There is so much interesting in the world to be explored. I’m being safe, Dan thank you! I always say, knock on wood, but I’ve traveled the world with a big DSLR plus microphone on top which I have literally strapped onto my hand almost the entire time I’m out filming. For the last 5 years. And I’ve never had a problem. I like to trust people wherever possible, and it’s worked out a majority of the time. Of course, I have been aware of many, many, many scammers in some places haha but they’re usually easy to sniff out
In Pakistan you have been greeted with friendly smiles everywhere you go. How does this compare to other places in the world? Does it seem like people in what might be considered a poorer country to be more open and friendly compared to “richer” countries?
Great questions as always, Mark. I’ve heard people say that many times, and as I’ve traveled the world, I’ve listened to people say time and time again how a certain country has the friendliest people. Or the “poorer countries” have the happiest people. But to me, it’s not that simple. There are different aspects to happiness and friendliness. There’a hospitality, kindness, interest, talkativeness, politeness, as a few examples. So it’s a very difficult answer! Some of the things I’ve heard many times: California people are very nice - but it’s more of a politeness in the service industry for example, how we’ll say hello, how are you, thank you so much, and do it all with a smile. But then, that could be a little fake. There are the “3rd world countries” where people seem to smile a lot at us as tourists, because they’re interested in meeting us. And we see an excited version of their day to day. And true, I think we can learn from these people that money doesn’t buy happiness. Some people with more money are the most miserable. But then there’s somewhere like Ireland or New Zealand, where people are nice as can be, polite, and they obviously have a very comfortable living situation. So, my long and winded answer is that I am not sure. But I do know this. People here and on this side of the world are overly hospitable, welcoming, and they put a smile on their face for you. They seem to be happy even without the comforts of life that we have become reliant on for our own.
Regarding Pakistan, I can tell, what is behind all the kindness and respect we give to a tourist. It is Quran's words that a guest in your home is a blessing of God. As much we can make our guest happy and at ease, that much God would be pleased. Love & Respect from Lahore
Fitting in is a great idea! It was back in the late 70s as well! Same faces, same smiles, same curiosity and safer for men...wish it was not so but you can experience mostly males outside in the smaller villages. Western women were such a novelty...and not in a good way many times! Enjoy every experience!
@@TheTravelbum There are many reasons of it. One important is that USUALLY men earn n women run the domestic chores so they are usually busy at home and would only go outside for either shopping, grocery and outing with family. There are bazars and malls that are always full of women. Men on the other hand work outside so you can see them on road. Then there are timings, after and before office or educational hours, you can see women commuting around to go to or come back from their work place or education institutions. There is another reason of seeing less women on roads is that casual roaming on the roads is not a thing common in women.
If you go north ,you will see women cover up more and even less women as it’s very conservative and women mingling in crowds of males needlessly is not encouraged. They have their own social lives amongst family and friends only . I was always escorted by the males of the family on longer outings out .
I would frequent a store in Florida that was owned by a very nice man from India. His very handsome son would often be there working and would take the hand basket from me to carry for me and follow me around. One day the Dad came outside the store with me and informed me that "Mother and I approve of you. You are not like the other girls around here". I wasn't exactly sure what he was talking about and it wasn't until days later that I realized that he and his wife were arranging for me to marry their son. I have never looked my age, the son was probably in his 30's, I was 50 and past child bearing age. I'm also a very devout Christian and I'm pretty sure they are Hindu. I still sometimes wonder what my life would look like right now had I accepted and been accepted after my age and child bearing situation was known. : )
I hope it does haha. Because I use it as an easy sign of “hey this is good, we’re good, I like this, we’re friendly” and I feel like it’s known most of the world that westerners use it that way at least
