  • Take a Drive in one of the coolest station wagons of modern day. This is the Acura TSX Sport Wagon. Unfortunately Honda never fitted the 6 Speed Manual or the 3.5L V6 to the Wagon, but its K24 and 5 speed Auto do the work to enjoy this incredible chassis.

    Proud owner of a manual sedan. I bought the car 6 months ago while in the market for a GTI. After driving both, there was just something about the "hondaness" that won me over. This is also my first manual car and the 6-speed/k24 combination has been a dream to learn with. The reverse wine sounds exactly like my Dad's old '96 civic :) Great car in any form!

    I currently have a 2011 TSX sedan, and I was extremely surprised with how much value you get with this car. The build quality is actually surprisingly nice and the k24 in it makes it quicker than most N/A 4 bangers, in sport with paddles you can rev it out even more and it will not upshift for you, get even more pull from it that way. And the handling dynamics, feels way sportier than I was expecting, I couldn’t be happier with it, it’s been a great reliable daily with a bunch of added bonuses that make it really enjoyable.

    You need to be in Sport mode to have full manual control. You can use the paddles in Drive, but you will be overridden within a few seconds if you don't shift.
    What I miss about these is that the computer actually lets you use first gear. On the newer 10 speed Acura models you have to hit the left paddle around 2000rpm while continuously on the throttle to "prevent" the upshift, and MAYBE it will let you hit about 4500 before it forces the shift to second gear (depending on traction).
    The TSX was the last Acura sedan that had SOMEWHAT of an analog sense of control, even with the automatic. You can rev match by blipping the throttle like you would on a true manual. They aren't fast cars, but they are fun and actually sound great.
    They actually did make the sedans available with both the J35 and a manual transmission, but it was either or, unfortunately. I believe sales would have interfered with the TL.

    Honda Automatics are basically manuals with automatic clutch packs on each gear. Theirs no planatary gear sets that's why you get the whine on reverse because it retaines the same reverse gear you'll find in a manual. The new Honda 10 speed is a planetary gearset they can handle alot more torque.

    But auto only (one engne-one transmission) was a turn-off. If it was marketed better (by Acura) and came w/a manual, like the sedan, it would have done much better. The Saab 9-3 Sportcombi was available w/a manual at the same time, and I gravitated in that direction. Of course the Saab's downside was that it was a Saab and a GM Saab at that.

    I own an 8th generation accord coupe, the tsx’s sibling, and the k24z3 in these cars bolt up with the k24z7 in the 9th gen si so what could be done is converting the wagon to a manual that comes with an lsd from the factory, add some power mods (RBC intake can be adapted to the engine, also the 9th gen si roots supercharger manifold if you’re crazy enough) and the wagon could be a proper canyon carver with the go to back it up.

Sold it with 365,000km or around 225k mi. No problems at all. Didn't burn oil. I was anal about upkeep though and did things well before their due dates. I cleaned my seats and scrubbed each inch of the seats once a year. I ended up getting a 3rd gen lexus IS and while it's great, I miss my manual every day. I also miss the fuel economy as I would regularly get 700km to a tank (premium) ~ 8.4l/100km. Don't even ask me about fuel economy now LMAO. If you are thinking about getting this car, it is a must have. Interior is nicely designed and appointed, comes with great features for its time, good on fuel, and reliable as heck - so much so I contemplated if the lexus could be as reliable as the Honda lmao. While not amazingly fast, it is more than fast enough for 90% of situations. The one thing that hindered this car (and all fwd cars) is being fwd. Absolute beast. I've never seen an Acura wagon, cool. My dad's car is a 2010 Accord with this awesome K24 engine, 2.4L 4Cyl but with 190 horsepower. It's not as fuel efficient as I'd like but it accelerates surprisingly strong when you wring it out as you said... V-TEC! The auto transmission is good majority of the time but sometimes it bogs down as it's trying to stay fuel efficient- you explained it well in the vid. It's surprisingly more sport tuned than luxury tuned as you also said- great handling, tight suspension but a little harsh on the bumps. My K24 has a shudder/rattle sound on cold start sometimes which Honda said is not an issue, but it's a common annoyance/occurance which many ppl reported but Honda doesn't ackowledge or offer a fix. Apparently it has to do w/ a "VTC Actuator" and the engine oil. Luckily there's been no problems with the engine or oil levels/quality over 200,000 kms driven.

