Lil Prop - Big Trip (POV Ultralight Flying Movie)

- "LilProp-BigTrip" is the music video ending to Brian FitzGerald's documentary about Ultralight Flying titled "UFM2" (Ultralight Flying Millennium 2). "Lil Prop" is designed to take you along with The Sky Surfer on a low level, mythical Kansas Flight Adventure.
Much of the music video was shot in 2009 with the final section being completed in 2014.
Much effort was made to place cameras at various positions on the airplane in order to give you a sense of "being there".
Special credit goes to Cameraman Jeff Johnson who shot most of the "ground to air" sequences.
In addition to flying the plane and editing the piece, FitzGerald wrote and performed the music under this video.
The uploading of "Lil Prop" will start a "slow release" of the entire "UFM2" movie to RUclips.

Frankly, I do to and have spoken voluminously to that point.
How anyone could watch this video and NOT want to fly is beyond me! Awesome video, this needs to be seen by every young person in the country. We need to inspire a new generation to get into aviation. Great Job!

I had to watch every second. I’ve wanted to fly an ultralight the first time I saw one as a kid probably 35 years ago. Now that I can actually do it I’m going to!!!

I'm actually planning to buy an ultralight kit in the near future (Badland UL-1 - used to be the Kitfox Lite, then the Belite Dragon before that). I'd love to see more interest in the sport, and maybe start a club here in SoCal once I get mine built...

I already have a number of them on my channel. They are different from "Lil Prop" in that they are all shot from the "Point of View" of the airplane with no "ground to air" footage.

Truly inspiring, the plane is an extension of yourself, amazing flying. I first learned to fly at 16 and had my pilots license at 17, unfortunately I didn't really pursue that dream past 200 hours of flight time. Now at 57 I am once again bitten by the bug of flying, and this is exactly the kind of flying I want to do. I'm still in excellent health and watching this may have just helped me to pursue that dream again. I'm beginning to think its not to late, lol...;-) The trick is trying to find some one with experience in my area... (Moab Utah) Will see. You have a new sub :) Thank you Brian for the inspiration.

Thanks, Chuck! I spent a lot of time on that piece. I also wrote and performed the music. I use a Gibson SG Classic, a Taylor acoustic and an Ibanez bass. This stuff was edited with Apple's SoundTrack Pro but I have now switched to Logic Pro.
Oh God! I'm watching this video at just4 years later (an amazingly coincidence ,today is Aug.27 /2018 ha ha !)and I'm now looking for your next vidéo in the UFM2 series. Hope I'll find them in sequence.Flying so close along the rivers inspired me a lot .Thank you .

Bob Garber Thanks, Bob. It took about 3 days to shoot that segment and they were all super. What you wouldn't know from the pictures and music is how nice a huge field of sunflowers like that smells. A huge benefit of sitting out front of the plane is you don't have exhaust in your face and you can smell the flowers, wheat, rivers, etc.
Sunflowers only look like that for about a week so I had to get everything done before their heads turned down.
Wonderful piece of video and music production. Kudo's people, you captured the essence of small craft flyingat it's best.

This is the best ultralight video I have seen. Ground camera is good at getting great shots. Good editor too. Oh and the pilot looked smooth the whole time. Looks like the funnest the thing in the world to do.

PS: I was intending to shoot another movie today but the winds were too high. When they get over 15 mph the wings flex too much and the wingtip cameras are too shakey...

Yes, Brian, Ive been checking some of them out.... I have not flown in 10 years, although I'm rated for SEL. helicopter, and commercial glider. I owned a PDQ, a hang glider, and a kasperwing, among other GA aircraft; I never had the opportunity to fly the PDQ or the kasper. I flew with Mike Jacober in Alaska before he died and loved his trikes. I'd give my right nut these days for even a Weedhopper or almost any UL.... Thanks for your beautiful flying and musically choreographed footage. It really is the best stuff I've ever seen.

Yes, Kansas is a beautiful place. I have a collection of stories I call "Sky Surfing - The Flite Blog™" with a great number of flights around Kansas and Oklahoma already on the web. You can get there by going to my website. Last year I made a flight to Ellinwood and passed Sterling on the way. You can check that one out and see the aerial photos I took along the way. I do have a future plan to fly to Sterling but I need a landing place.
Do you know anyone there with a hay field near the edge of town who would let me land?
If so, send me an email with their name and number. With Winter approaching, the winds will be coming out of the North and that is when I make my Safaris in that direction. This could be "The Season for Sterling".

About 9 years after that movie I shot "Magic Time" with a number of others in between. The key is to be alert, know your limitations, plan your route carefully and maintain your equipment.

