Josh was spot on with regards to the cost of living. We lived in El Salvador as substitute teachers, who are paid half salary, but even at $2200 for two people we lived an incredible life. Had we taken the jobs we were offered in Honduras our salaries would have been doubled, housing and a car provided, two round trip tickets home each year, plus our daughter’s education would have been paid for. Amazing!

One of the options for living in Portugal permanent or short term to permanent is buying a boat. The cost is far less than a apartment and the salability is perhaps better. Most marinas are centrally located close to downtown. I have thought about this option. You might consider a You Tube on "boat living" or marinas in the Algarve. Know Algarve well and one of the best options for sunny living in Europe. Randall/Florida

Thanks, Kathy. A lot of people that only live in their home country think about chasing a larger income, but at the end of the day, if you don't save it to invest it, you don't have much in the end. So once we started living abroad, we realized, we were making far less than our friends back in the US, but we were saving the same or more. Then we started to get better jobs and such and our monthly savings grew to where we could start to invest and then those investments grew. You mention graffiti in Faro. Some things I look for in youtube videos when I am trying to get a feel for what a place is like are how much graffiti there is and how many of the houses have bars on the windows/doors. I've been surprised at how much graffiti is all over the place in the Portuguese cities. But not as much armor on windows as other places.
My premise has been that graffiti = bored youth who don't have employment and so will be getting into all kinds of trouble. In other words, graffiti = high incidence of petty crime. The barred windows/doors idea is obvious - why put bars on windows/doors if you don't fear break-ins?
However, maybe there are just a lot of artistic people in Faro and they are constantly painting any surface that is handy. These dreamers wouldn't dare conk you on the head and rob you so they can score....

@@ExpatsEverywhere OK. Just to keep my Devil's Advocate role intact, then why the hell does the City of Faro or wherever let years old tag defacement stay up? I'm not picking on Portugal - there's tagging everywhere. Most everywhere in the US, though, if it's on public property you will see City crews scrubbing it off or painting over it within days. Or taggers doing it as part of their community service in lieu of jail time.
I'm not going to say anything else about graffiti in Portugal. You can't deny it looks like shit, though.
