    My favourite album of 1965:
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
I like Rubber Soul too, although there are too many mediocre tracks on it and one which is just awful,
"Michelle". On the other hand, it contains "In My Life", one of my Top 5 Beatles tracks, simply beautiful. Glad to have the all analog mono reissue of Rubber Soul from the "The Beatles In Mono" box set though. Sounds great and much better than the ping pong stereo version I had bought in the 90s.
    Other great albums of 1965:
Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home
The Rolling Stones - Out of Our Heads
The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones No. 2
The Beach Boys - Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!)
The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
    Otis Redding - Otis Blue
The Beatles - Help! (the better Beatles album that year)

You are right about Michelle. "Girl" is another one. Highway 61 is probably better but we all know that Pete likes Styx and Toto and hates Bob

"...but we all know that Pete likes Styx and Toto and hates Bob"
Well, life is full of mysteries, isn’t it? At least cheesy AOR or progressive rock had not been invented yet in 1965, or hard rock and heavy metal for that matter. Soon enough we might be faced with "The Grand Illusion" or "Leftoverture", how easy to bear is Rubber Soul compared to those albums...

There is no denying the greatness of Rubber Soul. A fine choice. I believe an arguement can be made for Highway 61 by Bob Dylan. For the mere fact that it includes the song that changed everything: "Like A Rolling Stone". It's importance can't be diminished.

    • @juzek1958
      @juzek1958 4 года назад +1

True for his songwriting but as far as his performing I'll pass. Give me Highway 61 Revisited performed by Johnny Winter. Bob Dylan is best served performed by others.

    • @gregusmc2868
      @gregusmc2868 4 года назад

juzek1958 I kinda hate to agree with you on that but I do. I saw him live in about 1986 or 87-too many concerts too long ago-but I remember coming out of that show mightily disappointed. You could tell he didn’t really want to be there. Played everything so fast he’d be halfway through the song before you could even recognize what he was playing. I understand artists who want to “change things up” especially after playing the same songs for, even back then what, 35 years? But still, it would have been great to see him put a little effort into his performance. I still agree that album was a game-changer and I am a huge fan of his studio versions of most of that stuff. Now that I think about it, I saw him AND The Band, co-headline with the Dead in 1986 so I’ve seen him twice. (He was much better with Levon and the crew backing him!)

    • @lourossi3446

Saw Dylan at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT early 90's. 3 1/2 hours of torture. Just the absolute worst. That said, his lack of proficiency as a live performer doesn't matter in this discussion.
This is about the best album of 1965 & Highway 61 was a gamechanger.

I saw him at the Palace Theater in Columbus Ohio so I can almost forgive him for not being “up” for that gig but where you saw him?! Wow. I’m sad FOR you. At least when I say him with Robbie, Levon, Garth, Rick, and Richard-AND the Grateful Dead-he seemed to be having a good time! Something as simple as a “Hello!” or a genuine smile is something!!

I'd go with Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." Next in line would be Dylan's "Bringing It All Back Home." This in spite of being far more of a Beatles fan than Dylan fan. "Rubber Soul" would probably be my top non-Dylan album of the year, or perhaps "A Charlie Brown Christmas" by Vince Guaraldi. Honorable mentions: "Mr. Tambourine Man" by The Byrds, "My Generation" by The Who and "Help!" by The Beatles.

I wasn't into jazz when I was a kid in 1965, but in retrospect, and now thinking it's a magnificent album, my top pick of '65 is Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." I've always been a Beatles fan, and Rubber Soul is great, but Coltrane's '65 release is one of my favorite albums of all time. My runner up is Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited"--the Beatles were progressing into the genius band they soon became, but Dylan made a flying leap into greatness with "Highway 61."