My friend just purchased a quicksilver MX with spoilers, it gets a left rolling tendency at 30 miles an hour in taxi test what is the fix for this I'm sure he's tried right rudder
That is a tough one to analyze from a distance. Is your Buddy a pilot? Do you have any Quicksilver dealers near you or guys who are flying Quicksilvers right now? They might be able to help but there are so many things it could be, I am hard pressed to answer.

This is the most beautiful flying video I've ever seen and I've seen thousands. Your flying is remarkable, the music perfect and the video quality totally professional. I've flown many light aircraft, ppgs, gyros, light sport. Your video comes as close to the actual experience of low and slow open air flying as I've seen. Thank you. By the way, where was this shot? I would guess somewhere near the Sacramento River, but just a wild guess

Thanks so much for the accolade! I spent an enormous amount of work on that piece. I also wrote and performed the music. If you were not aware, "Lil Prop" is the final segment in the larger documentary "Ultralight Flying Millennium 2".
Interesting you should mention the Sacramento River. When I lived there I would take inner tube trips down it. But, no, "Lil Prop" was shot entirely in Kansas. The river scenes are the Arkansas River Southeast of Wichita adjacent the town of Mulvane.
The POV (Point Of View) shots in "Lil Prop" were done with a single camera. I had to make a run with the cam in one position on the airplane and then return to mount it in a different spot and make the same run. For the most part this had to be done over a period of many days in addition because about 1/3 of the time the camera would shift or the mount would transmit too much vibration and the shot be no good.
I say all this because over the last couple of years I did a number of pieces of a similar nature but using multiple cameras mounted all over the plane so as to provide a more "real time" finished product. In these I roll 6 to 7 cams all at once and then edit the piece later with music and narration. You might like them, too.
There are three on my channel right now. I put the term "POV" in all the titles so they would be easy to find in a word search.

Very cool I take it you're a farmer checking on your crops all the time just wondering how much does it cost to get involved in something like this and also what's the range on that aircraft what is the weight limit and usually how much does it cost to maintain fuel wise and doing an annual on it really would love to try it

In my opinion the MXL Single seat was the best flying one out of all the quicksilver planes and I've owned or own most of them and flew them all. I wonder if your slightly nose heavy with your seat in that position?

Great video. I can't understand why you don't have many many more views. I fly a Kolb Firefly, and I make a few videos now and then over at channel JWOLFE104, so I know a little about what it takes. You capture the beauty of ultralight flying like no other. I'd love to meet you in person, but Kansas City to you is a bit of a stretch.

Thanks! Yes, I do put a huge amount of effort into these movies. Part of that is because I have been in the commercial video biz for 33 years. "Lil Prop" took a whole Summer and lots of coordination with my "ground" cameraman and location permissions. I had to run through each area many times. I also wrote and recorded the music.
While RUclips seems to thrive on short slapdash "videos", I just don't want to do that. I make movies that I would like to watch. So, I very much appreciate your comment. I know I am hitting the mark when I get a response like yours.
I don't know if you've seen my newer POV efforts but I think you would like them, too. Yesterday I was working on another camera placement to bring the total eyes on board to 7...
You have also discovered a big part of my desire and that is to interest and encourage more guys around the world to embrace Ultralight Flying. I am reading a book about The Wright Brothers and some things that they say about flying are EXACTLY what we are doing in this low speed, low wing loaded flight regime.
What we are doing is very special.
I could really dig more views so please forward links to my stuff to everyone and anyone you think might like them.

It is a Quicksilver MXL. I bought it used and then made numerous modifications to it. Quicksilver has a current design that is similar called The Sport. I would direct you to their website or one of their dealers for a price (air-tech.com) but I would guess a new one is $12K to $14K.

As I was told by a friend, quicksilver is no longer in business. Perhaps due to bankruptcy. Is it true? Secondly, what distance this little bird can fly? 50, 75, 100 miles? Tnx.
The farthest I have gone out is about 100 miles. After fuel, wind is the prime limiter of distance.
One more thing...
For all intents and purposes, Air-Tech (www.air-techinc.com/) is the new Quicksilver. Perhaps when you read this, they will have obtained the right to use the name also.

There were many shots of a straight on view ln your video. Where was that camera? It didn't look, in other segments, that there was a mount installed that could take that video.
It's on a mount but The Sky Surfer is very tricky to do the best he can to keep mounting accoutrements out of his shots. You are one of the few people who even notices what we are talking about. Good job!
thanks Brian,. What video editing software do you use? You have alot of amazing transitions and changing pov of your cameras.
I use Final Cut Pro for video and Logic Pro for music. Sometimes I use After Effects for special compositing. I clean up photos with Photoshop sometimes.
All my stuff is Apple (since 1985). I really like their technology but really, really wish their management would get out of the politics business...

