  • Hii you lovely people!
Thank you sooooo much for still sticking around! The support means so much more to me than words can explain. This request is from Steven :)
I've never seen this before, or knew what it was about. Despite Rain Man being such an iconic movie. As you can probably see in this reaction, founding out one of the characters was Autistic, meant a lot to me. Since I also have this disorder (along with a few others). Though me and Raymond are very different neurodivergents, It was so cool to finally see this disorder on the big screen as well, especially in the 80s! I know I keep babling on both in the intro and outro, hehe if it gets too much, here's some timestaps.

I think Charlie actually did leave Las Vegas with the money he needed. The casino’s security manager said, "These tapes suggest that you should take your winnings and leave the state." And we saw that he had substantial winnings.

Yes, the ppl playing blackjack can work together. In fact, it’s assumed when you sit down at a table with strangers to work against the dealer. If you concentrate on only winning your own personal hand against the dealer, you might win while making the others lose. So, everyone works together to win together.

This film did serve to widen the awareness of autism. Aside from being special on it's own merits; well written, well acted, well crafted, it did perform as an advocate for the neuro divergent.
I'm happy for you to have had this film find you.
There is another wonderful film which worked to bring change to a misunderstood community and which i am also very fond of:
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) Jack Nicholson; Louise Fletcher; Will Sampson.

Anna I loved 🥰 your reaction and even more when you told that you were autistic person. Now through the years you can see many things that doesn’t before. Years ago (40-50) the autistic people were considered like maniacs or crazy in my country and to have one in your family was like a abomination. I had friends that were banned from their family because they were “differents”, brothers fight. I remember my aunt, she worked at some Hospital at the time and cut off her relation with one of her songs because was different.
I have an autistic son and I remember at the beginning was too difficult for me understand why he didn’t speak or why he didn’t grab any object or write ✍️ well.
Now is better I can understand many many things like the food that he likes or drinks or the syrup on the pancakes or waffles, the shorts or sneakers 👟.They are so vulnerable to the society, is really hard for them to make friends or worse girlfriends. They can’t live alone, they need someone who cares them for the whole life. Someone who love ❤️ them

They way I look at this movie's representation of autism is that it represented what the doctors knew at the time. That in turn brought more awareness to the condition which led to more research and a better understanding. So while now looking at the movie with what we know about autism it seems horribly stereotypical, back then with what they knew then it did not seem so.

I think one of the great things about Rain Man is that Raymond comes across favourably and is on camera so much. It's a rare thing that it's done even to this extent even if it is a depiction of an extremely rare subgroup of neurodivergence. The film serves to have Charlie go through a kinda Scrooge arc, with Raymond facilitating that. I do also wish it was a bit more subtle or even had a scene to explain that it's a spectrum... but for me I am able to make a distinction between a documentary and a piece of fiction and as such, I didnt take this as a true representation, rather a dramatisation.

  • @adnap
    @adnap 10 месяцев назад

The severity of Raymond’s condition is due to neglect through a lack of proper management tools. Basically due to the ignorance about ASD and neurodivergence in general, at the time this film was made.
This is what severe autism looks like if you don’t have the means to adapt to regularity and socialization. That’s why most of us had much stronger symptoms as children. You learn to normalize some behaviors as you grow to be an adult.
And in some part, you learn the hard way through social faux pas and mistakes.
I enjoyed hearing the commentary on this film from the thought perspective of someone who truly gets it, and understands first hand what it is to live with these disorders.
If you haven’t seen the movie *I Am Sam,* I STRONGLY recommend that you consider reacting to it. It’s such a beautiful film, and you don’t see or hear about it much anymore. You’d be the first to react to it, so that’s something.
I think it’s just as good if not better in some ways than Rain Man, though I do love them both.

I actually am, myself, a clinically-diagnosed, socially-challenged Asperger ("A classic case", as the psycho-therapist so aptly phrased it to me), and while I continue to struggle very much in this condition, somehow I manage to work through with it. But I still try, though, to find the humorous side, such as noting the commercially available tee-shirt which has the printed statement: "Aspies of the World Unite...(just don't make eye contact)". Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot were also autistic.

It's very cool to see someone relate to this movie on a deep level. Austism is really complicated and confusing. When you're talking about the underwear thing, that's been a thing for my son his whole life. Autistics have a lot of sensitivities and my son basically has a uniform that he wears every day in order to be comfortable. They say Einstein had a a closet full of identical suits. My son basically has a closet full of white cotton t-shirts and either black shorts or black sweatpants, depending on the weather. It can be really tricky to figure out which features somebody has and learn how to navigate them. I loved watching you watch this movie.

To be honest, nowadays, I don't feel like autism comes with much stigma, but for contrary other mental conditions are still in "fifties of last century". Few years back I was riding a bus, there was a guy talking to 3 girls, it caught my attention because it was some kind of argument, when I came nearer I found out he was calling them witches and was literally afraid of them, after listening to him carefully for about few minutes I was certain that the guy has schizofrenia, but girls were laughing and calling him names, few people were shouting at this guy for him to shut up, most people just turned their heads away. This guy needed medical attention, because he could hurt himself or somebody, yet, literally no one at this bus was concerned, I was the only one who decided to call emergency, even driver ignored me when I told him to stop the bus and wait for assistance. I'll never get that, people with cancer or other diseases get even more empathy from world than they deserve, but a guy fighting with his own thoughts is left alone or even causes laughs in others.
