  • The Nag Hammadi library is a collection of ancient Gnostic texts discovered in 1945 near the town of Nag Hammadi in Upper Egypt. These texts provide insights into Gnostic thought, a diverse religious and philosophical movement that emerged in the early centuries of the Common Era. While the collection includes various treatises and dialogues, exploring the origin of the world is a central theme in several Nag Hammadi texts.
One prominent text is the "Apocryphon of John," which presents a cosmogonic myth detailing the creation of the world from a Gnostic perspective. According to this text, the divine realm, or the Pleroma, is the ultimate reality. It is inhabited by aeons, divine emanations or attributes representing aspects of the divine. The ineffable and transcendent God, often referred to as the Monad, exists beyond the Pleroma.
The narrative describes how a divine being named Barbelo emanates from the Monad, followed by other aeons. One of these aeons, Sophia (Wisdom), becomes involved in the creation of the world. Sophia, through a misguided desire to know the ineffable God, brings forth an incomplete and malformed divine being known as Yaldabaoth. Yaldabaoth then becomes the chief archon, or ruler, of the material world, known as the Kenoma.
In this Gnostic cosmogony, the material world is often viewed as a realm of ignorance and illusion, created by the ignorant ruler Yaldabaoth. The human soul, which originates from the divine realm, becomes entrapped within the material body. The goal of Gnostic salvation is to liberate the soul from its material entanglements and return it to the divine Pleroma.
Another Nag Hammadi text, the "Origin of the World," presents a similar cosmogonic narrative. It describes the creation of the world by various archons, with Yaldabaoth as a central figure. The text emphasizes the flawed and arrogant nature of the archons and their attempts to control humanity. It underscores the importance of spiritual knowledge (gnosis) as a means of transcending the limitations imposed by the archons and the material world.
Gnostic cosmogony, as reflected in the Nag Hammadi texts, challenges traditional religious views on creation and the nature of the divine. The emphasis on hidden knowledge, the flawed creator deity, and the dualistic contrast between the material and divine realms distinguishes Gnostic perspectives from mainstream religious beliefs. The Nag Hammadi library thus provides a valuable glimpse into the rich tapestry of ancient religious thought and the diversity of ideas that existed in the formative years of Christianity.

It is the nature of the All in One in All to function/serve as a diversified unity of potential, eternally actualizing as a unified diversity or Uni-verse.
