a category for and that is VoicePlay.
    PTX are considered the Kings and Queen of a capella and has worked endlessly to bring a capella into the main stream and have done an amazing job. Home Free is another group that have the tightest harmonies I've heard and love their laid back fun side. They're the guys you want to have BBQs and tail gate parties with.
    VoicePlay is considered the theatre kids of a capella, if you like Viking songs they have some, Disney, yes to that too, musicals yes, and more. Give them a look, pick out a song you like, they do any genre and since they are independent almost none of their content is blocked. Give them a try please. 😊 And thank you.

    For a different approach to the song, here's Avi Kaplan performing "O Holy Night" at his December 2022 concert in Houston TX. While he had never done any Christmas music after leaving PTX in 2017, he decided to put together this arrangement on the fly at the last minute as a thank you to the 3 Texas cities that had had their concerts postponed because of a family emergency. Those 3 concerts were tacked onto the end of his US/Canada tour, with this as a final encore. He gave it a Texas twist, including the pedal steel player in his tour band. And his vocal was amazing. ruclips.net/video/5cvb2qOU0o0/видео.html
