    Our local parrot flock (about 15 pairs this year) has new babies, and they are so stinking cute. I live on the third floor so they babies hang out and learn to fly at eye level for me. Every morning and afternoon the flock comes to my neighbors mango tree. The noise they make is ENORMOUS (they sound like 100 birds), and the messes they make are too. But they are ahhhhdorable.

      @@BirdTricks Don't get me started on the parakeet family that lives in the neighboring building stairwell. They have many loud squabbles every morning and afternoon. I can't tell whether it's territorial bickering or trying to wake the kids up for school. The place where i live in Ecuador is isolated between two unintentional wildlife sanctuaries:. A military training ground and an abandoned oil refinery housing project from the 60s. We have one of the last remaining black squirrels on earth living there. Next to the military grounds is a small creek with trees-- the parrot nursery where the babies spend the day with their attendants while the grownup parrots go out and do whatever grown up parrots do.

    I have a male and a female (not paired) Eclectus. I love them both so much, and they return the love. It breaks my heart to see Rusty all plucked. I do so hope he can grow back. We adopted a 20 year old Grey who has a bare neck from plucking, and I am afraid he will not grow back. He used to be quite a nice pet, but when his first owner gave him away, I think he still pines for him. We are working with him, but I fear he is a lost cause. But he will be ours to the end, grouch that he has become, he is an incredible talker, and we still love him.

    my family has a male eclectus that looks a lot like Rusty, but more naked sadly. poor Jaco picked up the bad habit of plucking during a stressful time in his life, but he's out of that situation now, and he's so full of love and life and makes the sweetest little whistles and happy squeaks whenever he sees me~ he's bad with spray bottles too tho, so I'm definitely using your tips in this video to get him used to them. thank you for taking such good care of all of these birds and sharing your knowledge and stories with the world~

      I weaned my eccie off nuts by using food that she could "shell" like a nut: peas & corn were a good combo, along with sprouted lentils/chickpeas/mungbeans. Basically anything that allowed her to dig in and leave a husk behind. She wouldn't touch anything else, and would tip her bowl upside down if there was any kind of chop lol.

    I have some odd questions. First, how much of a difference would it be to do what you do vs a falconer? Finally, have you ever thought of trying falconery (sp?) to at least see what it was like? I just took my son to a nearby wild bird sanctuary/rehabilitation center to learn about the birds and what they do there. These thoughts just came to mind while I was there.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  Год назад

      I've gotten to learn from some falconers in the sense of keeping our parrots safer while flying outside but I much prefer feeding a diet of veggies than... ya know... I joked that if I ever did falconry it would be with a kestrel and we'd get those grasshoppers good! In all seriousness, Dave has expressed interest in that sort of thing but based on what I've learned of it, it's not really up my alley.

      Well, might've commented too soon. How long was he kept in such an isolation ?

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  Год назад

      He slept initially in my quarantine room which is a separate air space from my personal flock but he wasn't kept in there 24/7 as you can see (also, it has a large door to outside that opens up, and the aviaries are able to wheel out onto an outdoor deck but move in at night for protection). All new birds go through a 30 day quarantine time period as recommended by my avian vet. Sometimes the stress of a new environment can make birds shed an illness they previously showed no signs of and I just would never want to endanger my own flock under the assumption every new bird I take is perfectly healthy (usually not the case).

    Don't you think it's ironic to cage a bird that represents freedom? Don't you actually own the bird to satisfy your ego? If you love animals as much as you do, why torture them by forcing them to be caged?

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  Год назад +1

      If I had this mindset, I wouldn't be doing anything to help them live more quality lives in the situations and environments they're already in. I'd just be sitting around hating everyone who put them there. I'd rather be part of the solution and I've met many, many people who have parrots as pets and they're selfless and loving people who want to do the best by their animals, as most people who have pets for companions are.

      @@BirdTricks Yes, your cages are very large and roomy, so that's at least something that fits. For me it is hard to see how animals are locked up especially birds. You really take care of the animals but I am sure if the little budgie could decide where he would rather live, he would choose freedom in Australia.