1965 was probably the first year in my life that I consciously listened to music. However, given that I was just six at the time I would not be able to recall whether I heard a song in that year or later. Albums were not a thing for me, just songs on the radio. I loved the Byrds, Animals, Kinks, Rolling Stones and some others. Bob Dylan fascinated me like no other. My mother just shook her head while my father played LPs already, jazz, John Coltrane and Miles Davis and others. I was way too young for that but started to explore his kind of music later. When I was fifteen, we both had a common artist to appreciate, Miles Davis. 1965 was a great year in music and spawned many great albums (albums that worked as albums, I mean).
My top album 1965 (maybe even the top album of the 60s?) has lost nothing of its power until today:
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited

Beach Boys Today ("skiss me baby"). Runner-up is a toss-up between Bob Dylan's two great albums, Bringing it all Back Home (with Subterranean homesick blues) and Highway 61 Revisited.

Rubber Soul is a good choice
My Runner Ups are the 2 Dylan albums that came out that same year:
    “Bringing It All Back Home”
    “Highway 61 Revisited”

Well.....you could still tell us some of your other top choices too. Anyway, absolutely gotta go with "Rubber Soul" too, but I love some of the other albums people have mentioned here -- the two great Dylan albums, "A Love Supreme", "Maiden Voyage", the first Butterfield Blues Band, these are all outstanding.....

I agree with rubber soul. It's the beginning of the Beatles growing up. An absolute classic

A shoot out between Rubber Soul and Highway 61 Revisited. Both are brilliant. My winner probably changes on a day by day basis. Otis Blue is also great.
This is going to get much harder for me when we get to the 1970s.

No argument with your No. 1, but my runner up (apologies, Pete!) has to be one of Dylan’s - probably Bringing It All Back Home. It was, retrospectively at least, a great year to be alive!

I also think that Rubber Soul is a no-brainer. The two Dylan albums are both great, but all the other interesting bands are just finding their (album) feet. The main medium was the Single, not the Album at the time (and picking Singles would be far more difficult because there were many great ones in 65). Rubber Soul is also better than the summer release of the Help album (containing Help, Ticket to Ride and Yesterday, amongst others).
Also: Otis Blue by Otis Redding.

The first album I ever bought. Well I got my mum to buy it although it was my money. She worked in a cinema and did Saturday morning kid's pictures. The record shop was on the next corner so she popped in after work and got it for me. The Stones, Out Of Our Heads- the UK version rather than the US version. They were still mainly reliant on songs by other artists but Jagger / Richards contributed three songs and Nanker Phelge (the group) one the brilliantly titled The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man.
Runner-up, Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. A borrowed album that I somehow managed to warp. That resulted in a well deserved whack when I returned it to the owner at my school. Just a totally different kind of hypnotic music first listened to on a hot afternoon. I should mention My Generation and Rubber Soul but both came to me a year or so later.

Great show, Pete and I look forward to it. Thumbs up to Rubber Soul with honorable mentions to "My Generation" and "Out of Our Heads". A couple of years ago I found a website that lists every album released each year and it ranks them by critical response. I've been prowling the lists for for hidden gems ever since.

I had to think about this. My list of favorites would definitely also include 'Rubber Soul," but also the Byrds' "Mr. Tambourine Man," John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," and Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited," all desert island discs for me. Others I love from that year, in no particular order:
"Song for My Father" by Horace Silver
"The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra"
    "ESP" by Miles Davis
"Spiritual Unity" by Albert Ayler Trio
    "Idle Moments" by Grant Green
    "Maiden Voyage" by Herbie Hancock
"Out of Our Heads" by Rolling Stones
"Hoodoo Man Blues" by Junior Wells
    The Pretty Things - s/t
    "Dialogue" - Bobby Hutcherson
"Here are the Sonics" - the Sonics

Great choice. There were some special albums released that year (i.e. Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited, Coltrane's A Love Supreme, and Otis Redding's Otis Blue). But I have to say that you selected the clear best from that year. Rubber Soul seems to get better each time I listen to it.

Good choice Pete. Fascinating to see some of the comments on here and remember just how many great releases there were in 1965. This is a really good idea for a new series so I'll look forward to watching them. Could we also know your shortlist for each year, if it's not asking too much of your time. Many thanks.
