    Simply put, this is the best interview I’ve done to date. It helps that band biographer Richard Campbell and I were faced with a woman who was ready to come clean, to be so vulnerable, so funny….and SO RAW. During Part 1 of this without-precedent 16-hour interview, the legendary singer and actress from The Mamas & The Papas tells it exactly like it is, in between rating everything the band’s ever released.
    In Part 1, we’re treated to…
    * An in-depth exploration of the group’s very first acid trip together;
    * A glimpse into Michelle’s intense hatred toward one of The Mamas & The Papas’ biggest ever hits;
    * And in all likelihood, the most mythologically crazy backstory in rock history.

    My Step-dad a Mamas and Papas fan, he was just into the music though. Not the counterculture. He spent the 60's working as a printer in San Antonio, Texas and his dad was a cop.
    My mom though, she's actually from Spanish Harlem, she didn't know M & P had a version. She remembers the
    original, but she definitely remembers California Dreamin and Monday, Monday. Actually, The Mamas and the Papas seem to be where a lot of people in both the Black and Latino communities remember before becoming more insular. Janis Joplin finally came to fill the void in 68. For the Black community 67 was the year of James Brown.

      I'm also A Safe in my Garden defender. Yes, it is sadder and more morbid, it's also what was happening. It's great that Michelle had a beautiful Summer of Love. For the rest of us it was a summer of riots. The biggest one being in Detroit, the home of Motown. It was then followed by riots in Spanish Harlem, though the news and President Johnson reported it as Harlem. My dad was caught in the middle of that one. My godmother who was nine was trapped in her basement. My mom had moved to Queens, but heard about it on the news.
      Then to add to the Summer of riots, Vietnam got worse. Despite all the talk of the war will be over by June. People were pissed, The Good Vibrations were gone and most people didn't even get the chance to feel them. Last but not least, this comes direct from my parents and what research I could find, the relationship between the Counterculture and the Black community was fractured. Pretty sure Hippies were no longer welcome at the Apollo and James Brown wasn't coming to Sunset Strip. It wasn't a nice time, it was never really a nice time, but now there wasn't any hiding it. Safe in My Garden is addressing that and acknowledging it. One of the few M & P songs to do that. Yeah, it's not a nice song, but it wasn't a nice moment.
      Then Black Power like the Hippies was mostly a youth movement. The very ones the Hippies wanted the most. They were heartbroken 💔 😥
