Dan Uggla's low BABiP was due to the extreme shifting that other teams were deploying against him. His high BABiP after was because he started to pull the ball less. BABiP is a very misunderstood stat that most people always attribute to luck. But luck is just a part of it, not the whole story.
I think it might be less luck for hitters with timing down well enough to shoot for the gaps, fewer fly outs more line drives, and those that aim to hit bloopers over the infield for singles like Ichiro, and quick to first. More luck for sluggers and those that just swing at the ball and hope for the best.

My favorite part of the streak is that it we all thought it ended after Game 14. After the game had ended, the official scorer changed an error to a hit, and it kept the streak alive. Another weird oddity with his streak.
There was a game during DiMaggio's streak where the official scorer gave him a base hit on what was clearly an error. The guy later admitted in an interview that he only scored it a hit because he didn't want to have to deal with any crap for being the person responsible for ending the streak.

I’m a Braves fan an I love Uggla that man ran out every ground ball and I’ve always loved that about players an he’s the best I’ve seen do it. He never gave up and got errors a few times because of his runs.

Such a streaky hitter. Used to drive me absolutely nuts as a Braves fan and it drove management nuts because he actually got benched for Prado in 2012. Brutal

To add on to this, only two second baseman have ever hit for 300+ homeruns for their career in the MLB. Jeff Kent and Robinson Cano. For reference, you’d have to go to the seventh highest mark for career homers by a right fielder (Larry Walker!) to see someone closely. And even then Walker has him beat by nine home runs. Uggla went to high school in my hometown so at a young age I first started caring about the mlb but I was a fan uggla fan. But ever since he got traded to the Braves I have stayed a Braves fan even when they let him go.
I was sitting in the right field seats to hear a fan heckling Uggla with a very audible shout after the boos had died down of, "Go back to Florida!" On that day, the streak began.
Good stuff. I remember Uggla playing for the Braves back then. I didn't pay as much attention to baseball back then as I do now. Watching the Braves in the last few years at Turner field was excruciating. I bought a dan uggla jersey and the day that it arrived at my house was the day that he started his hitting streak.. so i think it was because of me that his streak started.
Uggla was unbelievable during this streak. And it wasn’t a bunch of 1 for 4’s or 1 for 5’s. He was having multihit games with extra base hits and home runs. He was pretty much the best player in baseball for about 2 months.

I grew up a Brewer fan and even went to a Baseball Card convention where Rob Deer was signing autographs during his days in Milwaukee. As a life long Braves fan 40 years this year. I watched this all in real time and was baffled by his streak the entire time. But it never redeemed him in the eyes of my fandom and I’m glad they got rid of his Uggla ass.
Damn you’d think those shots of his homers were taken during covid….nope. That’s just Miami baseball. There literally is not market for it there which is kind of baffling considering it’s Latin American heritage and their love of the game.
Man, that was a great hitting streak. Signing him to an extension was a huge mistake, but this hitting streak alone saved it from being one of the biggest blunders in Braves history.
I'm a Braves fan, and I vividly remember the game that broke his streak. He was robbed of a hit on an amazing over-the-shoulder-catch by the Cubs' Darwin Barney, who sprinted with his back to the plate to barely catch it.
Dan Uggla's low BABiP was due to the extreme shifting that other teams were deploying against him. His high BABiP after was because he started to pull the ball less.

Thanks for not going to the World Series.
I saw him play in highschool he was a beast.
I grew up a Brewer fan and even went to a Baseball Card convention where Rob Deer was signing autographs during his days in Milwaukee. It's insane how similar Dan Uggla's season in 2013 was to Rob Deer's in 1991. Let's compare the 2.
BA: Uggla .179 Deer .179
AB: Uggla 448 Deer 448
Hits: Uggla 80 Deer 80
SO's: Uggla 171 Deer 175
HR's Uggla 22 Deer 25
BB's: Uggla 77 Deer 89
RBI: Uggla 55 Deer 64
OBP: Uggla .309 Deer .314
His name is Dan Uggla!!!
great video too, amazing story (even though I remember hating this as a Phillies fan) and I loved the depth of research
Hanley and Dan were my favorite duo up the middle during that time
As a life long Braves fan 40 years this year. I watched this all in real time and was baffled by his streak the entire time. But it never redeemed him in the eyes of my fandom and I’m glad they got rid of his Uggla ass.
🤣🤣🤣i commented to someone else about how i used to yell in stadium he couldnt hit a beach ball
Dan Uggla, Mr. Forearms himself
3:39 what a remarkable infield that was
Damn you’d think those shots of his homers were taken during covid….nope. That’s just Miami baseball. There literally is not market for it there which is kind of baffling considering it’s Latin American heritage and their love of the game.
I NEED a big fat long form video collaboration between foolish, jolly olive and yourself sir. 2 hours minimum.
Man, that was a great hitting streak. Signing him to an extension was a huge mistake, but this hitting streak alone saved it from being one of the biggest blunders in Braves history.
If I'm remembering correctly, Frank Wren was the GM who signed Uggla to the Braves. It was the beginning of the end for Frank.
Holy cow! I remember this!! What a weird streak. Maybe Dan took some of that Felix Felicitous potion from Professor Slughorn’s potions class? Lol!
I'm a Braves fan, and I vividly remember the game that broke his streak. He was robbed of a hit on an amazing over-the-shoulder-catch by the Cubs' Darwin Barney, who sprinted with his back to the plate to barely catch it.
BABIP caught up to him
I remember watching baseball tonight and sportscaster and they would always say "im on the dan uggla wrist curl program, 50 sets of 50 with 50s"
Jackie Bradley Jr and his career .228 average, (not to mention .163 average in 2021) came one game short - he had a 29 game streak in 2016
