The best example of a callsign i've heard of has to be the crown prince of Denmark. Next in line for the throne, fully trained special forces operator, and they call him Pingu, because his drysuit got filled with water and he looked like a penguin running around.

Wikipedia claims there have been 5 USS Idahos in the USN:
USS Idaho (1864) was a wooden steam sloop later converted to a full-rigged sailing ship
USS Idaho (BB-24), a Mississippi-class battleship, was launched on 9 December 1905 and was sold to Greece on 30 July 1914
USS Idaho (SP-545) was a motor boat acquired by the US Navy in June 1917 and returned to her owner 30 November 1918
USS Idaho (BB-42) was a New Mexico-class battleship launched on 30 June 1917, saw action in World War II, and was sold for scrap 24 November 1947
USS Idaho (SSN-799) is a Virginia-class submarine currently authorized for construction

Just to add more depth to the naming... States had to bid or request to put their name on a ship. This usually involves raising a lot of money to help pay for the ship. Thus states had the biggest ships because they can raise more money. Cities also do this, usually with smaller ships requiring less sponsorship. Like USS Dallas is an attack sub, while USS Texas was a super dreadnaught. Thats how it used to ve. It's kind of no longer done that way. Without this kind of fund raising, the military will honor former notable politicians presidents or war heroes, like USS john F Kennedy.

5:25 For the US Army, callsigns are derived from the callsign of the unit itself with an added postfix of some number or name that denotes their role within the unit. For example, when I was a 2LT fire support officer for D CO 1-72AR, the callsign for Delta Company was Dragon. Since I was fire support guy I would go by Dragon Guns on the radio, but we eventually got a new company commander who then changed it Dragon 8. The armored platoon leaders were Dragons 1, 2, and 3, for the 3 platoon, the XO was Dragon 5, Commander Dragon 6, First Sergeant Dragon 7.
You can go a little fancier with specific information about who within the callsign is talking. For example I could state "this is Dragon 8A" or "Dragon 8 Actual" to specify it is literally me talking. But my NCO could hop on the net and state "this is Dragon 8N" or "Dragon 8 November" to identify himself as my NCO.
I know pilots have their TAC name bestowed upon them by their buddies, but within the Army the only time I have personally seen TAC/Callsigns given by others is in a informal setting with no true applicable substance (like during unit functions - aka parties, dinners, welcoming/farewell get-togthers) and not during any tactical environment.
I do remember, while I was still stationed in Fort Bliss if I remember correctly, that there was a directive to vett all of the callsigns within the various divisions of the Army to clear out redundancy. Sometimes it can get confusing because there are popular unit callsigns that were associated with more than one unit. I know of an artillery battery that goes by the callsign Bulldog, but one of the brigades also goes by Bulldog. I forget what Bulldog Battery was redesignated to. I was personally part of two different "Iron Brigades" 1st ABCT, 2nd ID in Korea and 2nd ABCT, 1st AD Fort Bliss, TX... sometimes the redundancy can be confusing, but as long as the names within the Division are unique it doesn't become much of a problem.

@@albertthompson5808 No one was assigned that call sign within the organization. The most likely individual that would have been assigned that for an armor company would probably be the supply sergeant, but at the time we didn't need him to have a callsign. Should we have needed him on tactical operations the commander would have probably given him an ad hoc callsign if not Dragon 4...

see the "ship on fire, just put water on it" thing kind of happened I believe it was USS Laffey a fletcher class destroyer was set on fire from stem to stern whilst the force was under air attack and what did they do, well simple, the captain took command and got the ship behind the battleship south dakota I believe, who herself was a full speed because of the air attack, and used the wake of the battleship to douse the fire on the ship. I will try and find the battle and ships just to double check.

I'm not sure if you've ever really reacted to his content, but Rimmy Downunder has some great Arma III Videos and some of them can be real funny while still often being really well coordinated. He once had his team play in a tournament against another team, where his side of the PVP match was generally expected to just be a difficult challenge for the other team to roll over during the multi-hour match, but through really good psychological tactics and creative thinking he and those under his command dragged the other team through the mud the entire time, leading to an ultimate victory. He was playing as Opfor (terrorists) fighting against Blufor (US/NATO Forces) where his team had a numerical disadvantage in respawn points and significant lack of militarized vehicles, and with his help his team was able to put up such a fight a good number of the opposing team literally rage-quit/had so low morale that they were barely able to keep playing through the multiple hours of the PVP operation. There was a good bit of funny RP with them playing as terrorists, and their victory was such a surprise to them as most on the team Opfor generally expected that they were going to have a fun engaging game but still loose due to Blufor's numerical advantage. I go into this degree of detail because I don't even know if the vod of this operation even still exists, and if it does I doubt you'd react to a ~7+ hour stream vod lol. I believe it was Arma 3: CCO #7 (Coalition Community Operation) it was a 100 player team PVP match. PVP in arma is always a little fucky as one team will always lose, but the Blufor team in this operation was SO angry with the success and tactics of Opfor, but they really played like terrorists, and used every advantage they could find, including trying to sow genuine terror/psychological tactics (planting ungodly amounts of landmines to make blufor extremely paranoid about leaving their base to go anywhere even with their anti-landmine vehicle, as well as blowing ~80% of their supply of anti-air rockets in the first 5-10 minutes of the ~7 hour match just to make them THINK that they had a near infinite supply of them, so they'd be too paranoid to launch more aircraft, making them genuinely afraid to use one of their biggest advantages until much later when they realized they barely had any anti-air rockets left. Rimmy didn't command Opfor, but he still managed to make his own sort of team with his unit, the recording of his perspective was absolutely amazing, a little dull at times especially at night time as his team didn't have access to nightvision (unless they were scavenged from a Blufor corpse who did) but seeing a team turn what was an expected loss into a spirited victory was very entertaining, as was all the terrorist/insurgent roleplay in the quiet times with the other players on his team.

I feel like Kip would appreciate several of The Mighty Jingles' navy stories. The one that immediately comes to mind is the one where nobody wanted to accept the invitation by a formerly soviet farm to host some of the sailors on their shore leave but not sending anyone would have been insulting so they allowed some people who were confined to ship for months to have a day out as long as it was to that farm.

The USS Texas BB 35 on D-Day plus 5ish was the only ship able to hit its targets after the allies moved extremely far inland.
It did not normally have the range to hit that far, so the captain ordered to flood one side of his ship, forcing his guns to elevate higher than they were capable of, and it worked.
The Texas was built during World War One, and it still exists today, currently in dock for repairs.
Badger talks about it in another of his World of Warships videos. You should watch them all to find it.

The 5 SMAW shots a day is more of a safety thing for protecting the user. Concussive overpressure is a really jarring experience and overdoing it can lead to some nasty physical and psychological problems in the future. Physical problems like permanent hearing damage and psychological problems like memory loss, and the like. Sure you can do more than 5 a day, but you risk giving yourself medical issues that can and will seriously fuck your life up. It aint like TV where the RPG goes relatively slow leaving a nice white smoke trail behind the rocket. Firing a shoulder mounted rocket is a lot like a firing a huge rifle, and those rocket fly FUCKIN FAST, like as fast as a bullet. Its a BOOM 💥 not a FWOOSH 💨.

In WWII Aircraft Carriers were mostly named after battles and key words in US history, Battleships were named after states, Light and Heavy Cruisers were named after cities, towns and Territories, Destroyers were named after notable people in US History and Submarines were named after species of sealife
Today Aircraft Carriers are named after Presidents ( with a couple exceptions) Cruisers are named after battles Destroyers are named after Medal of Honor Recipients or alumni ships and Submarines are named after cities and states depending on the type