I just bought a (1977?) Volmer Jensen VJ-24W barnfind for $38 bucks ! A diamond in the rough, in need of lots and lots of of restoration and TLC! My first plane.
I asked a guy who uploaded a video to youtube, can it do low and slow and he said yep definitely, and that sealed the deal for me. Well, actually this video of him flying his old one sealed it for me, it floats like a Demoiselle or a Kolb Flyer:

My first build I completed yesterday, which was a trailer hitch for my car to tow it home. Harbor Freight Hitch unit, mounted on Aerostar Farm Windmill frame bar for cross piece off our old windmill (solid galvanized steel... my hitch is probably way stronger than the hardpoints on the car). Used four Grade 8 5/8th bolts. Strong and heavy!

+Brian FitzGerald I bought a JLO 10.2hp RM-252 with it for another $25 bucks, but its not going to be powerful enough to get it off the ground... so I'll use that on some other project I have. The VJ-24W was built with with a 14 hp Yamaha 150, or a McCulloh... but people fit larger 22-25 hp engines on them... looks like they did on mine because they added two extra engine supports not in the design. Im going to try and get an inline 2 cylinder. Haven't decided which one yet... rotax or old cuyuna. Long way off from that point still.
Worked on her today... first step is the undercarriage (which is steel and needs TLC first), then the cockpit, and Ill work my way upward and outward outward part by part, piece by piece, taking off the old paint, restoring every part, replacing every rusty bolt and rivet, and applying intelligence at every point to make some things stronger and safer. Things have come quite a ways since the late 70's. Covering the wings will be last and adding new control cable. Got to get her down to the bare metal first and build her back up again with everything rusty... gone... and a pretty new coat of paint and new bolts and rivets on her. Will have to save up $500 just for new Dacron, which will be the single biggest expense.
Shes actually a lot like a flying go cart... fun to work on... I dont mind at all. It gets me into the club of airplane ownership :-) I now can get into airshows free with her :-) Going to have to make a lightweight enclosed trailer to store her in so I can take her places to fly somewhere other than the local airport...

I'd be working on her 8 hours a day right now, but unfortunately I have other grrr things I have to do and am also tapped out on money. So she will have to wait until spring/summer. But I can't resist sometimes and I start cleaning her up anyway even though I should be doing other things. I want to drag her into my living room right now and get busy, I'd be done with her by spring if I could. When you do something you enjoy and don't mind, you work fast, like with wind in your sails. And I love restoring old things.
My dad is stoked and all excited, that's kind of cool. Even though as a former air traffic controller and GA pilot, its just not enough "plane" for him. He keeps trying to push me in to the LSA experimental category. Not enough money for that! Its bare minimum airplane for me.... my best chance of getting into the skies.
I might be going to Sun N Fun in Lakeland, FL next April 17 for the first time, just to check it out. She went on a 1000 mile trip back through Pennsylvania and NC mountains where we visited family. Within 1 hour of getting her home back to Georgia, I assembled her on my front yard in the dark right, right where I always imagined a plane would be :-) Even though it was drizzling, and I had only gotten 5 hours of sleep in 36 hours!

She looks like something that's flown out of the Bermuda Triangle, 20 years after she got lost in it. Brutal and battered but for the most part intact.
There's just something about airplanes and flying that gets people excited. There wasn't a single gas station I stopped at that someone didn't come up to me and ask questions and start talking about my airplane.

On long flights it keeps my knees upright. There is nothing to lay the knees against in the pod and it gets tiresome holding them in that position after 1/2 hour or more...

I play a fretless Peavey Cirrus 5 string, I have several and have had just about everything else, I have fretted instruments but I never play them, and I played 4 string up until about 1990 but no longer own any.
I play through a pair of 12" Celestion neo speakers and a TC Electronic Tone print head. I played Crown amps with a tube pre for years but no longer need anything like that.
I love flying but this is like watching the first video of Mark Goodman from MTV we got to move past this guy's this is too old take note RUclipsrs

About "Lil Prop":
"LilProp-BigTrip" is the music video ending to Brian FitzGerald's documentary about Ultralight Flying titled "UFM2" (Ultralight Flying Millennium 2). "Lil Prop" is designed to take you along with The Sky Surfer on a low level, mythical Kansas Flight Adventure.
Most of the music video was shot in 2009 with the final section being completed in 2014.
Much effort was made to place cameras at various positions on the airplane in order to give you a sense of "being there".
Special credit goes to Cameraman Jeff Johnson who shot most of the "ground to air" sequences.
In addition to flying the plane and editing the piece, FitzGerald wrote and performed the music under this video.
The uploading of "Lil Prop" will start a "slow release" of the entire "UFM2" movie to RUclips.
