I recently gave a plant root rot for the first time - a silver satin scindapsis, I think underwatering too - and I got lucky that it happened with such a small plant. I just rinsed off the dirt and popped him into my aquarium's propagation station next to the pothos cuttings. The Amano shrimp ate away the decaying ends and the warm oxygenated water is taking care of the rest. I went away on vacation for ten days and came back to new roots with roots! (Technically it's my second root rot, but the first was a newly rooted cutting sold to me in a 12" pot with no drainage, so I'm not claiming that one.)
I had a baby jose buono but he got big and reverted 😢 So happy to see yours is happy and healthy. You're so good to teach us all these valuable learnings❤
I’m so glad that you reinforced how a moss pole is your insurance to protect yourself from root rot and stem rot and not just lose an entire plant! An “aha “ moment, Lots of love ❤️ Ginger
I have chopped a couple of my plants on a pole and they do just fine without connecting to the base pot. Thank you for giving me that tip and courage. Love, love your channel
I always admire how much time you take to actually show plant behaviours, even going from weeks to months to sometimes even years. I haven't seen anyone document plant journeys as detailed as you do. This is so informative and really thank you so much for taking the time and showing us all these steps in ways that really helps us all! 🥰
I’ve currently got a plant pot with moss pole sitting on a heat mat with a strong direct grow light, same thing, over Christmas forgot to water moss poles and the moss got hydrophobic, then the pot sat in water for a day, hope I caught it in time! If not, I hope there’s enough roots in my pole as well, I think so, should be ok
I’m using moss poles from watching your videos. 😊 Also overcoming the fear of aroid mix because I can’t exactly put a chopstick into it and see if it needs water.
I'm super bummed. For some reason I decided to look below the pot of my Florida ghost and smelled root rot - not the full stench, just a bit. It's been planted in it for like 1,5 months, but it was already attached to the pole - a 3D printed one. Unfortunately I can't follow your steps so I'm worried I'll have to take it all out and clean it out, which will be a job for the ages. But good on you for solving your problem so quickly and effectively!
Hi Jan, I wanted to ask you again because you misread my last question (which is totally fine of course, god knows I sometimes do that haha)... I know you have moss poles in the south facing room, who rely on your mother grow lights. Then you also have moss poles by the rear window who rely solely on natural light, right? I wondered if you see growth stop completely in winter in both those spots, or do the poles that get more constant, artificial light keep going for longer in the coldest months than those who are dependant on sunlight?
Hi Jan, always love your content. I also have a Philodendron Jose Buono that might be affected by root rot since it has hardly done anything since I repotted it some time ago :/ Might have to look into it. Another thing: Lately I am really annoyed by RUclipss new AI auto-dubbing feature. As a German viewer, I always get the newest videos (yours amongst others) with AI-generated translations into German. It sounds horrible!! At first I thought, oh, what a funny way to start your video... wait... this is no joke, this was not done on purpose. RUclips does this for me without asking? Now I have to manually change the language to original for EVERY single video. It is really frustrating. So sad that RUclips doesn't give an option to turn this off as viewer. There are lots of viewers out there who speak more than one language and like to view content like yours in original language.
What wire mesh do you use for your moss poles and where do you get it from? I have plastic moss poles but the wire looks better. Sorry, just saw the end where you advise theres a video, ill check it out
do you actually replace the moss in your poles every now and then and if yes, how do you do that? I imagine it's a giant hassle filling the pole with moss while integrating the already grown roots into the moss at the same time.
I was wondering the same thing. I think it could if the moss was really packed tight but if not the moss would have enough air flow so the roots wouldn’t rot. Also the water isn’t pooling in the moss pole so that would help too. That seems correct but not 100% one way or another. Would love to know if that’s right or not.

Wow! Very fast recovery. Those roots really love the tree fibre.💚
Such a great guide for root rot! I know when I started with plants a couple years ago finding root rot felt so daunting lol
Same !!:)

The clear pots really help as well :)
i've found a moisture meter VERY useful.
@@eja5799Not very helpful for a chunky mix though. They're not accurate in these kinds of mixes.

It’s from Bunnings :) the ‘Jacks’ brand :)
Width of the square openings in the mesh are between 1-1,5cm :)
@sydneyplantguy thank you
Thanks Jan you are the best😁
Are moss poles 💯 necessary?? Laurie ❤Canada 🇨🇦
do you actually replace the moss in your poles every now and then and if yes, how do you do that? I imagine it's a giant hassle filling the pole with moss while integrating the already grown roots into the moss at the same time.
Thanks.
Happy to help :)
How would you fix root rot for alocascia specifically? Since those don’t grow on poles, one of mine I suspect current has rot!😭
Cut the rot and reroot in water
But, could the moss pole also create a higher probability for root rot, due to overwatering?
I was wondering the same thing.
I think it could if the moss was really packed tight but if not the moss would have enough air flow so the roots wouldn’t rot. Also the water isn’t pooling in the moss pole so that would help too. That seems correct but not 100% one way or another.

As usual I'm holding out to watch on "RUclips TV" all I can say is root rot on any plant is no bueno* 🥴
Proof is in the pudding or potting? :D❤