    • @silentsniper441
      @silentsniper441 2 года назад

    The reason for the gear whine is that Honda's automatic transmission is mechanically very similar to a manual transmission. It has a gear set like a manual rather than a set of clutch packs. Part of why Honda automatics last so long.

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  Год назад +1

      its just a straight cut reverse gear. thats all it is.

    • @beandipss
      @beandipss Год назад

      @TedwardDrives yes that's the reason for the whine. But the reason it's got a straight cut reverse gear is because it's built just like Honda manual transmissions which also have a straight cut reverse gear. Rather than a traditional auto using planetary gearsets and clutch packs.

    This is my favorite car the TSX wagon. Looking for a car for a friend who wants a Saab 9-3 convertible coupe or a Honda Accord coupe. You talk about the six cylinder Honda engine. I asked a mechanic should I look for a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder, and he said- get the 2010-2012 automatic non-cvt 4 cylinder. He said that was better than the 6. Do you agree? The 4 cylinder has a timing chain rather than a timing belt. It's also lighter and more controllable. But what would be your opinion? Problem is Tough finding one in good shape and all the ones on sale look like the mileage has been rolled back by hoodlums in the Bronx. While there are lots of new six cylinders out there. Which is why I've been looking for a Saab.

    Bought a 6 speed manual sedan about 7ish months ago for my first car, bought it for 2k AUD, its been brilliant to drive and so far is yet to let me down. First Honda I've ever driven, and its excellent. 250k kilometers (155k miles) and have had absolutely zero issues with it.

    Proud owner (and rallycrosser) of the TSX wagon, made a review on it myself and you hit a lot of the same notes. Great fuel economy/throttle response, joyful handling, and remarkable practicality.
    Fun fact: you can fit a full size spare under the trunk.

    its always interesting seeing people review the TSX sport wagon because everytime people drive it they go "oh i want AWD!" "oh it needs a V6!" but what were totally ignoring here is honda already did that....the Honda Crosstour despite the name and marketing is a wagon, if the ride height genuinely displeases people simply lower it, it uses the 8th gen Accord Chassis so its a proper double wishbone front, but it uses the Viscous RealTime system, while not as advanced or capable as VTM4 or SH-AWD, AWD is AWD, and if yall still arent happy with that, mazda was brave enough to make the 1st gen Mazda 6 wagon (also with a great double wishbone front true multilink rear setup) not only V6 standard but also had a standard Manual transmission to boot granted its 3.0L V6 makes only 220HP, not quite the 265-270 J35's make but come on guys do you want the Manual or the J35

    I seriously considered one a couple of years ago (as an Accord version in Europe). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to source the right spec (full options + light interior) and they are now rather old by my wife standards. So I ended up in an S60 while I really wanted a V60. That's life.
    Nice comprehensive review as always, Tedward!

    2012 wagon white/beige 162k mi. Bought it used in 2013 from dealer with 10k mi at -$10k under new price. As a “kid” my first car was a new 93 Accord DX standard transmission I bought in 93. Drove that sucker for 14 years. Only thing I ever wished was that I got the wagon version. Fast forward to adulthood, only thing I wish was that this tsx had a clutch. Paddle shifters don’t do it for me. Automatic is starting to slip now - wonder if I can convert it?

    I love the K24 though, I had an 07 Accord with one and it was a great Powertrain.
    Question for anyone that has one - would it be reasonable to think that I could fit a forward facing car seat, another forward facing booster seat, and a rear facing car seat all in that back row? Looking for a cool ride that can also safely transport my family.

    Was on my way to look at a Dodge Magnum when I got a call from my friend at a dealership that got one of these in stock. Bought it up instantly, I've always been a fan of Honda and always wanted a wagon for practicality. 140k miles, black with black leather seats, a massive amount of tint and a muffler delete. The exhaust is held up with a coat hanger but I'm gonna make this my forever car ❤
