Professor Foner is a national treasure. I wish all of our elected officials in Washington were required to pass his class on Reconstruction. My guess is only 20 percent could turn in an adequate blue book exam.
Eric Foner is a Marxist. Notice he ignores the Corwin Amendment where Lincoln is going to make slavery permanent in the south. He ignores the Hampton Rhodes conference where Lincoln said he could derail the 13 amendment if the south lays down their arms and comes back in the union. Lincoln was advocate for shipping the slaves back to Africa. Lincoln stated the slaves could "root hog or die." Lincoln was a Henry Clay Whig that represented railroads and special interest. Foner likes central power. Anyone who increases the central power of the government he fawns over. He is a revisionist historian who believes that history should be used to achieve political goals. Lincoln killed over a million people and centralized the power of the government on behalf of special interest. He projects presentism from today on the past. A good historian seeks to understand the past in the time in which occurred not through a modern lens. His buzzword is equality like in the movie " Fist they came for my Father." When they constantly use this word equality what does this mean? How would we know when we get there? A hundred people in a room room would have a different interpretation of equality. Marxism uses vague terminology to justify greater consolidation of power in government under the guise of equality.
Eric Foner best delivers, in his marvelous New York accent, the complex challenges Lincoln had to balance. In short, what made Lincoln so remarkable. The contemporary fashion of mindless inflexible purity tests fails to even try to capture Lincoln's genius. His harshest critics have no interest in that. They only want to feel good about themselves. Pity they only end up looking like fools.

Clay was a slave owner himself and there is no doubt he had low vision of enslaved people. He only opposed slavery because he knew that it will eventually tear the nation apart. On his death bed, he proposed Compromise of 1850, perhaps more than any other law, the Kansas Nebraska Act made the civil war inevitable because it gave slave states unprecedented power to impose their laws over the laws of other states. Thus the states' rights argument is the frivolous thing in the context of secession and the civil war.

Lincoln was anti-slavery - meaning he supported a politics aimed at ending slavery - but, at least before the war, was not an abolitionist, meaning he did not support the immediate end of slavery with no compensation.
