Yes, unfortunately this is exactly how people were often promoted // Not based on the work they accomplished, but how " Diverse" they were ... If you were Gay, you could suck your way up the ladder pretty far.
I can't believe this never became a recurring bit. "It's time to put this diversity truck in reversity." "She has his eggs all over her face." "Let's view and see what we can watch." Their stilted way of talking is already funny, to add so many hilarious lines makes it one of the best things this show has ever done, in my view.

"Isn't it hard being a woman in the workplace in the 1990s?" "Sure can." I love subtle stuff like this. The writing is supposed to be bad, but you can't always beat the audience over the head with it. A subtle little thing where the answer to the question can be understood, but at the same time doesn't actually match the question that was asked, gives it that little something extra. And I've literally seen non-ironic commercials that get this wrong. There was one along the lines of, "Don't you wish you could [thing]? Now there is!"
I don't think they were "turning their ears" to hear better. I think they were highlighting their gaudy earrings for the viewers to see. You'll notice that when they throw to the simulation the second time, they put up their fingers to highlight their gaudy rings. And when they do it for the third and final time, they turn their heads all the way around, to highlight their... what are those things... jewel-covered hairpins? Anyway, it makes more sense in context.
Good thing I caught this video before I start work in an office next week. Now I know what to do if I encounter a diverse person in the workplace. Thanks SNL!

'90-91 vibes to me. But you're right, no later than that. What I find more interesting is Cecily's almost spooky rendition of the Mid-Atlantic accent. She really sounds like a "trained actor" of that era.
