  • We were very excited to go on our first Zambia Tour! Our “Bats and Beasts #1” of 2022 was one to look forward to and it delivered: IT WAS FANTASTIC!
    THE BEASTS
The Liuwa Plains Wildebeest migration in Zambia is one of Africa’s great natural phenomena. It is second in enormity only to the Masai Mara-Serengeti trek, and yet it’s hardly known. Each year, 45,000 wildebeest seek fresh grazing in the remote, sublime Liuwa Plains. Viewing these vast herds on the move is an unforgettable sight.
This migration is often referred to as one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. For good reason too - it takes place amongst fascinating predator activity and has none of the crowds of the Serengeti. Liuwa Plain is the place to go.
    THE BATS
“…an incredible three thousand metric tonnes of bat, some with a wingspan up to a metre in length!”
Animal migrations are one of the largest draws for tourists throughout Africa. The great wildebeest migration between Tanzania and Kenya is the most well-known, and sees almost two million wildebeest and zebra looping through an area of more than 10,000 sq. km. While Kasanka's bat migration may be lesser known, it tops all of Africa’s more famous migrations in the sheer number of mammals participating. The annual Kasanka bat migration - the planet’s largest mammal migration -arrives during November when there are 10 million straw-coloured fruit bats filling the skies at eye level. It is one of the natural world’s best-kept secrets, and for years this startling sight remained virtually unseen by African travel enthusiasts. It is an animal carnival to astound the senses.
    AND ALSO
The Kafue National Park covers a massive area in western Zambia. It’s known for its abundant wildlife and the Kafue River, running north to south through the park. In the north, the fertile Busanga Plains are home to lions, zebras, abundant birdlife and the Busanga Swamps. In the more remote south, elephants and antelopes roam the Nanzhila Plains, and hippos swim in the waters of Lake Itezhi-Tezhi.
The tropical rivers are popular with hippos and crocodiles, and elephants are regularly seen on the sandy banks taking a drink, and it is fantastic to see them on the increase after they suffered so hard from poaching.
Kafue National Park is well-renowned as one of the best places to spot leopard. Other predators include lions hanging out in trees, slender cheetah and elusive wild dogs. There are more species of antelope here than any other park, although it will take a bit of travel to see them all.
