As amazing as this song is, (in fact, you can't find a bad song on this album "Aja") the one you want to listen to is called Black Cow. Steely Dan is pure gold!

This song is relaxing until Wayne Shorter and Steve Gadd comes in on sax & drums and just tear the roof off. This whole album is one of the most superbly engineered albums EVER. Steely Dan is my favorite band. They literally make no bad music.

This is one of the best analog audio recordings ever made. The musicians were chosen for specific songs. Steve Gadd is ridiculous on drums. One of my faves. The part where he taps his sticks together at the end of the first drum break and where he goes to the ride cymbal at the end always give me stink face. Gets me every time.

Steely Dan is Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the rest of the musicians change by song. One of the best albums ever made. This is the band your band listen to

  • @dcaseng

The amazing thing about this song is that you can't tell where it's going as far as music progression. It's all over the place, and sometimes feels like completely different songs that were grafted together.
It's very complex, but it WORKS!
As appreciated as Steely Dan has become over the years, they are STILL underrated.

Becker and Fagen retired the band from live performances altogether to become a studio-only band, opting to record with a revolving cast of session musicians. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies".

This is about as lushly produced an album as you'll ever hear. They took a LOT of expensive time to make this album sound as smooth and musically unique as it does. Try Reelin' In The Years or
My Old School, or Do It Again. All bangers!

Steely Dan is one of my top three favorite bands. They have a deep catalog of excellent songs. "Aja" is the title song on their best-selling album, but there's a lot more. My suggestions: "Peg," "Home at Last," "Reeling in the Years," "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," "Black Friday," "Pretzel Logic," "Jack of Speed," "The Things I Miss the Most."

"Who is playing the instruments on this!?" You ask.
A Who's Who of every top Seventies sessionman - with each song redone and redone and redone with different studio bands, until Walter and Donald got the perfect version and take.
    For this song, it was:
    - Donald Fagen: lead vocals, synthesizer, police whistle
    - Walter Becker, Denny Dias (who played the guitar solo), and Larry Carlton: guitars
    - Michael Omartian: acoustic piano
    - Joe Sample: electric piano (a first-rank jazz musician rather than a session player, from the Jazz Crusaders)
    - Wayne Shorter: tenor saxophone (another first-rank jazz musician and one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, from Weather Report)
    - Timothy B. Schmit: backing vocals (from the Eagles)
    - Victor Feldman: percussion, vibraphone
    - Chuck Rainey: bass guitar
    - Steve Gadd: drums (while most of his career has been as a sessionman, he's also noted as a fantastic jazz player)

Steely Dan has a lot of great music, a lot lot. Black Cow is a must. But, listen to your subscribers, they know the songs to react to. Peg, Deacon Blues, and Home At Last are all great songs off the Aja album. Walter Becker, and Donald Fagen were the only constants in the band. They had different musicians playing on different songs. Kid Charlemagne, Rikki Don't Lose that Number, Do It Again, and Reeling In the Years are all reaction worthy. Dive deep and enjoy their talent. Peace.

I’m a big Steely fan since 1975, Since you’re a new listener to Steely Dan my I suggest that before you start your podcast, do some research on the band it self. I realize the point you want to capture is your first time hearing the song. I love that! But maybe find out who the band members are before your first listen. That way you can perhaps inform other young listeners to who is playing each instrument. Steve Gadd on drums is a good example. Wishing you success with your podcast, cheers.

Who's playing the instruments? Some of the best musicians on the planet. But it's also what they're playing. Donald and Walter were in charge of that. Also, the mixing and engineering is so clean, you could eat off of it. There are dozens of tracks, some barely loud enough in the mix to hear. But with all that traffic, you can hear the tiniest detail in every one of them.
